    BMW DLC FTL

DLCs for cars should be banned

  • +4

Wow, the subscription options are crazy.

  • +9

I love how we are in a world where you have to pay for features in your car after buying the car.

    (profanity) Microtransaction cars.

    • +1

Annoyingly true, similar to software companies moving to subscription-based usage to keep the cashflow going.

    • I suspect the targeted BMW clientele has a lot more dosh to not worry about these small costs.

The current G generation of BMWs is a lot more locked down and can't change the settings / activate services. In contrast to the E and F generation can be tweaked more easily.

Just don't buy BMWs if you think these kind of tactics is ridiculous.
The BMW repair / maintenance bills are also in a completely league to the typical Toyota / Hondas. For people who can afford those level of servicing costs these microtransactions really don't mean much to them.

      • "The BMW repair / maintenance bills are also in a completely league to the typical Toyota / Hondas."
        Yes.

"For people who can afford those level of servicing costs these microtransactions really don't mean much to them."
        Don't know about that.

On top of that. Bit pathetic on some of the packages like high beam assist.

Feels more like can't afford the complete package and went with povo pack, then get screwed with service packs.

Bizarre that some of these are not part of the car.

Toyota doesn’t have cheap servicing - double their service costs to compare yearly costs to most brands that only need servicing every year.

    A what …. This exists o.o”

  • +1

$30pm to help you park your car better. Or just learn how to drive properly. FFS get nicked BMW. Can't believe losers people buy into this shite.

    • How about high beam assistant hahahaha, wowowow.

      • +1

Too lazy to flick a stalk. JFC.

Your BMW automatically does it for you. You can now drive more safely

I would argue the opposite. It just encourages complacency and a reduction in situational awareness both of which makes you a less safe driver.

        • C'mon, you don't need the "BMW IconicSounds Sport" pack?

          Don't be pathetic.

  • soon we will have pay to brake feature

    • I am amazed about $176 to "Transform driving into a more intense experience. Your BMW plays the engine sound to match your driving mode inside your vehicle." https://www.bmw.com/en-au/shop/ls/dp/ISS_Offer_au

What a world we live in….. People pay for extra quietness & sound-proofing in luxury cars, and pay again to have the fake sound pumped into the cabin.

In the older BMW generations Active Sound Design is free by default AFAIK - and many people would turn it off if they could.

Do any BMWs come with these features as standard, or do they disable them in the cheaper models so buyers can enable them later?

    • It's market/region dependant. In Australia, there usually isn't much you can buy apart from Service Packages (i.e. pay for 2-4 years of services upfront), Map Updates (you usually get 3-4 years of updates included), and Live Traffic (usually 3-4 years of updates included).

The idea behind software locking features was to try to save production costs by limiting the number of individual SKUs they were manufacturing. Taking light control as an example, on an older BMW, there would be 5-6 different control modules available to cover scenarios where a given trim had front or rear fogs, auto dimming or not, automatic lights or not etc. It never really hit Australia because we only get a few trim options, and usually they are locked behind significant hardware requirements.

Totally get people's frustrations with the idea of paying a subscription for something like heated seats, but it did provide the option for someone to buy a car without heated seats (saving on that option up front) and then change their mind later on. The messaging/marketing around it was horrendous though so they've backed off on a lot of these ideas.

I dont understand how it helps BMW save cost for itself or for the customers?

The hardware which actually costs money to build is already installed and hence is the part of build cost of the car.

The hardware comes to life only after its activated remotely by software, which is just a key press on the keyboard and hence costs nothing in terms of $.

The people not activating the features are actually paying for the people activating it.

        • At certain volumes, it can be cheaper to include the hardware than not.

E.g. if 98% of BMWs of a certain chassis are optioned with heated seats, it may be cheaper for them to have all seats with heaters integrated, rather than have 2 seat SKUs, or engineering efforts to produce a seat with optional provision for heater and extra manufacturing steps and associated assembly line costs for the 98%.

          • @OzJunkGain: So, why charge extra for that? The company is already optimising and saving with this strategy.
Its stingy for a company that is already selling an over priced car but still craves for extra penny.

            • +1

              @TheMills: I'm not defending them for charging a fee/subscription. I think it's ludicrous.

The point I'm making is that it can be cheaper at scale to just fit some options to all vehicles on a given production line.

              • @OzJunkGain: 👍
As a customer, this is what hurts me. Overpriced products and the companies stretching extra mile to rip-off customers more with stupid justifications.

  • I bought a BMW M440i and most of the available connected store apps came with the car. I paid extra for the one that uses your onboard cameras as a dashcam of sorts, mainly because that avoided me having to get a separate dashcam. I also had the servicing for the length of time I'll own the car thrown in as well. This is the only BMW I've ever bought but I assume that certain models have these apps thrown in.

Not my Circus, Not my Monkeys.
I brought Lexus branded Toyota, Done with Big Money Worries.
They have it all built in to the price and it is a very nice place to be when its one and done.
