TL;DR:
If you’re after a high-quality WPI, this is one of the best on the market. Ticks all the boxes: high protein, low carb/fat, great taste, no fillers, and Aussie made. Usually ~$170, but this deal gets it to ~$125.55 with the Amazon Business promo – best price I’ve seen.

One for those looking for a high-quality Whey Protein Isolate – they don’t come much better than International Protein’s Amino Charged WPI. I’ve been using this stuff for years and haven’t found anything that comes close in terms of taste, mixability, and results.

The 3kg (75 scoop) tubs usually go for between $170-$180. Recently, the best price I’ve seen was $137.39 (Chemist Warehouse - Oct 2024) each, 2 for $274.78, so if you're stacking it with the current Amazon Business promo, you're saving another ~$23. Solid value for what I consider to be the best on the market.

I asked ChatGPT to summarise reviews from multiple reputable supplement review sites/blogs, and here’s what it came up with:

  • That's not a great price for WPI

    • +3

Is there anywhere currently lower than $41.7/kg?

      • VPA was $41.60 until yesterday when buying 3kg and you could choose individual flavours for each kg.
Looks like this one is slightly higher protein though.

    Just analysed this product.
Out of 16 WPI's that I've studied this has the lowest quality score out of all of them, by some margin.

Typically WPI's have a high DIAAS of around 1.0 - 1.4. This has 0.69. The previous lowest WPI in my list was 0.97. So it's very poor even for a WPC.

It's let down by comparitively low levels of Histidine. 1051mg is very low compared to the average of 1700mg. The body can't utilise any of the other amino acids once it's used all of the Histidine (the limiting amino acid in this case).

So I'd be rethinking your choice of WPI. Even with the Amazon Business discount (which could be applied to any protein on Amazon) there's certainly plenty of better quality options on the market.

If you've been getting good results with this I can only imagine the gains you'd make with a higher quality protein source.

More info on DIAAS and protein quality scores.

      Man knows his WPI.

What are your current top 3?

      • +12

It's essentially based on protein quality x current price. So it obviously fluctuates and the last time I updated prices was a couple of weeks ago.
You also need to factor in flavour, texture etc if that matters to you.

Highest DIAAS (If the amino acid profiles on the products are accurate)
        1. Amino Nutrition WPI 1.4
        2. SSD WPI 1.36
        3. Pure Product WPI 1.22

        Best Value - Quality adjusted
        1. INC 100% WPI 2kg $34.50/kg (regular sale price)
        2. Amino Nutrition WPI $54.95/kg
        3. Pure Product WPI 2kg $50/kg

There's many more than the 16 WPIs I've look at, but it certainly gives you a good feel for industry benchmarks.

        • So we should wait for the next INC to be on Sale at Chemist Warehouse - $34.50/kg seems amazing in this current market! My last purchase back in December was $30 a KG with Amino Z (minus the bucks :( )

How often does the INC go on special? In saying that I am hoping Amino do a EFY deal so I can use my bucks!

          • +1

            @noslappers: Seems fairly regularly.

INC does seem like the best, decent taste and decent price, the sweeteners aren't too brutal and its NZ dairy. I should have bought more than 2kg last sale

I’ve actually tried all on your list except SSD WPI and had stomach issues with all of them. The one I linked originally is what I have found to work best for me. I do get protein from other sources throughout the day, so not solely relying on a shake. Definitely interesting about your DIAAS analysis though! Something I’ve never looked into!

          • @Buz1986: Gonna plus this comment as I find that it's true. Much much better on the tummy.

        • Have you analysed Bulk Nutrients? How do they stack up compared to the other 16? Appreciate your info!

          • +1

            @SydneySpendthrift: No problem.

Their WPI sits in the middle of the group 7/16 with a DIAAS of 1.05 at $5.90 / 100g protein (quality adjusted)

Their WPC is less competitive sitting 12/14 with a DIAAS of 0.72 at $7.40 / 100g protein (quality adjusted)

        • May I ask your thoughts on myprotein WPI?

I understand it has appeared here in deals and is a major UK supplier you would perhaps be familiar with

Prices have been under 35/kg, currently approx 49/kg

Imo true if you are purely using this. But daily requirement is 1.5g. 100g of chicken breast has 1.1g, beef roughly same per 100g. An egg has 150mg. All I am saying is that if you are consuming other sources of protein, this is not that bad.

      • daily requirement is 1.5g

I think you meant 1.5g per kg of body weight. Some believe closer to 2kg.
So taking some form of protein supplement makes it much easier/convenient for most people to reach daily targets (unless you're happy eating a lot of meat/eggs/legumes etc, which also add more calories).

        this is not that bad.

It's better than nothing. But it's not very good relative to other protein supplements.
If you're going to spend money on a supplement anyway, why settle for poor quality when you could buy a higher quality product for the same money?
        That's my logic anyway.

        • I was actually talking about the histidine. Daily requirement is 12mg/kg at least as per the literature. High dose histidine can lead to adverse effects. 1.5g per Kg is I think not correct. Thanks

          • @Tin man: Oh. My bad. Thought you were talking about protein in general.

    • This is probably true if you were only drinking this protein as a source for the entire day. But we eat plenty of other stuff too.

Also at this price, gulping down a little more protien and you still get the same level of histidine or whatever missing, plus loads of extra amino acids. right? Should we really worry that much?

Moreover many companies dont even update thier amino acid list. For example aminoz updated thier whey source and they did not even update the newer test results for a long time, let alone the amino acid list.

  • How do I access this deal. Only got prime and it's showing 180 for me.
