Tempted! Was hoping for direct from Melbourne but China Airlines has been expensive lately.

    • can confirm.. bought the other day!

But Cathay is a really nice airline. Flew them last year, and was very impressed

    • I picked Cathy as well to go to chongqing with stop over in HK. China airlines are quite expensive lately .

  • So the last leg is a domestic flight? 😋

    • No, Taiwan and HK are separate countries from a flying perspective

      • +1

Both are part of China , no difference

        trigger alert

          LOL, you mean Western ROC?

Good luck trying to enter thru Taiwanese customs with your red passport (or hey if it's domestic, no passport?).

          Go on. Try it.

I personally wouldn't transit via HK. Yeah yeah haters flame away, I prefer my privacy and freedom.

I was there earlier in the year . No issues . Quit being brained washed by the west.

yeah, HK vs LA, I know which airport I'd prefer to go through, and I come from a friendly country.

I took this deal direct last year.

Cathay often offers the absolute best value for Australia to Taiwan flights, this is one such time. New fit-outs, good legroom, excellent service and a lot of newer aircraft - even the old 777s have the new fit-outs.

Cathay has daytime flights with quick and easy transits at HK totalling about 12 hours. China Airlines is faster and excellent but expensive and all their flights are overnight arriving in the early hours of the morning, which ends up costing an extra hotel night if you need a nap on arrival.

    Tips:
    * Don't only think of flying into TPE, consider KHH as it's a great gateway to the South, the mountains and even the East Coast.
    * a KHH TPE open jaw is also an option.
    * Pay $100 more to book direct to ensure delays and cancelations are easily handled for you (personal experience) - good luck if you use an online travel agent.
    * Sign up for Cathay membership so you can check in 48 hrs prior to flight and then select seats for free. If you use your QF or other OneWorld partner frequent flyer number you can only do it 24 hrs before and you will get the leftovers.
    * Don't go until after October to avoid typhoons.

    • Really ? My brother uses CX only as they are the only airline offers direct flights between HK & Brisbane, very expensive and economy cramped like sardines, not sure if they use different air craft for this route.

      • Sounds like your bro might need some context.

They use A350s for BNE as well.

Economy 32" pitch and 18" width is considered above average now.
        https://seatmaps.com/airlines/cx-cathay-pacific/airbus-a350-…

As CX offer the only direct flights BNE-HKG they are obviously going to be expensive. Your bro could book a HKG trip on the current deal if he added on a TPE side trip. His other option is SQ, which is a side trip anyway.

        • I wouldn't call a 32 inch pitch comfortable. I recently came back from Korea using Korea Air, their seat pitch was 33 - 34 inch and that gave us lots of egg room and it was really comfortable for an economy seat.

          • @sistermay: It would be nice if 33-34" seats were common place but in reality there are only a few airlines with economy cabins that offer such space.

  • +1

This is actually very good price just going to HK itself. I wonder if it works if you even abandoned the part to Taipei. Stay and return just from HK altogether?

Cathay is good in economy cabin, quite happy overall in our last flight. better than qantas

    • Once they see you've skipped a segment they cancel the remaining segments, so don't do it. Better to build in a quick side trip to TPE or KHH on the way there or the way back.
