      🔬 Chemical Composition
      - Monosodium (Na⁺): Sodium ion
      - Glutamate (C₅H₈NO₄⁻): The anion derived from glutamic acid (an amino acid)
      - MSG = Sodium + Glutamate

      🧠 How It Works
Glutamate is found naturally in many foods like tomatoes, cheese, and mushrooms. When MSG is added to food, it boosts the umami flavor by activating glutamate receptors on the tongue.

⚠️ Health Concerns – Myth vs. Evidence

      Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)
      - The U.S. FDA, EFSA, and WHO all recognize MSG as safe when consumed in normal amounts.
      - Most people metabolize glutamate from MSG the same way as natural glutamate in food.

Chinese Restaurant Syndrome (aka MSG Symptom Complex)
      - Some people have reported headaches, flushing, sweating, or nausea after consuming large doses of MSG.
      - However, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have failed to consistently reproduce these effects.
      - If symptoms do occur, they typically require very large doses, far more than what is found in food.

      Summary

      Concern Validity Notes
Neurotoxicity ❌ Not supported No credible evidence in humans
Allergy ❌ Rare Not a true allergen
Headaches/Flushing ⚠️ Mild cases Only in sensitive individuals at high doses
Daily consumption ✅ Safe In moderate, food-based amounts

BRB doing a line of MSG

      • -7

I have had those symptoms before knowing that it was a MSG side effect but that was overseas. Never had that experience in Australia

        • +2

there's plenty of MSG in natural food, and in processed food too — chicken stock, beef stew, chips, fish etc etc

I am surprised you are alive till now …. after so much MSG intake from various source.

    • +4

Still sodium so limit it like you would normal table salt. You'd likely season the same dish with salt too so it's easy to eat too much.

    • +3

Too much of is probably going to have some negative aspects. Like most things really. A lot of it stems from anti-Chinese racism from the 80’s Some quack doctor in the late 60’s, early 70’s attributed feeling ill after eating Chinese food and surmised that it must be the MSG.Then there was a growing anti-Chinese food restaurant sentiment that gained traction.

It’s umami. One of the key tastes in food. We’ve all been worse off for avoiding it.

Enjoy it. Add it to your food as you please.

      • +2

There is more to it even inside China. As this is a well established chemical product the cost of manufacturing it is minimal. Over the years there were definitely campaigns launched deliberately creating a negative image for this product and at the same time so called "healthy alternatives" normally cost several times more were introduced into the market, and people are falling for it.

To me you get thirsty if the food contains too much of it but that's about it.

  • +4

its been two years since i got it and im barely a quarter of the way there

Suppose to add to drinking water too.

I see MSG and think MGS (metal gear solid), thinking a new game is released ❗️

    such a sneaking mission….

    MSG ≠ MGS

    Gets me everytime ‼️

  • +7

I did the sums. My local asian grocer sells 25kgs for $125 which equates to $2.50 (46% cheaper).

Now I just need a do a group buy with some ozbargainers and sell it in smaller bags in the carpark lot.

    • Do you offer free delivery?

      • +1

Free delivery? Checked the price of sending 500g in an envelope. Doesn't look like the numbers stack up. I also don't want to explain to the postie what I'm shipping.

    • +2

Make sure you PM jv - he'll take 5kg for sure. Guy thrives on the stuff.

      • -1

I thrive on the stuff. However we use chicken stock powder to add flavour as well… so 25kgs of MSG might take even more decades to go through as per ChatGPT estimates.

      • That's LSD

    • Make sure to meet when it's dark, accept cash only and that everyone wears black hoodies and sunglasses. No one will suspect a thing!

      • That’s just movies. Drug deals are usually done in day time with clothes that blend in to your surroundings so people don’t notice. The best way to hide is in plain sight

Same thing is $4 at Woolworths

    • +1

*for a 250g pack (which is half the size of the pack in this deal).

Same product yes, but Amazon is much better value ($0.63 more for twice as much).

  • -2

    Scary

  • Pardon my ignorance but wasn't MSG a quasi-toxic condiment, secret poisoning of next door Chinese meals, etc etc etc

    Honestly asking.
My first experience with MSG "in a salt shaker" was this is SOOOO tasty … just to be told I was going to die of poisoning.

    What is the truth?
Is it that bad? Is it nearly bad at all?
Is it not really bad at all and it is just a harmless condiment. Like salt and pepper, like hot jalapeños and so on.

  • Just bought a 1 pound bag…454g for $3.80 at asian grocer
