How much extra to get the mirror?
gateway drug to better cameras
Better than what? This camera is less capable than most phones on the market nowadays.
This camera is less capable than most phones on the market nowadays.
True, this camera cannot make or receive calls….
Wouldn't call this a "gateway drug to better cameras", it's more of a fun gimmicky experience bringing back the feel of film cameras.
Shoots in portrait, doesn't shoot RAW format, image quality isn't so good, in film simulation mode you have to pull the lever each time after you take a photo, and also can't preview until your digital "film roll" is done and processed on your phone.Interesting concept but not so good hardware to support it, especially for the price.
Doesn’t shoot raw, so for those reasons I’m out.
Doesn’t shoot raw
Do you like it raw?
Raw is always preferred because it allows you to have creative control rather than letting the camera determine your creativity. It gives you much more flexibility, for instance, just imagine taking a photo now and wanting to edit it differently years from now with a more enlightened artistic eye, your capacity to edit that shot would be greatly reduced if you were only shooting in jpeg. However don't for one moment think it's all roses, because going raw can potentially have it's drawbacks, such as extending your bloodline.
Then this camera not for you. Tons of other camera can shoot raw, but it's not what this camera aims at.
$1k and doesn't shoot raw? At the risk of sounding like someone who says "my phone can do that", my phone can do that.
Well fuji is popular due to the sooc jpegs they make. Cringe all you want but people buy fuji to use filters/luts straight from the camera. Frankly alot of new hobbyists don't want to sit for hours and edit raws. This makes workflow easier for people to just shoot and share.
Film sim recipes have a huge following, even fuji is starting to market it more by adding film sim dials on new models.
This is a toy camera at a real camera price
People need to vote with their wallets, Fuji are taking the piss now
So what the best alternative that doesn’t rape my wallet as non camera person?
I’d go hit up marketplace for a used Sony APS-C mirrorless
Something along the lines of a a6000 or subsequent models would be a good beginner camera
If you’re after a simple digital camera then maybe an older RX100 series
Thanks.
The whole point (well a big part) of buying into the fuji system is the film Sims. Their simulations are legit and not just your run of the mill filters.
The whole point of this camera is to mimic a film camera from the pictures it takes down to not being able to see your photos until you finish the roll of "film" (take 36 shots).
If you don't edit raws and just use pics straight out of the camera get an older fuji like x-t30 ii or xm5.
Sony a6400 is also a good entry - best autofocus you can get albeit abit dull on colors on the jpeg.
Lumix S9 if you want full frame with ability to use luts kind of like fuji cameras.
I'd go with a second hand Fujifilm xt30 with a lens, no editing required, Fujifilm JPEGs are lovely, easy to use.
Sony is good value, get great technology for the price, but I hate the colours it produces, and the menu is trash.
Canons have nice colours, very natural straight out of camera, best ergonomics and menu, but bang for buck, the most expensive for what you get.
Nikons are pretty good value, but the ergonomics just don't suit me, and I dislike their UI as well.
I’d say the menu part is quite subjective
I’ve used both systems and much prefer the way Sony menu works
Colours I do agree Fuji is better, although the latest Sony’s do have built in picture profiles now
Sony a6400. Even with the kit lens its easy to use for a non camera person. If u want a better lens get the sigma 18-55 instead of the kit lens. Good value all rounder.
You mean the sigma 18-50 f2.8?
Hope to see 22% off xe5 when it release 🥹
Would still be $2.1k though…. There’s no way it should be over $2k RRP for a camera with no weather sealing and poor AF
Good luck with that, good luck with finding them in stock for long enough to discount, even at that price they will sell.
If this were 500-600$ i'd insta-buy.
Its probably best to save pennies for the Rioch GR IV for later in the year.
I looked on facebook marketplace and wasnt happy on what available at reasonable price. I might wait for this camera to come out. Need one for the holidays
Since when is a "faux half-frame 35mm" with fixed lens and optical viewfinder called "mirrorless"? Is my old Kodak Instamatic "mirrorless" too?
It shoots portrait mode when held horizontally - for the Instagram generation. Real hipsters shoot real 35mm.
As an alternative, Flashback cameras are like $150 and does a similar job — digital toy camera with an analog film experience. This camera just has Fuji's filters and a bunch of other 'cool' gimmicks but definitely isn't worth 7x the price.
