UPDATE 17/06: cheaper through Allphones eBay @$764: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/911049

Recently released Insta360 x5, seems to be lowest price yet. RRP is $930, the next cheapest I can find is Mobileciti eBay for $899.

Specs here: https://www.insta360.com/product/insta360-x5.

Insta360 is known to pay reviewers for glazing their products but here's an unbiased review which I found insightful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g7eG4Ax5RE&t=40s&ab_channel….

The main selling point for me is the replaceable lenses ($60 for the kit) and upgraded durability - I've cracked the lenses on my x3 and x4 just from simple drops. it also has 5.7k at 60fps, better low light performance and slightly better battery vs x4.

Don't forget TopCashback has 3% cashback (=$30) which is eligible with the eBay promo code: https://www.topcashback.com.au/ebay.

  • I have the X4. And all I can say is that if you are going on a family holiday, do get this!

I was going to buy X5 but hesitant due to
      - fear of cracking lens (even if it can be easily replaced now on X5
      - the time and effort it takes to produce output. I seen youtuber/posts claiming it can take between 20mins to 1 hour or more depending on the length/quality of video. and during that time you cannot use your phone or export starts again. I have a DSLR and the friction of taking the card out, copy photos to computer then transfer/sync to phone slowed down the workflow quite a bit. hence I reasoned 360 cameras was more suited toward content creators
      - wide angel shots. maybe I can supplement normal angel with my phone since whole of video in wide angel does not seem right to me

in your experience, do any of these bother you?

the ability of reframe your shots is incredible, and I really want it though

When you try it out, filming is so easy. You can basically replay the day, looking at other angles that you didn't see or missed because you were looking elsewhere. It is like in Minority Report where they replay what happened from different angles. Really worth it.

If you want to export video, do it on your pc or laptop. The phone is too slow. I don't really export a particular angle, the value is the 360° for me. I can re-live the memory easily. Seriously, if you have elderly parents, set the X5 up on the table when you are having a great discussion with them. When they leave this world, that 360 video will be a precious memory.

@bheart It definitely does take a lot more time, as firstly you ned to reframe the whole video (unless you're just pulling random clips for social) which means going through the whole video and slowly adjusting your direction and adding keyframes. I much prefer to edit in Premiere Pro, so I then export from Insta my flat video and then have to do a second round of editing/cutting etc. When I shoot with my Go Pro, I don't have to worry about step 1.

However, the positives are that I'm usually filming with it at the same time as I'm shooting with the SLR and so I'm actually capturing everything with almost 0 effort or awareness at all. Most of that footage is usable too, something that would be impossible to do with any other type of camera.

        I use and love my X4 and these are my thoughts;

        • Regarding fear of cracking the lens, the X5 is now best placed for handling this. But as with earlier generations you can use lens covers. This reduces the quality of the image somewhat but is not very noticeable and gives you peace of mind. I've had some crashes while holding my X4 and its been fine.

        • Editing/exporting from the phone is a shitshow IMO. Reframing and editing on mobile can be hit or miss, if you like editing on a phone its fine. But yes during export you are locked out of your phone for long periods of time while it renders. I personally highly recommend editing and reframing on a PC. I only edit and export on the phone when I want to extract a quick short clip here or there to quickly share with a friend or family.

        • You can always punch in to get the shot you want, doesn't have to stay wide angle.

The way I think about it is I'm shifting time and effort during "production" to instead take place in "post-production". This means I can just hold the camera almost wherever and however I want, not think about it, live and enjoy the moment I am experiencing during the "production". This is what I find very valuable.

Then I have to spend all that time and effort I saved earlier during post-production when I go to reframe and edit the footage.

If you are unsure though, I would highly recommend picking up a secondhand one. Plenty of X4s and X3s will be on the market from people upgrading to X5s.

I think compared to an action camera, you shoot first reframe later which can be more time consuming than getting the right angles right first hand and just trimming for action bits.

Quality output after reframing is maybe about 1080p.

The phone app doesnt seem to output the same high bitrate/res as a pc.

I had the X4. Was fantastic. So I had to get the X5 on release day and it's been nothing but… marvelous! lol

Paid around $920 for it so this deal is like, you can't miss it.

I use it for social media content and recently all my videos have been really outstanding thanks to the X5.

Really worth the money, for content creating, Facebook personal posts, family photos, trip videos etc.

It's the best tech released this year in my opinion.

If anyone buys this can you please upload a receipt/order confirmation for me to use for price protection. I paid $862 for one through JB HiFi commercial just last week!!!

Wow original pricing is $70+ over RRP and its still getting up voted….. talk about JACK living here and is being celebrated for being Jack.

    • +1

It's the discounted price we care about Bob. We all know they inflate the price on eBay.

  • People should watch this video about how forum posts and video comments are made by paid Insta360 employees to promote their products. Its by a very reputable Australian camera reviewer.

    • Pretty sure all companies do that to promote their products. It's up to the buyer. I had an X3 and loved it, unfortunately, i forgot it on the plane.

    • Is that why I got downvoted by some people haha

I've been a member of ozbargain since 2011

  • Still waiting to see what DJI are going to do

    • Think they have a prototype floating around already. 1 inch sensor, app has to be good though.

  • +4

Upgraded from x4, man that massive difference 💪🏼.

Bought this $740 at jb commercial. Happy to screenshot invoicr.

    • What’s the stills like? I still haven’t found a camera that can match stitching together shots for clarity, resolution and chromatic abboratons

      • It's not as good as proper stitching, of course. The sensor is still not a miracle. Don't use this as a still, video or action camera replacement. Use it as a 360 camera.

        • Yeah I just checked some samples and it’s still not very good, I’ll keep waiting

    • Does it heat up at 8K like the X4?

      • I’ve heard reports that it does - check reddit

    • Do you mean jb hifi business? I've got access to it but it is showing me the price of $817.90

      • JB Hi-Fi business through the Westpac app is $862 so $817 is nice.

    • Could you please screenshot the invoice.

$761.81 if you use ebay plus code and pay with discounted ebay gift cards (3% from maquarie)

  • I am looking to get the essentials bundle with additional battery, fast charger, selfie stick and case. That’s 300 difference, do I really need the extra charger and battery? I know I will get the selfie stick.

    • Personally, I would say you could survive without. And then buy another battery down the road when it's on special, should you find you need it. You can also source replica selfies sticks of Amazon and AliExpress.

Source: I have never purchased additional batteries for insta360 cameras.

    • The regular camera comes with a soft case. You will need to buy a selfie stick but there are generic ones on amazon for cheap (the light weight 114cm ones are best ~$40). I even managed to get a 3M carbon fibre one (it's a tad big) for $20.

You can power the camera off a USB-C powerbank so I wouldn't consider the spare batteries essential.
