The blurry text is still a turnoff

    • theres a windows setting you can change that makes the text much better

      • Setting 125% scaling helps but it's not a solution if you need the screen real estate.

Personally, I use the 2023 model for work at 100% and don't have a problem. Can I see it? Yes. Is it a big deal? No.

      • What is the setting?

    • Is this due to BGR layout?

      • +4

No, this monitor is triangular RGB and Windows has no mechanism to deal with that properly yet.

You can mitigate it somewhat with MacType, but it's only a partial fix.[1]

        • +1

wtf we have triangle rgbs now

          • @AeymothSky: For over three years.
'Pentile' OLEDs were first used in phones 13 years ago (S3) and have been used in dozens of phones since.

    • -1

Don't even notice it on mine after running clear text wizard. Wouldn't want to work on it every day but you don't buy an oled for a work setup anyway.

  • +4

I bought the older 165Hz model of this monitor last year and its amazing, best monitor I've ever owned.

    • I just don't know about the HDR. Do you use it in HDR daily or switch between? I usually have it turned off for normal use, but then the caveat is I forget to switch it on when gaming. And it has long alt tab times and just a general pain. This speaks more to how poorly Windows handles HDR rather than the monitor itself.

Other than that, it's a delight.

      • +1

I mainly use it for games, so I just have HDR on all the time.

      • +2

I run with hdr off normally but enable with win+alt+B, sometimes it even works in game without requiring a game restart.

Worth running even on games without hdr support as auto hdr works a treat most the time.

This is for Windows 11, also be sure to run Windows hdr calibration tool from Windows store.

        • Yeah I use the shortcut too, but frustrating when you have to restart the game.

I'll move to W11 at some stage and hopefully there'll be an improvement.

  • +1

i really want this but i have a 38inch 3840x1600 and im so used to the extra realestate now

  • +1

Any good deals on a ozbargain approved monitor with USB-C?

  • How is this compare to AW3225QF?

    • +1

well ones wide and ones not. Otherwise theyre the same subpixel but the PPI is more in the 32inch so you wont see as much pink fringe. If you do no office work both are fantastic. If you do office work, dont get the 34.

      • why no office work at 34?

        • +1

Just hyperbole and people repeating what is said online. I use the 34 2023 model it's fine. I do all my work, online business, writing and editing on it. No issues.

    • +3

Quite different screens and not exactly comparable, for me it came down to "Do I want widescreen (AW3425DW) OR do I want 4k (AW3225QF) more?"

In the end I chose AW3425DW, as I really wanted widescreen.

I paid $1200 for AW3425DW new, and could of bought the AW3225QF for $650 refurbished. Dont think I want to go back to 16:9.

Waiting till they release 34" at 5k2k resolution until I upgrade again.

      • Yep, to me widescreen is one of the main things that separates PC gaming from console gaming. If you're fortunate to have a console too, widescreen for PC makes more sense to me.

  • Also $954.57 with student 15% discount, need to verify with student email address

    • Try the code generated from Unidays but it not working or do we have to create and log in to an actual student account?

      • +1

I went to My Account > Dell Rewards and Membership > Membership…. and activated the student membership

Don't apply the DNCPAU11 code and it'll auto apply the student discount in the cart

edit: might be able to 2.5% cashback via TCB too, as no codes are being entered with the student discount

        • can confirm it able to get 2.5% cashback via TCB, https://imgur.com/a/2BxKa6c

          • @n33t: ah cool, mine hasn't tracked yet

did you get it for 822.50 or perhaps 904.75?

            • +1

@daemon: i bought it with the student discount so i pay $954.57. TCB doesn't track the 10% GST so the track price should be 867.79 , I don't know why TCB track it as 822.50.

  • +1

Can this go on sale in July again please for that $1000 tax deduction haha

    • why not just buy it now and claim it on this years tax return?

      • +2

I think they are referencing a new flate rate $1000 deduction that only kicks in from July 1st

  • Any good for wfh?

    • +2

Burn-in is still definitely a thing with oled, but not as bad as people say, and really comes down to how much Work vs Gaming do you do I think.

