[SA] Changes to SA Power Network Tariff and new Export Charge for Solar Owners from 1st Jul

SAPN, from 1s Jul is changing the TOU tarrif timings and bringing in an export charge. So in addition to the approx 9% expected increase, they are inflicting more pain.

https://www.sapowernetworks.com.au/your-power/billing/tariff…

From what I can see, the only change is to the evening Peak period which currently is 3pm to 1am and from 1st Jul, it will change to 4pm to midnight.. so 1 hour is moving to Solar sponge and 1 hour to Off-Peak. Now this will be set for 5 years as the tarrif timings are only reviewied every 5 years. I think this might mean that the solar sponge and off peak rates are going to become more expensive.

They are also bringing a solar export charge as below -

For people with Interval meter (these are the newer smart meters)

  • No Export Tariff applies for the first 9kWh exported to the grid per day between 10am - 4pm.
  • SA Power Networks will charge retailers 1c per kWh for customer exports above the 9 kWh daily threshold between 10am - 4pm.
  • If you don’t use all of your daily free export, it can be used on another day within the billing cycle, which is typically 30 to 31 days.
Energy exported between 4pm - 10am is free and no export tariff applies.

For people with accumulation meter (these are the older meters)

  • No Export Tariff applies for the first 11kWh exported to the grid per day.
  • SA Power Networks will charge retailers 0.75c per kWh for customer exports above the 11 kWh daily threshold.
  • If you don’t use all of your daily free export, it can be used on another day within the billing cycle, which is typically 90 days.

Do these guys think we are overly happy with electricity prices in SA?

Comments

  • At the beginning the export tariffs were as generous sa 40c per kWh (Perth).

Now they want money to give them electricity.

    • in SA, they were 48c and for some people 50c+.. they were locked for I think 25 years, so those people who got on early and paid a premium price for their solar panels are still better off as they continue to receive those great FIT credits.

      • And now essentially everyone else is paying for it. Good stuff government.

And I sincerely thank all the rest of you suckers who are paying for it for the 46c feed in tariff that I've been getting since 2009 and will continue to for another few years. Of course with a 16 year old system that started off tiny by todays standards, and has aged and its output has diminished, its not actually very much in dollar terms, so don't feel too bad about it. In terms of return on the dollar, it was the best investment I ever made.

      • Pretty sure I used to get 67c/kWh or thereabouts. But with a 1.5kWp solar system, so the actual amount of credit was still bugger all.

    • Come in spinners!

More people need to understand it’s the networks who inflict the most bill pain. From changing peak and off peak times, adding demand and reducing solar fees in. While retailers have their hand in this and causing price increases, network fees from the distribution company’s make up over 50% of our bills!

How they fly under the radar so easily is beyond me.

  • Welcome to the city of most expensive power in Australia

    • and the highest percentage of renewables in the market mix.

      • At least cheapest fuel price, go ICE cars lol

Well, people voted for this in the last election (people were warned) so hardly surprising.

  • But I bought realestate on the moon can that claim carbon offsets?

  • The changes to peak times are good, gives people an extra hour during the day to do their washing

  • How does this work. Get us to install solar, then punish solar. Which do you want?
    we are so f'd

    • Yep.. they are now wanting to force us to get batteries so that we can store our energy and joing the VPPs to support the peak demand.. and few years down the line, they might start applying a battery surcharge too once there are too many batteries.

In SA, 1c penalty is not too bad at the moment and none of the retailers have passed it on.. they have accounted for it in thier overall tarrifts, however this is just a start and in future it is only going to get worse.. so people need to stop getting solar and kill the solar industry so that government is forced to rethink what its doing.

  • For anyone following this, I have found that most energy providers have not changed their tarrift timings for Peak hours as, except for Momentum energy.. I havent checked all but I checked the large suppliers and they seem to be carrying on with the 3pm to 1am Peak tarrif timing.
