Hello I'm moving to Australia (from NZ) in the next few weeks and trying to get as much sorted before I arrive.
I'm currently with KoganNZ on a 365 day plan and I love the simplicity of just paying once a year and not needing to think about bills.
What are the best options that have a good balance of price vs coverage vs speed. I'll be based in central Sydney but hoping to see more of Australia on weekends/work trips etc.
It depends on what you want to do with the plan. Few things to consider:
(1) What is your data utilisation pattern needs. If you are going to be primarly using Wifi, or on the move requiring mobile data
(2) What about international calling. As I understand, most NZ mobile plans come with free calls to Australia. Unfortunately that is not the case here. So if calling NZ (or elsewhere) is a priority, that will narrow the focus for you.
(3) Where are you planning to live? If you are going to be in a city, it (usually) does not matter. However if you are in regional areas, you might want to ask around before you purchase a plan.
There are three big network providers - Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. Almost everyone uses their network. Telstra (in my opinion) has the best coverage, which also reflects in their price. Other two are close, with Optus slightly better than Vodafone.
If I were you, I would purchase a cheap short term plan SIM (14 day or 30 day). During that time, canvassing the locals about their experience will allow you to choose network that works best for you. And then once that is nailed down, other choices are pretty easy!

Wait until you move then get a trial sim from Kogan here to make sure it works in the areas you’ll frequent.
I’ve had no issue with Kogan myself, but others in different areas have massive issues.
