Sorry, newbie here. Could anyone help to explain why this is "not as good" as 50mm f/1.8 S, which has a smaller aparture and weighs 650g supposedly?
The 1.8 is an S lens so supposedly optically superior. I haven't tried the 1.4 but have tried the 1.8S and I was blown away by the sharpness of it.
Great, thanks for the explanation!
The Nikon 'S' lenses are the premium glass with very high image quality, so although the 1.4 beats the 1.8 on some factors, the overall image quality might not be as good.
Edit: I have the 1.8 S and I love it.Sounds good, will keep an eye out for 1.8 S sale!
Where did you get that is 650g? What I've seen is 415g.
According to multiple reviews, f/1.8 S has better sharpness and dispersion control.
f/1.8 S also has AF/MF switch while this f/1.4 doesn't have oneThe amazon item description lists 650g supposedly 🤷♂️

Also, does this f/1.4 not having AF/MF switch means it only does manual focus?
Still AF, but theres no override switch for AF/MF only;

I mean f/1.8 S has a physical AF/MF switch on the end of the lens. Of course f/1.4 this level of lens would support AF but just without a physical switch, you'll need to switch it on the camera. It's not a big deal. f/1.4 has the multifunctional ring that can be assigned to adjust Focus/Aperture/ISO/Exposure Compensation
