[NSW] What Private Health Insurance Provider I Should Choose for Loose Skin Surgery

I recently had a consultation with a plastic surgeon after losing 83KG. Basically, I need a Fleur-de-lis and my whole chest area removed with nipple graft, 8-10 hour surgery time with at least 4 days in hospital. He said that just for the surgery time alone without private health insurance I would be paying up to ~$30k and that's not including his fee for the surgery + recovery in hospital.

Now I really don't know what health fund to pick, right now I'm looking at:

HIF Gold Top
Bupa Gold Comprehensive
HBF Gold Elevate
HCF Hospital Gold

My main concern is that I get denied even though he has deemed it as non-cosmetic and I'll be eligible for the mbs item numbers

TLDR: Looking for gold private health insurance that won't muck me around (he said that his previous patients have had issues with NIB).

What are the waiting periods with each?

all are 12 month waiting periods I think (pre existing condition)

  • Are you 100% sure that the insurance will cover this type of surgery? Usually they deem it cosmetic surgery and don't cover it.

I would give them a call before purchasing, call as a general question.

    • He said it would fall under the medical necessary category and I would get a rebate, he didn't give me the mbs item numbers it falls under though. I guess I'm more worried about the hospital fees

      • "He" is not the health fund. Is "He" giving you an iron clad guarantee in writing that you will be covered? If not, best to check with the health fund.

      • Get quotes and send them to the funds for a response.

  • First check if they do retrospective coverage.

    • This is Australia. You serve out your waiting period and you have coverage.

  • Just fast it off with natural Autophagy!

I lost 80kg without any sag that way (utilizing autophagy) …

    • He may want to enjoy his new slim body while he's still young.

      • Yeah, cause 6 month is such a long time out of your young life - with the benefits of no ugly scars …

4 hours of endogenous growth hormone per day does wonders!

It's just one of the benefits of losing that weight with intermittent fasting vs calory deficit / ozempic ;)

        • lmfao I've been doing 16hr fasts since 2018

I'll push for longer, I have nothing to lose

          • @rw: 16hours is where growth hormone and autophagy just start to ramp up …

If you were to go 20-24 hours, you will get 4-8 hours exposure of both ;)

      • Life is definitely on pause with this shit

lol at no point does it get cheaper with insurance than paying it outright

    • Username checks out.

    • hospital costs man

  • Ask the surgeon whether they and/or the hospitals they use have any preferences or arrangements with.

Also, you don't have to remain with the 1 fund to serve out your waiting periods. Join one of the many available 'pay for X weeks, get x weeks free' offers. Then, move to the next deal. If you follow the 'pay for 1 month, get 6 weeks free' offers, you will save approximately 58% in premiums.

After serving out your 12 months, move to the fund you prefer for when you have your surgery.