I would say mine is used for work 60% vs gaming 40%, and I have just got one.

If I get burn in, there is still 3 Year warranty on it.

      • +1

The pixel refresh seems to do its job. You'll want to do a few basic tweaks like auto hiding the taskbar and setting a super low screen timeout, but I've used it for WFH and pretty heavy overall use and not noticed any issues (had it over a year now).

    • +1

i wouldnt bother buying an OLED if youre just looking at spreadsheets / pdfs all day.
i'd get one if youre primarily going to use it for gaming/movies/etc though

    • +12

It's OLED mate, that far outweighs the resolution.

  • Oh no, got one yesterday from JB for 1124. Any chance we could get JB price match?

    • JB won’t price match with code discount I believe

    • Give it a try. I got a different monitor price matched with a discount code. No questions asked.

If you haven't opened it, or peeled stickers, can potentially do change of mind return and they generally can't be arsed to deal with the hassle.

Edit: Just noticed that's for the AW3423DW - don't think new one is much different re text.

Good rating(s) at https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/alienware-aw3423…, but two important (IMHO) things to consider:

However, the main downside is that the cooling fan is loud enough that you can hear it in a quiet environment, but if you have music playing or your headphones are on while gaming, you won't hear it. If it bothers you, you sadly can't turn the fan off.

Programs don't render text well with the subpixel layout, so text clarity isn't as good as on other ultrawide displays. Windows ClearType (top photo) doesn't improve the text clarity much… While this subpixel structure isn't ideal, it's not a serious issue, either… The free utility Better ClearType Tuner improves text clarity significantly… However, due to the subpixel structure, there's slight colour fringing on the edge of windows.

This one is being tested right now: https://www.rtings.com/discussions/pzBCKUxTWbQEvMQx/review-u…

Getting stuck with a 500 when checking out. Anyone else have the same issue?

    • yeah I am having the same issue. tried checking out with PayPal as well

    • yeah same, paypal or credit

    • Having the same error, prob a sign stopping me from purchasing this. Might wait for the release of the Gen 3 or 4 panel for Ultrawide next year.

    • Same problem. Talking to Dell Sales chat now. Might just asking them to place the order and email me an invoice or something.

      • I paid but then I received an email saying that there's a payment issue. No where to contact Dell Support other than submitting a ticket.

        • I recieved the quote (from the sales chat rep via email), clicked the pay now button on it and the order went through and funds have been taken from my account by Dell.

    • +1

      update: working now

  • +2

Great price. Your mileage may vary, but I own one and owned the old model, I never noticed any text clarity issues on either.

I feel like it's something I'd notice if it was there, but maybe I'm way more of a pleb then I credit myself of being.

  • Paid $1200 for mine, its a great monitor and can't do much better if you want 34" oled now.

Please be aware, from my experience seems to be some quality control issues with this monitor, but if you get a good one, its a keeper for sure.

  • Do these have any coil whine issues like the AW3423DW?

    • I had 2 of them, both had no coil whine at all from what I could hear.

However, both had issue with some line that appeared in mostly grey backgrounds down the centre of the screen.

      • Oh yeah I had something similar, was fixed by disabling 'darkness stabiliser' in the monitor settings.

        • Yeah I read about all the fixes other people suggested including darkness stabiliser, none of it worked for me. Mine must have been faulty.

    Just another recap

This is Dell's 2025 refresh of their 2023 model the AW3423DWF

The only significant change over the 2023 model is the 240hz refresh rate and minor improvement in brightness and burn-in protection (which is provided by new algorithms)

The latest model is fundamentally based on 2022 technology with all of the text clarity issues from the early QD OLEDs, and it is missing a lot of hardware level improvements that have been included in other QD-OLEDs like the AW3225QF rom the past year which were manufactured under rather different processes.

    • How much of a premium do I have to pay to get a AW3225QF tho?

      • its also not ultrawide btw

      • +1

you cannot compare those, as I wanted the 4k resolution from the AW3225QF but wanted widescreen of AW3425DW, in the end I chose widescreen over higher resolution.

