Just ordered this and a whole lot of other junk I don't need lol

  • Can you get a butter experience using something like this instead of a bag?

Can you get a butter experience using something like this

      If you add butter, yes.

    • That’s what I was wondering.

Does it taste different popping in this vs the bag??

The plastic lid should not go in the microwave..

    • +3

The plastic can't be removed for the dishwasher. Skip.
I just use a mixkng bowl with a large plate covering

      • I have this thing and I have no idea what either of you are talking about.

The plastic lid is microwave safe, and it does come off so you can put the whole thing through the dishwasher, which I do every time we use it (often).

        • Can you remove the plastic handle and plastic base?

The lid itself is silicone so I am not concerned about that.

          • -1

@Fobsessive: Nope, but it says it's dishwasher safe and loads of other plastic things are also fine in dishwashers?

            • +1

@caitsith01: Some people are concerned about the spread of microplastics - washing plastic in dishwashers creates microplastic particles due to the chemicals and heat and these can coat everything else in the dishwasher.

              • @bargainshooter: So people don't put utensils, lunch boxes, kids plates/bowls/cups, etc etc in the dishwasher? Most dishwashers include instructions about where to load plastics for different cycles to avoid over-heating etc…

                • +1

@caitsith01: Yes, I don't put plastics in the dishwasher, and I know other people who also don't put plastics in the dishwasher.
I make a point of also not using dishwasher tablets that have a plastic coating.

                  • @reactor-au: Some dishwasher tablets are coated in PVA but that is wholly water soluble so there's no 'microplastics' (i.e. microscopic pieces of solid plastic) involved.

I guess I can see the concern with washing plastics but there's so much plastic absolutely everywhere that I would have thought the 'extra' from your dishwasher would be negligible.

I bought this when it was like $10, used it twice, it’s kinda junk, leaves too many unpopped corn kernels, and if you microwave too long… it still leaves lots of unpopped kernels, but also burns the popped corn…just do it the stove method or buy one of those machines …

    • thats why you buy it when its $5 :)

    • +4

I had this issue until I (a) stopped using butter in the initial stages and (b) stopped using two full scoops of corn. With those changes I now get good results (I just add butter towards the end).

      • How many scoops do you do?

        • 1.5 instead of 2.

    • +1

It pops nearly 100% for me, but I'm an experienced popper. A little tip, microwave for about 3.5 minutes, remove popped corn and replace unpopped. Re microwave remainder for 2.5 minutes, very few are unpopped.
Also cleaning is very easy. After cooled used warm water and small amount of detergent and wash with cloth, rinse twice and hand dry. This takes about 30 seconds. Don't add butter in the glass jar , do it after in another container (melted) and stir in with seasoning/salt.

      • What do you mean by replace unpopped?

        • I assume the comment just means take all of it out, keep the popped corn out and put unpopped kernels back in.

I have this and it is fantastic! A few things I do to get the perfect pop:

    1) don't bother using the lid as a butter dispenser. Instead, melt some butter and put it directly into the glass bottom.
    2) put as much kernels as you can fit, single layer.
    3) pop for 2 mins, and pour out the ones that have popped. This stops burnt popcorn, and gives space for the kernels at the bottom to heat up and pop. Keep doing this in 30 seconds increments, after the initial 2 mins.

As you can fit, as in on the bottom of the glass? Not using the measuring cup?

What wattage/model is your microwave btw for the timings?

      • Yes correct, fit as many kernels as possible (single layer) in the bottom of the glass container. This is also more than the measuring cup, so you end up getting much more popcorn. Mix the kernels with the melted butter so they are nicely coated. You can add a little salt too.

My microwave is 2000W. You don't have to be too strict on the timing. On the first go, let the kernels pop till the glass container is full. Pour the popped ones out. Let the remaining kernels pop again, and pour the popped ones out when the popping gets more sporadic. Repeat till it's all done. The last batch typically isn't as good so you can keep that in a separate bowl.

  • Just use a pyrex type bowl with lid
