Laptop Screen Replacement

I bought a HP Pavilion Plus Laptop 14-eh0033TU (6X497PA) for my son when he started high school through a great deal on OzBargain (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/747288). He recently broke the screen at school, and I'm wondering if it's possible to buy a replacement screen and do a DIY repair. What's the best way to source a replacement screen? Is eBay a good option?

Have you googled the model name and words like “replacement screen”? What comes up? eBay could have them also, what has a search indicated?

    • yes, looked up for "14-EH0033TU" & screen & replacement and got only few results from ebay. Screen is about $160. Checked with online quotes for screen replacement . They vary form $250-$350.

      • Try removing the old screen, see how hard it is. You are lucky it isn't an Apple or Microsoft product.

The ebay listing looks legit. But be aware it may not be the same quality as the original.

Used to work for a business that did this. Generally, it's pretty easy. For HP and other big brands, you should be able to locate the service manual for the model which breaks it down into steps.

Might be worth taking it apart to get the part number of the LED screen first. Might be different across the same laptop models. Search for the part number on eBay and you should fine one, or a compatible one.

Yes, I will open up the LED screen and get the part number to search the replacement online.

  • generally only a few wires need to be unhooked and then restored but it varies a lot between models.

There will be a youtube video somewhere for your specific model - watch that to see how complex your model is. If it’s pull the whole innards apart then you might feel getting a pro to do it is worth the money. If it’s a few screws then do it yourself

  • Make sure you watch the youtube videos as it is a PITA for some laptops to change the LCD.

Take the LCD out and make sure you put the screws and parts in zip lock bags and label them.

If you are okay with taking the LCD out then order a screen and put it back in the reverse of how you took the LCD out, but if you were not okay then you will have to pay for someone to put the LCD in.

    • put the screws and parts in zip lock bags

A small magnet is good for keeping them together.

That deal is coming up to three years old. Maybe buy a new one? ATO says laptops are fully depreciated after three years, totally worthless. Could use the broken one as a retro gaming thing plugged into your TV.

  • I successfully removed the screen and ordered a replacement from AliExpress with a discount and cashback.

I also purchased a new screen frame, as the original was damaged, along with some adhesive tape. The total cost was approximately $160.

Removing the screen was easy; the difficult part will be installing the replacement.

  • Thanks all for your time to help me out. Laptop was fixed perfectly, it was just a single connector to screen.
