OzBargain 2025 EoFY Charity Donations - $20,000 to 5 Charities of Your Choice

Updated 22 June 2025 — it has been a tight contest but these 5 are the top charities voted by the OzBargain community:

  • Royal Children's Hospital Foundation
  • Black Dog Institute
  • State Emergency Service (of all states)
  • Starlight Childrens Foundation
  • OzHarvest

I'll do the round of donation on Monday. Thanks to all who have voted this year.

Hi all! We are running our biannual poll for OzBargain's charity donations. For EOFY this year, we are again donating $20,000 to the 5 most voted charities by our community. Similar rules to our last year's donation poll:

  • I'll take top 30 charities from our last Xmas donations poll that did not get picked, i.e. not the top 6.
  • The OzBargain community can vote on which charities they would like OzBargain to donate to. Poll expires mid-night AEST this Friday (20 June 2025).
  • 5 most voted charities will receive $4,000 donation each from OzBargain during next week.
Rules
  • At most 1 vote per account. Ghost accounts will be penalised as per OzBargain terms of use.
  • Votes will be hidden until the poll finishes.
  • Top 5 charities will picked, based on the number of votes.
  • Users are allowed to change votes before the poll finishes.

Some ozbargainers are also doing The Push-up Challenge this year (19 members, grown from 12 last year) to raise mental health awareness. So if you are thinking of donating to a charity this year, consider Team OzBargain!

FAQ

Q: Why isn't <charity organisation> in the list?
A: The list of 30 charities was taken from last Xmas' donation. Your preferred charity might have already received donation in Christmas last year (Cancer Council, Royal Flying Doctor Service, beyondblue, Dementia Australia, Lifeline, Kids With Cancer Foundation Australia), or didn't receive enough votes previously. You can wait until December when we are doing our Xmas donation to make a suggestion.

Yep. Happy to see ozb donate a chunk of $ every year. It's almost 1c per jv post which is impressive.

All are worthy causes, pretty hard to vote on which is "better".

  • +7

    Thanks Scotty.

PanKind, The Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation

Kitty’s get my vote.. dogs and kids always get the love

    • But never men

  • +2

Thanks Scotty. Some very worthy causes there. Obviously we “professional” bargain hunters are making enough coin to give a tad back to those in need.

  • Great stuff

  • +3

    Fantastic. Great move.
    Well done Scotty

  • Thanks Scotty

  • Well done Scotty.

  • Thanks Scotty. It's wonderful that you continue to do this.

  • Thanks Scotty - great cause.

  • Thanks Scotty- true Australian spirit shining through as usual! :)

Is their a trustworthy website somewhere that tells us the proportion of $ that charities spend on admin/overheads?

    • +1

There are some US sites which show this but I've not come across an AU equivalent. Changepath for example doesn't show that.
In any case, if you're trying to maximise the benefit of a donation, I'd suggest checking out thelifeyoucansave and give well.

      Some information available here https://www.acnc.gov.au/charity

  • Thanks for doing this!

  • Thanks

  • Thanks Scotty and team

  • Thanks Scotty. Appreciate the generosity.

  • One of the reasons I stick with OZB. Thanks Scotty.

  • Thanks!

I started donating a few years back all because of Scottys philanthropy.

  • I would like to suggest the epilepsy research foundation.

  • Love this.

  • GG Scotty.
Will wait until Dec to suggest a charity to help Palestine. The problem is, the charity that we do doesnt really reach those in need in this case so I will have to do some research before suggesting.

Medecins Sans Frontiers are working with all sides in Gaza, so you could donate to them

  • Great work again Scotty!

  • An amazing initiative.

  • Thanks Scottie

  • keep up good work Scottie

  • Thanks :)

  • This is a great initiative, thank you.

  • Good work Scotty

  • Awesome initiative!

  • dumb question, how does ozbargain make this money? does the site make a boatload of money considering they can afford to donate so much, or is Scotty just really generous haha

    • they sell your data. It's very interesting, too.Worth every BTC I paid. I had no idea you were like that, or lived where you do.

      ; )

      • of all the companies selling my data, at least this one's for a good cause!

      • +1

They bought JV's data, but immediately asked for a refund.

    • +9

I probably won't call donating $50k-$60k a year a "boatload of money" unless you have a super tiny boat. Instead we might want to ask why aren't those other profit-making companies donating more to the society. Most companies have obligation to maximise profit for the shareholders I guess, whereas I'm OzBargain's sole shareholder. While I also like to make profits, sometimes I look around and think I really already have more than enough.

As of OzBargain we have 2 revenue sources

      • banner ads (some of you may not see it if you have ad blocking)
      • affiliate commission (only from those who aren't logged in OzBargain)

Ad revenue has been shrinking since 2022 but our expense is growing every year. Not sure how many more years can we keep on doing this but let's just focus on the needs right now.

Edit: and no, we do not directly sell your data. Some of the banner ads network might run their DMP to figure out how they can target you with ads, but that's outside our control.

      • How much does it cost to run Ozbargain?

        • +5

Majority of the expense is personnel. All moderators are full time staff, and quite a few with 10+ years of experience working at OzBargain. When you add up Australian salary, superannuation, tax, etc — that's a lot.

The same can be said about the charities.

How much do you think it cost to run a charity? Usually people who donate imagine that everything goes into the actual material or service. However many large charities also employee a large workforce which means multiple layers of management + services not directly related to the cause (fundraising being one of them). Everything adds up.

omg the man himself replied, thanks for the insight! I just realised I've been keeping adblocker on the whole time on this site, so I just turned it off for Ozbargain. Appreciate the work you guys do!

      • +1

WHAT i only just found out you went to UNSW and CBS! that absolutely so crazy I went to UNSW and CBS 😱😱😱 probably not that uncommon in hindsight

also i never realised you're Taiwanese, why am I not surprised an asian founded this site LOL (i say that as a fellow asian too 🤣)

        • +3

Believe it or not, I am still going to UNSW and CBS (churching there for over 30 years now).

          • @scotty: That's so cool, helping with FOCUS church I imagine?

      • affiliate commission (only from those who aren't logged in OzBargain)

I didn't know this and had no problem with OzBargain receiving affiliate commission from something I was already going to buy anyway. Should I log out to click the affiliate links for my purchases? Would that assist the shrinking ad revenue?

(I could turn off the ad blocker, but my own mental ad blocker would prevent me from clicking the ads anyway.)

        • +1

You can just open the deal in an incognito window, it is easier than logging out. Only some merchants have affiliation though, you will see the tag if it is active, eg.

Compassion Australia should be removed. They have enough money.

  • Thanks for this. Kids off streets is my go to, unfortunately some of the accommodation available is why we have kids on streets.
Poverty is a choice, made by government.

  • Thanks for your work

  • After seeing how much the Sikh Volunteers Australia did for the floods on the mid north coast they've got my vote this year.

I couldn't believe the amount of meals and time they provided.

  • Cheers Scotty!

  • Thanks mate, you're the gift that keeps giving.

We spent 6 months with our baby boy at RCH last year. While we didn't get the ending we hoped for, we are so grateful for the care they provided which gave us more time with our son.

I made a post about our experience if anyone is interested:

  • You’re a good person Scotty. Have voted.

As of SES it was suggested by Tommyaka last December without specifying the state. In that case I have decided to donate to my home state which is NSW. I'll do the round of donation on Monday. Thanks to all who have voted this year.
