I will never need one of these but damn that intro video is impressive.

    • +4

their promo videos are a masterclass!

Tbh it is really good compared to my previous x4. Used it last Vivid and the results are crazy. Did few short vids with kids. Again, not for everyone. But the difference between x4 and x5 especially the night shots is massive.

      • how is it like editing with this? I actually am a fan of using my phone to shoot family travel videos with the kids

With a 360 action camera, I feel like it's going to be cumbersome as I need to point to which perspective of the 360 view I want from each clip I record.

Compared to the phone, I've already recorded it in the specific angle I want, so I simply just need to trim the videos as I need. Sure I miss out on flexibility of what was behind me or around me, but I already had an viewing point in mind when I shoot with my phone camera.

        • +1

very easy on both mobile and desktop app (easier on desktop for obvious reasons). Just keyframe once in the direction you wanted at the beginning of the video, and it will lock in on that spot for the remainder of the video.

          • @Dealr: thanks, hows zooming like? With a phone camera, I can pinch to zoom and get that zoom effect on demand. I've noticed action cameras have fixed zoom settings, so in practice, the zoom cuts from 1x to 3x without that zooming effect….

            • @chillipaste: you can zoom to any level, no fixed settings, just pinch and zoom like you would on your phone.

              • @Dealr: just to clarify - is this pinch zoom while recording? can you pinch zoom from the touchscreen of the device? I haven't seen any youtube reviews go through the zooming function

                • +1

@chillipaste: afterwards, think of it as you simply pressing record and the 360 camera is capturing everything around you. Then you decide at a later date where you want the focus to be. Note: you can still 'point and pan' the camera in the direction of where the action is, and see it on the screen in real time, but its not actually changing anything.

I was once a travel video man editing at FINAL CUT PRO before getting married, now I don't have much time for that. I find the insta desktop app is very good for quick videos. Have not tried the phone app yet.

          • @Fredfloresjr: I've been editing all my family travel reels via instagram app, surprisingly really good and the music library is a huge win

            • +1

@chillipaste: Will give this a try mate, thanks. How funny it's all about them now. We want to treasure everything.

            • @chillipaste: is this the instagram edit app?

              • +1

@Fredfloresjr: native editing in the instagram app, no separate app. Choose to upload a 'Reel', add your videos, it will recommend a song or you can pick one, and it will automatically provide a quick edit of the videos.

I normally skip the automatic one, and manually edit my videos with the song choice I have selected. You can add text, transitions etc. Have fun!

It depends what you are recording. Some shots are just impossible to record yourself with using just a phone; i.e. action shots like snowboarding. It can be very hard to point a camera at someone while you yourself are making independent turns.

Other times the 360 cam lets you not fuss about the specific angle you are capturing and instead just hit record and focus your attention on enjoying the moment.

A recent favourite of mine has been sticking the camera on time lapse mode and having it poke out the top of my backpack while I go for a hike. You get a nice time lapse for very little effort.

Editing on PC is way easier but its not too hard to do a short and sweet edit on the phone if you want to quickly pull out a clip to share with people.

Regarding your zoom comment, all zooming is done digitally and in post-production, you can smoothly zoom in but its all digital zoom. Optical zoom doesn't make sense for a 360 camera

          • @Jamolo: thanks - yep the zooming is what I expected. The optical zoom effect on phone cameras is quite neat, because you get that blur and refocus mode happening. Very tempted on the x5…..

          • @Jamolo: Yeah PC is so easy especially with framing 360.

          • @Jamolo: This is a bit of an off question, but would it work to hold an x5 with your hand to record, like a phone to record?

I basically lower my phone down to my kids level to record as they walk around at their perspective.

            • @chillipaste: @chillipaste sure you can hold it in any position to record from. If you're holding it down low most of the image will be of the floor, but you can reframe it to point forward or at whatever you want for a low point of view video.

              • +1

@Jamolo: yeah that makes sense, my thinking is that the distortion won't be as bad when the camera is at eye-level with the kids.

only caveat with that is 360 video will a stretched out arm holding onto the phone, but in single lens mode or instaframe, that won't be much of an issue

      • The x4 can be had for $540 after 30% (capped $200) cashback from TopCashback

$250 difference to get the x5 - what's your take on the x4 for a first time action camera user?

        https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/1126565142…

        • That deal is over. TopCashback stopped the deal.