I personally think I dont want to go back to 16:9 anymore, widescreen is just so sexy especially when it comes to single player games.

        • Can’t believe 16:9 is no longer widescreen, smh.

        • Me too. Once you go ultrawide…

    • was under the impression it was still a '2nd gen panel' just that the pixel substructure wasn't updated, at least from reading a few reviews.
did you have some further reading about the manufacturing process you could send? cheers

    • It seems to be a mix bag in regards to Generation of the Panel used, some review sites say 1st gen, others say 2nd gen but using same pixel structure.

Overall, I would say, not worth upgrading from the old DWF model, unless you must have 240hz. Only worth buying if you are buying as a first timer in oled monitors.

    • and it is missing a lot of hardware level improvements that have been included in other QD-OLEDs like the AW3225QF

      Improvements like?

      • Improved peak brightness. Reliability and more burn in protection. Current gen QD OLEDs can be passively cooled, but this older gen panel is actively cooled by a fan which some people cannot tolerate under some environments. These are all summarised in the TFTCentral report quoted above.

AW3225QF also supports Dolby Vision so in supported content, the picture will always look 'right'. Whereas AW3425DW supports only HDR10 so you will have to make compromises in some HDR content.

        • Oh this new one still not passively cooled? Pretty sure I read somewhere it has no fans unless I was looking at wrong monitor

  • Really good price, slight regret getting this for $100 more a month ago.

  • How is the 34" Ultrawide $400 cheaper than the 32" 16:9 equivalent of the exact same model? The AW3225QF is $1500 before discount code.

    • AW3225QF is gen3 panel.

  • FML this looks good af but I don't want curved

    • I have the same form factor in my odyssey g8, you hardly notice the curve.

      • At work our monitors are flat and it's annoying switching between curved at home and flat at work.

I know this because my last workplace had curved Samsung monitors in the office while I had flat at home lol

I do agree you get accustomed if you stick to one screen type.

        • +2

Solution: Buy two of these, one for work and one for home !

  • got one. Thanks op. was beating myself missing out the Refurb deal but this is good enough

  • Thanks OP, also missed the refurb deal but I can justify $954 for a new ultrawide.

  • Will it be a waste to use on my 4060 desktop?

  • Can someone share their take on What is the experience like when going from 2570x1440 to 3440x1440 for full screen gaming?

Do the games scale or go native resolution?

Does the performance goes to shit when using 4070 gpu? (I have 4070 that does really well for 2560 panel i have, just do not want to upgrade gpu because of monitor panel)

    • +1

most modern game has cater for 3440 now, but some older game still need tweak (check https://www.wsgf.org/)

as for performance I cant tell you since it depends on game and I dont have 4070 (i use 4080 with no issue), but if you dont want performance hit maybe you can reduce the quality on the game (for example lesser texture, shadow or draw distance)

      • Thanks for that will check the link ✌️.

Just realised that i’m more focussed on rts games and productivity apps when I use my pc and all those tend to have fair bit of static components around the edges of the windows (menus/ status and progress bars etc).wonder if the oled burn in will become a problem in few years. smh 😬

        • +1

I dont think you need to worry much about that unless you displaying the same thing constantly for 8 hours for the whole year (for example windows taskbar, windows start menu icon)

          • @dione: Thanks again. My wallet is gonna keeel me for this one for sure.

  • Thanks, pulled the trigger.

  • Thanks purchased with edu discount.

  • +1

Should I be hooking this up with hdmi or DP? Will be using gsync.

    • +1

DP would be the better option, since it support higher resolution and refresh rates. but again it depends on the DP version that monitor supported vs HDMI version

      • Thank you. I thought as much. The reason I asked is on the spec page HDMI supports VRR but no mention under DP. Thanks again.

        • +1

No, for this monitor you should use hdmi to get 240hz and disable dsc.
That way you get full 240hz without compression.

If you use DP, you will have to enable dsc for 240hz which can have side effects such as alt tab blackscreen. They skimped on this model and only got DP1.4, not the new DP2.1.

VRR should work on both DP and HDMI.
