i heard that the way it works is based on other samsung phone close to the tag to ping the location back to you. and those samsung phone has to opt in the samsung find. so how practical is it in real life. i was planing to put one in the car. in case i need to track it when stolen. is this a stupid idea?
Not a stupid idea. If you wanted to be extra paranoid, put an airtag in there too. In two different spots, a thief would have a field day trying to find them before you find them.
I threw one of these in my car, and it tracks it well enough to give me a general idea of where the car is if i want to know.
I heard that the new model won't be compatible.
Tks OP, I currently use an AirTag in my 2nd family car without tracking services (AirTags were previously bought for my Japan trip as Japanese Samsung popularity is very low, and it did work great coz one piece of my luggage was left behind in my transiting airport in another country).
However since I use Galaxy S24+ the downside are :
Airtag can only be tracked via my wife's iPhone, on top of it I also frequently receive reminders on my Android phone suggesting a tracker is travelling with me when I drive that car. (I tried googling for a solution but it seems there is none.)
This will be perfect to get me out of both situations above.
I thought there was cross platform tracking (between Android and iOS) now?
Not that I am aware of, happy to be told otherwise, but for 25ish and it connects directly to my phone this cannot go wrong.
