Fisher & Paykel is owned by Haier, people pay a premium not realizing it's a Chinese brand now

    • +1

There's more to a product than the parent company.

Geely owns most of Volvo as well as making their own branded cars.

      • +3

Except they still make most Volvo cars in Sweden, Geely didn't hollow them out from the inside and turn them into a zombie badge on their own cars.

Fisher & Paykel used to be manufactured in Australia and New Zealand, listed on the ASX and everything, and they commanded a premium for that.

Now they're made in China and Thailand at Haier factories, so they don't deserve that premium anymore.

At least Bosch is very clear about which lines are made in Germany and which are made elsewhere

      • In this case not really

If u take apart a FP washer dryer,it will have 90 percent of the components from the haier line, even the ID numbers on the parts will match.

FP is still a good brand,it's just SOOOO many ppl still buy it thinking it's a NZ made owned product..when it's made same dude who made the haier

  • The negative reviews about this one complain about it taking way too long to dry sheets etc or that clothes just come out damp. Is this just a thing with all heat pump dryers? People still prefer heat pump dryers?

    • +2

I think people buy heat pump dryers expecting vented speed

    • +1

We have one of these. Clothes generally only need 1 cycle. Sheets, we use "sheets" mode, and put it on extra dry. Typically 2 cycles, but the second is much shorter.

The best thing is the power usage. One load of clothes uses 1kWh of energy, roughly 30 cents in WA.

      • Yeah, I got one of these like a month ago lol

        Happy with it so far!

      • How long does a cycle take?

        • Roughly 2 hours, depending on load and settings.

    • +4

honestly i feel for any heat pump dryer you'll get a couple of reviews where people complain about how long it takes or things still being damp. Then there are others who are really happy with it. Reading reviews for tumble dryers did my head in.

    • Trust me, negative reviews come from people who do not read manual and don't know how to use it. You can see same reviews about Bosch. I've got Bosch heat pump dryer and everything comes out toasty dry. No more line drying. This is a revolutionary piece of equipment.

Some people stuff as much as can physically fit into the drum, if the sheets can't move around there will be wet patches. The dryer will stop when it detects no moisture.

Don't overload it and you will be fine.

  • +1

I've had one of these for about two years now. No issues and dries everything just fine.

  • This model or a similarly priced Bosch Series 6 9kg Heat Pump Tumble Dryer (White, WQG24200AU)?

    • Bosch has the better reputation of reliability, all their Heat Pumps are made in Poland.
Would usually recommend spending a bit more for the WQG24201AU ( eg. The Good Guys $1,189) as you get the Eco Silence Drive motor and LED lighting inside the drum.

Fisher Paykel is Haier which is why this is made in China.

Neither have reverse tumble, but the Bosch does have anti-tangle properties for the every day items with the curved fins in the drum and the cone at the rear.
The secondary filter at the bottom left protecting the condenser is also much easier to remove/clean in the Bosch.

      • Would you recommend a reverse tumbler dryer over a non reverse tumble in your experience?

        • +2

Having owned multiple heat pumps without reverse tumble I would say it’s not the end of the world but I guess I also understand how to use a heat pump correctly.

The common reasons people look for reverse tumble is because of items such as bed sheets rolling into a ball.
This naturally happens if you are doing just a single bed sheet by itself rolling in one direction.
That is why brands like Bosch only activate the reverse tumble feature on the Bed Sheets setting.

I am usually washing multiple bedding items a like sheets, covers, pillow cases etc. on a hot wash and then have a normal size load to be dried so don’t run into these issues.

The other thing to note with any Heat Pump Dryer, is understanding they will struggle to dry a small load eg. 2/3 items as the dryer often gets confused with the garments not touching the sensors and the dryer then thinking it is dry and will turn of prematurely.
That is why it is important to have the Timed Dry programs as this tells the dryer to just run for the set time without the use of the sensor, this function has saved me on a few occasions when I have needed to dry just a shirt or a pair of pants that haven’t dried over night when hung up.

          • @Retailing: Thanks so much for the useful information! Your last comment matched with reviews saying that users couldn't extend the dryer as it sensed that the clothes were dry. I'll look for a times dry program machine!

            Have a great one

            • @Robot16: No worries!

Glad I could help, the other function/setting I would suggest to look for is Half Load so that the dryer doesn’t just treat every load as if it is full to help with the usual complaint of heat pumps with timeframe.

              • @Retailing: Legend. I appreciate that tip too. You have really helped with my search!

      • thanks for sharing, how would you compare the Bosch series 8 to the westinghouse?

        https://www.appliancegiant.com.au/products/westinghouse-wdh8…

        • No worries,
          Different leagues of reliability.
Westinghouse and the entire group of their Heat Pumps ( Westinghouse, Electrolux, AEG ) have cut corners and they don’t even bother to change it when charging the higher price points.
Even simple things aren’t there such as having a secondary filter at the bottom left to help protect compressor fins/coils, it’s practically asking for a future issue or just planned obsolescence.
The Westinghouse you have linked would be a closer to the Bosch WTH83001AU which is soon to be replaced with the WTH83002AU ( Slightly new look, 1 Extra Star Efficiency and some added dry cycles ).

Bosch Series 8 is better but there are a few models to choose from depending on the features you want and of course the price point you want to spend.
As suggested in my previous comment, the WQG24201AU is the recommended step up to get the Eco Silence Drive motor and LED lighting inside the drum, you can then choose to pay more in the models starting with WQG235 to get the popular features of Auto-Cleaning Condenser and Reverse Tumble on the Bed Sheets setting.

Btw the highly rated 9kg Samsung one can be had for around 900 delivered.

    https://www.samsung.com/au/washers-and-dryers/dryers/dv6000t…
Live chat code 100$, 200$ for any old dryer (I paid 30 for an old one from marketplace), YMMV.

    • +2

Hey mate, What's live chat code for $100?

      • You can basically ask Samsung live chat agents for a loyalty code, tell them you want to buy this model. One caveat is they'll ask for any Samsung device IMEI. I used my Samsung watches and they gave me a code for 100$.

        • I chatted with Samsung today and instead of a $100 code they gave me a 10% off code. Is this the same mate?

    • How did you get it for $900 delivered even with a live chat code? I am seeing $1749

      • Looks like the price went up this morning. It was 1199 for a couple of days till yesterday.

        • +2

Can confirm it was 1199 when i looked last night. Thanks for the tip on loyalty code. Will try that on my next Samsung purchase.

  • How’s this item compared with the popular esatto?
