The Push-up Challenge 2025 - Join The OzBargain Team to Raise Fund for Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Awareness

We are going to do The Push-up Challenge again this year! For those who like to join, here's Team OzBargain. For this year the participants will have to do 3,214 pushups between 4-26 June, to raise fund for suicide prevention & mental health awareness.

See our posts from 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Fund raised by Team OzBargain will be donated to Lifeline Australia. Any OzBargain members can join, and remember to download the app before 4 June to log your push-ups. Moreover, if anyone in team OzBargain managed to complete at least 50% of the requirements, i.e. logged at least 1,607 push-ups before 26 June, OzBargain will donate $100 to you (up to $2,000 for the whole of Team OzBargain).

For those aren't considering doing the pushing — if you are thinking of donating to the cause of suicide prevention and mental health awareness, you can donate to Team OzBargain or specific individuals. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

@Jimothy Wongingtons You should participate again.

I probably should, my daily calorie intake is freaking off the charts atm. Physical activity at all time low since I just got over a case of shingles and then flu…

Might be a bit tough to wrap your head around, but, friends and family don't want their friends and family dead?
Your personal circumstances aren't the case for everyone.

      • It's my understanding that it's relatively affordable and accessible for a motivated person to voluntarily end their life.

On the other hand, saving a life seems to be reserved for those with the economic means to facilitate such an outcome.

The choice to stay alive shouldn't be impacted by your ability to pay for it.

We have been donating to various charities over the years and mental health/suicide prevention has been something that I care about.

It's not about making ending own life harder. It's not about euthanasia. It's about mental health. We have lost many people due to depression every year and many can be prevented. Resources are needed to get that working — thus this Push-up Challenge here for fund raising.

If anyone is triggered by this dark monologue please reach out to a trusted family member or friend. If that's not an option for you there are still plenty of people who care:

      • Lifeline 13 11 14
      • Suicide Call Back Service 1300 659 467.
      • SuicideLine Victoria 1300 651 251
      • MensLine Australia 1300 78 99 78
      • Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800

Probably because mental health isn't really covered by medicare or the public health systems of the country. So there's a need for charity.

      Your experience is not universal.

I feel sorry for you having to suffer through that and understand your thinking, but it’s wrong.

Plus it misses the point, this initiative is about helping those with mental health issues - not stopping terminally ill people seeking euthanasia…

Also worry remembering as already said by Timthetoolman:

friends and family don't want their friends and family dead

  • Thanks scotty. Lets push again

Would like to take part, but like many OzBargainers I find the Challenge of doing just one push up to be difficult

    • +3

If you are actually serious, you don’t need to do strict pushups. Knee supported ‘half’ pushups are acceptable - or a range of alternative exercises are suggested here too

    • Even a football team needs a cheer squad.

You can always become involved by finding another way to support and encourage the frontline participants.

Did you know, that for every front line position in Australian Defence Force, there are nine more people behind the scenes supporting them and making it possible for the front line to do what they do.

Every one of those people play an important part, each of them just gives what they are able to give to help achieve the overarching goal.

  • Is there an option if you don't want to download the app?

    • +1

App is there just for logging the push-ups, i.e. just for sending up a number. I don't think it needs any permission other than notification. I can't remember whether you can do the logging on their website, but you should be able to sideload it on an unused old Android phone to just log the push-ups a few times a day.

      • So we don't start logging the push ups until the 4th of june?

        • +1

That's correct. There will be different numbers that you need to do each day, and doing more won't overflow to the next day. Usually start easy but there will be some 200+ push-ups days later on.

How does a person doing push ups prevent someone else committing suicide?

    • Link I just followed to donate had connections with lifeline. From that I assume that any money these guys are able to generate will be directed towards them or similar agencies to utilise the funds as they believe are most appropriate to positively address mental health issues.

    How?

I'm a bit of a lazy bum, but keen to kick in $200 towards supporting someone else's efforts.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

  • The Push-Up Challenge starts tomorrow! Right now we have 18 members signed up for the challenge, and several have been doing this for a few years. What does everyone do to "get ready"?

  • Currently in a different team, but happy to see ozbargain is participating too!

Although my arms won't happy be later on…

  • +5

I know quite a few have already passed the halfway mark today (1,607 pushups). I'll try to do the donations the next time they are doing a donation matching day.

    • Just so you know, the donation matching day seemed to be exhausted very quickly last week. We made a number of donations after 10am to my daughter, and even the first one at 10.06am wasn't quick enough to get dollar matched.

So, you might need to be doing them right at 10am for it to double.

      • Yeah good idea.

      • +2

Looks like it's going to be tomorrow — again, the first $100k donations only. Now it feels like a shopping event that I need to get credit card ready in the form filler to get that money matching bargain.

  • hey Scotty
how can i be reminded for next year?

  • Who is bong on the OzBargain Team? You need to turn on your donation button…

    • Apologies scotty, I didn't realise it was even off, but I've turned it on.

    • Thanks Scotty received the email notification. Thanks for donating and raising awareness for a good cause.

I've definitely learned to try and space the pushups out during the day and not leave them all to the end of the day! My arms and core certainly weren't prepared for this.

      • +2

I am spacing out 20-30 pushups every 1-2 hours, hoping I can get all done before bed.

    • Thanks Scotty - in true OzBargain style you successfully managed to trigger the donation doubling also for all the members who had past the minimum threshold. Thanks for your generosity and well done! 😀

      • OzBargain over the years have taught me to do all the form pre-fillings before the start of the sale…

  • +1

    Fantastic!

Thanks Scotty and thanks to all the people doing the pushups!

Dollar matching day again tomorrow so I will do the next round of donation for those who missed out last time.
