[Price Error] ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Wi-Fi 7 Mesh System (2 Pack) $899 (Was $2349) + Delivery ($0 to Metro Areas/ C&C) @ Scorptec

400

First time poster, so please be gentle.

Was searching for something to up the coverage/speed on my home network and noticed that the BQ16 tends to get reasonable reviews from most places but have traditionally been very expensive. Example here of the BQ16 pro edition review - main difference is the 2 x 6Ghz bands on the BQ16 Pro vs 2 x 5Ghz on the BQ16:
https://dongknows.com/asus-zenwifi-bq16-pro-review/

While doing a bit of internet sleuthing today, I noticed that Scorptec seems to have these on clearance for $899 for a 2-pack - approx $1000 cheaper than most other competitors.

Hopefully this is useful to someone else looking for mesh networking kit with Wifi 7 at a decent price.

  • For anyone interested in how this mesh technology is different to the standard AiMesh that is built into all Asus routers.
For me, the standard Asus AiMesh has been great and I have had no issues with network or moving around the house and switching between routers.
I was using Orbi's before switching to Asus. The Orbi's were problematic for me, losing connections and requiring reboots regularly.

Feature Asus AiMesh Asus Smart AiMesh
    Introduction Year 2018 2025
    AI Optimization No Yes
Multi-Link Operation No Yes (with Wi-Fi 7 support)
    Dynamic Backhaul Basic Advanced
Hardware Compatibility Broad (many Asus routers) Limited to newer models with Wi-Fi 7
Performance Consistency Variable (depends on router combo) Enhanced (optimized for stability)

    God that RRP is crazy

    • I know, and they are not the only manufacturer who priced their WiFi 7 mesh systems at this level although these are high priced higher because they are quad band (which offers a wireless backhaul). As much as that it is a nice upgrade compared to my Asus XT8, I will stay put for now as I can't justify the upgrade cost.

      • I'm on the fence, have had the XT8 since launch and i'm fairly sure I paid over a grand for it back that like 5 years ago? It's worked reasonably well but I do have 2 rooms which just have terrible wifi and general cellular reception, was thinking that this might fix or improve it… decisions decisions -_-

        • Never thought I'd ever buy these! Coming from GT-AX11000 and a pair of XT8. Buy now, think later….

@nubix: I upgraded for home office from xt8. It is better, less cranky to setup in a mesh than the xt8. I was more interested about performance as i have 1gig internet but it was marginal. Handy having a 10g for the nas.

        • Have you gone into the settings to boost the performance of the XT8 wifi?

I have a pair as well, flashed the firmware to boost the signal (mine was from Amazon EU), then I ended up buying a BE88U to act as the main router for the mesh setup since it allowed me to run the XT8 routers with a 2.5G wired backhaul. This closed up my dead spots.

For that price the APs had better be following me around automatically to ensure optimal coverage.

  • Can you add another access point other than exact same pricey model?

I think you can (providing it's also from Asus) but it may slow the system down. Say if you add a WiFi 6 mesh satellite to this WiFi 7 system, one would think that devices connected to the Wifi 6 satellite will be on WiFi 6 speed which sort of defeat the purpose of paying this much for WiFi 7.

      • Thanks for the reply. I would get bt6 something like that, just the TV usually unstable with wifi and need a point next to it.

Even i don't need it yet as orbi system works ok, this is very tempting deal.

Included Trend Micro security is great, no subscription fees required.

Asus have a promo and this qualifies for Monster Hunter Wilds

    • Thanks Ruckus - I didn't even know that. Makes it even more worthwhile since I was probably gonna buy MHW anyways!

      • It's definitely handy and it's one of th reasons I chose to pay more for my Asus be88u and xt8 setups in the past over tplink and Netgear since theirs have paid subscriptions. Plus AI mesh is handy for not letting my old routers go to waste.

  • Ordered.

But I'm not getting an email confirmation or even an order #.

    • you will get it. takes a minute or two to arrive

      • Thanks. I am looking forward to it.