        • +1

I would highly recommend getting the x5 and steering clear of previous versions. Better features aside, the x5 has replaceable lenses, x4 does not. Take it from someone who is careful, yet has still dented 4 out of 4 insta360 cameras since they came on to the market. Once they are dropped/dented, they become essentially useless given the field of view.

          • @Dealr: X4 has replaceable lens guards though? So that should be enough protection?

  • On the deal page, it says 30% off with JUNEOFY, but capped at 100$ off

    Bought, thanks OP

  • Boys what's a good camera for motorcycle recording off a chin mount?

    • +1

      www.amazon.com.au/DJI-Standard-Waterproof-Stabilization-Touc…

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, it even shows it in the promo image. Best all-round action camera currently on the market imo.

      • -1

Till you have used an insta 360 you will never really understand why you should have one.

        • +1

I have had 4 bud. You wouldn't go for a 360 camera off a chin mount, your face would take up 180' of the view.

  • Anyone knows if the cashback works? This code JUNEOFY15 does not show up on their approved list.

    • I guess we'll find out, if it doesn't, better to get the previous post I suppose.

      • +1

well actually i bought based on this post(thanks OP) and an FYI, TCB did not track. But looking at the other deal, its pretty much the same price as this deal(with cashback), difference is in the other deal, i need to wait for 90 days or more for the cashback. So this seemed better.

Got one. I'd been looking at them for work for a while. It'll make CCTV camera install planning much easier. Whack the X5 up on a selfie stick to the required height "Is this the view you want Mr Customer?" Tried it in the past with normal cameras but pointing it in the right direction was a real faff.

    • Great idea!
      Can I pick your brain?
Do you require a licence to install this kind of thing (eg like an electrician has requirements), or just general handy-man knowledge of how to mount things, run cables without messing up the walls, etc? Cheers

      • +2

We've a team of guys that do it. They're all registered cablers, which is a requirement for installing network cabling. Here in WA we also need to operate under a security installer's licence. The latter is only required if you're charging for your work, the former is legally required no matter if you're charging for it or doing it to your own house (but that's a whole other discussion…)

        • Sound good!
-Do you need to install a permanent power supply to the x5?
-Is it design to be on 24/7?(as long as the x5 can last at least 2-3 yrs while permanently on)

          • +1

@m2000: No, this is purely for the planning stages of a deployment. I've ordered a 5 metre long selfie stick that will allow the camera to be positioned more or less anywhere you're likely to install one. I can then confirm exactly what needs to be within view of the camera from there and select one with the appropriate field of view.

  • I was going to upgrade my X3 to an X4…. Glad I didnt . This X5 looks amazing

  • Hi, I’ve pulled the trigger and bought one!
Just wondering if I need to buy any other accessories as well?
If so, which ones are the most useful to get? Thanks!

    • +2

Lens guards are must, as the lenses are acrylic and scratch very easily.
      https://store.insta360.com/product/x5-standard-lens-guards

You also need some sort of selfie stick, not necessary the brand one, camera really shines with one.
Get the extended 3m selfie stick if you want to do some fun things like mimic drone footage etc.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnBeblQbfwU

      • Any suggested lens cover from Amazon?
i had a quick look and there are so many prices from $10-50

        • Brand ones, as you need to manually turn Lens guard mode with any 3rd party, as additional glass layer changes the optics and camera needs to take this into account. With brand ones lens guard mode turns on/off automatically, saves you some stress later.

        • with the X5, the whole lens can be replaced (DIY). So lens guards would not be needed as much as the old previous models, as they tend to affect the optics.
          https://www.digidirect.com.au/insta360-x5-replacement-lens-k…

          • @m2000: Maybe instead of buying a new lens for $60 each time, using a lens guard could protect it and make it last much longer?

            • @FlyingPanda99: Hopefully. Yes it is less expensive, although I have not used the guards yet.

  • Just signed up for eBay plus and ordered one. Thanks OP! Pretty annoying I had to create a new eBay account though. My last one I had owned since 2007 but as it's registered in the US I couldn't sign up for eBay plus in Aus. Oh well. RIP eBay history. Worth it for some savings.

  • Reckon everyone is clearing stock before DJI 360 cam is announced?

    • Dji360 leaked already. Doesn't look that nice
Compact though. I'm hoping this causes price drops on the x5
