3 months warranty, might be better off with eastdigital's 3 years on refurbs

    • +2

I think they're down to 1 year now.
      Still better.

      • +2

Still showing 3 years warranty on their shopify store lol

        • +1

          Sorry yep; pulls vs refurbs.

Pulls used to be 3 years too, thats down to 1.

      • +3

ED's pulls are 1 year warranty (used to be 3 years), while FR are 3 years.

    • Link?

    • Used hdd is posted as a deal…

what a world we live in nowadays

Mine came full of data.. pulled from a RAID config by the look of it.. but bit strange they didn't clear them..

    • Yikes

Hope there was no sensitive data on it

      • -2

Hope there was no sensitive data on it

        why?
it is not his/her sensitive data… so don't need to hope

        • +2

Idgaf because it's someone else's data that got leaked because companies didn't practise due diligence.

          What a mentality.

            @krisspy:

Idgaf because it's someone else's data that got leaked because companies didn't practise due diligence.

and why is that his concern…
if he don't want it then send it back
or if he does then he can wipe it..
and if he is interested he can look through the hdd (which is likely to be boring corporate data which is of no use to most ppl)

These are REUSED hdd from corporations being resold to consumers..
so you can expect that some hdd might not have been wiped properly.. it's not a big SURPRISED if it happens.
            so who gives a shit,
you are overly concern for some corporate hdd is stupid

AND If you are so concern for some unknown corporation then email them and let then know yourself.

You're too optimistic on the practices of recycling companies.

Though if it's from a RAID, at least you know it's not off a mining operation haha

      • Is hdd mining even a thing any more? I mean I understand it's POSSIBLE but is it viable?

        • These drives were manufactured in that era. There's chance.

      • +1

you know it's not off a mining operation haha

        Rio Tinto?

      • A mining operation is the best case scenario when buying a second hand disk - a disk full of chia means the disk was written to once and has very few reads.

        • Warm backups are better since they are also one write a few reads (for checksum) but usually live in a way better environment, like a proper server room. Mining drives are not always like that. Many even living in the original anti static bags they come with for years.

    $17.45 per TB

Or $17.01 per TB with eBay plus

I ordered this last week and arrived yesterday packaging was terrible..

No static bags, just wrapped both hdds in bubble wrap and thrown in a box, didn't even use sticky tape on the bubble wrap.. Wtf

    • Fulfilled by Amazon?

      /s

      • I bought one of these a few weeks ago.

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/225949802201

It was packaged really well, in a sealed static bag, in a proper shaped foam filled box.

        • Thats becase au_2023 is East Digital :)

          • @MasterScythe: Is this accurate that au_2023 is ED? If so, I'll buy it from their eBay instead of shopify since it still states a 3-year warranty.

  • Is something like this ok in a Reolink NVR or really should stick with a purple?

Any specials on 10tb or larger drives people have seen?

    • Should be fine, but not from this seller and not from Amazon unless you like dealing with shoddy packaging and cushioning for your drives. East Digital is good.

It's nice to have a robust returns policy, but it's even better when you don't need it.

I've got 5 of these HC550s and they're built for 24/7 operation in data centers.

There is some advantage to NVR-specific drives in that their bios is tuned specifically for constant writes, but I'd be surprised if you notice a difference. Enterprise class drives like this will fill the role no problem.

The only caution I'd keep in mind is that data centre drives are not quiet. HC550s are quiet compared to other data centre drives, but they still make noise when writing. I wouldn't want them in my quiet living area, but in a study behind a closed door is fine. I don't know how the sound compares to a purple drive. I've also added some vibration dampening to mine (stick on foam sliders from Kmart), but that's because of my NAS case design.

    • This was in 2016 but i had a new 6TB purple die within 6months of being in a NVR. Was a seller on ebay and he replaced the item.

  • +2

Price jacked up $349 to $359 before discount

  • For those that have these at home, how would you rate the noise level? WD consumer drives were always relatively quiet, but do they care about such things with commercial drives?