  • I am spending way to much money last few days… First 2x Samsung Sound Bar and now this…. Thanks Op!

  • wait for 250…max 1 year?

Joke RRP, thanks. Bought 1 for cocomelon 4k

  • Thank OP, Got one

Just curious is there a reason to get such a good pair of mesh router? Max speed ISPs offer are 1Gbps anyway, how would this improve anything besides maybe area coverage?

    • +1

In addition to the coverage, I'd say it's partly to futureproof against coming increases to internet speeds in future and partly to take advantage of some of the Wifi 7 core capability improvements like MLO etc. Lastly - given you get 2 for $900, they are probably superior to other models in that price range for features and support over the long term.

All that said, I appreciate it's probably not for everyone as depending on your home setup and devices it could definitely be overkill.

With regard to my comment on NBN speeds, NBNCo have already announced they are planning on unlocking 2Gbps this year - see below:
      https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/…

      • Yes, not everyone will need this. I decided to upgrade from Asus XT8, considering that this has got 2 GB RAM vs 512 GB on XT8, I have observed that sometimes XT8 takes up more than 90% RAM, not sure if its because I have close to 50 devices. The main motivation is local transfer. I also don't want to buy anything other than Asus considering the Threat protection that I get without any subscription cost. Parental control is awesome. Logs can provide some level of information if any endpoint is sending requests to spam or compromised external hosts etc.

$900 price point for 2 mesh systems is quite good and the the only reason I decided to upgrade now.

Hopefully, this is not a pricing error.

      • In regards to NBN speed, even with 2Gbps, doesnt even wifi 5 support bandwith up to 3.5gbps? I'm not familiar with other improvements of wifi7, but your average 6e routers as well would be more than sufficient I believe.

I would be more than happy to buy a better router if NBN offers 5gbps speed (and some decent upload speeds) but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

    • Transferring data locally.

  • Don't buy in to the Wi-Fi 7 marketing, for about 99.9% of residential you don't need anything more than Wi-Fi 6E mesh for the foreseeable future. MLO gives 0 benefits to your clients unless you're connecting to the root/master/primary AP and it has 6 GHz radio enabled for both client & backhaul (which I doubt it will).

Get a (hopefully) cheaper Wi-Fi 6E mesh set, use 6 GHz for your backhaul (sending data between APs) and 5 GHz on your client SSID (what your devices will connect to).

  • Ordered one thank you. My main issue is coverage more than speeds hopefully this product helps

  • Pretty good price anyone suggests about speeds?

  • Grabbed one. I've been using AI mesh to cover my meross garage door openers and inverter at the other end of the house. Sadly whenever a phone roams onto that node the speed degradation is noticeable as I can't run Ethernet backhaul. Hopefully a dedicated 5ghz backhaul should fix that.

  • Looks like price has gone up to $1899. Hope it wasn't a price error.

    • seems like a price error

  • Folks,
just check my order, they changed from $899 to $1899, so the order status now saying only partially paid.
You might want to check yours….

  • I have an invoice that says fully paid but i guess ill be getting a refund. Yep logged in and says partial paid.

  • Yeah got the invoice that says fully paid, but logged into account and it shows partial payment pending.

They Cancelled my order - Price Error… oh well….

    • Same here.

  • While it's disappointing that this is a price error, it also goes to show how companies are so out of touch with their pricing. I personally think it was too much to pay at $899, let alone $1899 and we don't even get the BQ16 Pro version. I think those of us who have the Asus XT8, we will probably have to stay with those for awhile.

    • I have decided to stay with XT8 for now 😊

  • I got refund processed email and already reflected in my PayPal account.

  • I got a refund. Order cancelled by scorptec

  • For those who are thinking to get his for $1899, I suggest you check out Amazon.AU.
BQ16 Pro on limited time for only $1920.
with 2 6Ghz channels, you can have a proper MLO on 2.4, 5 and 6 Ghz.
