Sleeping Duck SD Mach II Mattress Sale - e.g. King $1999 (was $2599) + Free Firmness Adjustments & Free Delivery @ Sleeping Duck

220

Firstly to the deal, I just noticed the prices have dropped on these mattresses. I actually am not sure what the drop is on anything but the King, as that is what I bought, which is now over $500 cheaper. But I also see that they now don't charge for firmness adjustments on all mattresses so maybe that's it.

Single: $999

King Single: $1,099

Double: $1,349

Queen: $1,649

King: $1,999 (was $2,599)

Super King: $2,699

Been hunting for a new mattress for ages and honestly hate the whole confusing mattress shopping process. Never wanted to spend so much on these things, especially a mattress in a box, but with overwhelmingly positive reviews wherever I looked from Ozbargain to Bedbuyer to Product Review, (which initially just put me off it looked so fake), I gave Sleeping Duck a go and got the SD Mach II for just over $2,500 (king size), a few months ago. Turned up the next day.

What actually impressed me was how you can unzip everything, the covers to wash them and the layers above the springs. My thought was when it does eventually sag, and I'm sure it will, given springs are still good, I could buy new layers cut to size and place them back in. I could even change the material if I wish (foam, latex, etc).

The other thing is you can swap firmness layers for free. Started with medium (too soft), quick online chat and they sent out a firm layer. Pretty much perfect. But tested extra firm anyway, too hard. But now we’ve got spare layers (thin mattresses) for camping or kids' sleepovers. Extra firm makes a solid yoga mat too.

I don't get why unzippable layers and covers aren't standard on expensive mattresses.

Also they're doing EOFY bundles, which maybe more related to a deal for some, including 1. mattress + bed frame, 2. bedding kit, or 3. discounts on multiple mattress buys. https://www.sleepingduck.com/au/eofy/

I get that this doesn't appear as a deal for some, coming from a $100 Kmart mattress and before that a Sealy Posturepedic 30 times that, both lasted as long as each other, but with this price drop, it might be worth a look. If you're over the usual mattress buying BS, I'd honestly recommend giving this a go for the 100-night trial, free firmness swaps and the ability to change out the top layers.

Unrelated gloat: I used my old trusty Coles credit card that refunded me the difference with the new price drop, anyone still got one of these with the price protection?

I've been meaning to buy a new mattress, so thanks for taking the time to research and sharing. I can see that you have been researching since April too.

You're also an old bugger, so I trust ya, gramps.

    • Thanks sonny. I had a look at the IKEA one too which wasn't too bad - nearly bought that. But they only allowed mattress swap not refund.

    • Grandpas never lie.

Must just be the king thats discounted as iv been looking at the queen for around a year and its always been 1649

    • Did it include free firmness swaps as this was an extra add on (eg. King was $1999 without it when I bought)?

      • believe so (and i think they would always do that as an alternative to a return)

    • /yeah same. Queen has been 1649 for over a year at least while I was eyeing a deal. firmness swap has been standard across the range for a while

  • I've got one, definitely worth the investment

  • I had also did months of research and won't believe productreviews.com site as the positives ones were incentived by the seller. I went to Atlantis Sleep and still on trial. Been a month or so now. The firmness can be swapped too, but you cannot wash the cover. What I like about it is that it is freshly made and not in the box. And it is made in Aussie plus some components made from recycled ocean plastic bottle material.

Does anyone knows if we request a different feel foam, do we need to return the existing one ?

  • Good deal. Bought King mattress at $1,899 four years ago - with $100 referral discount. No complaints or issue so far.

    • Ah forgot I got a $50 referral discount on mine too so my King was actually $2,599. Cheers.

For those on a more 'tightly orientated budget', but would still like the quality of a mattress like this.
(And they are good. We've had a couple of other high-end leading brand mattresses in the past and another of the boxed roll up foam brands that we sent back after the trial period that we didn't like.)
…We picked up a King size SD mkII for $600 from The Salvos.
If you're lucky enough to find one, these are the mattresses that have been returned during the trial period.
And I know some may start to cringe a little here, but they are thoroughly cleaned and sanitised using commercial agents before being donated.

My personal opinion of this brand (and I was in the industry for a little while some years ago), they are sensational. They are quite comfortable for varying sleeper types; not much partner disturbance; and they don't sleep too hot (a typical complaint with some PU foams and latex).

Ever slept in a hotel room or an Airbnb? More people have used those any of those mattresses than something you find at Salvos.

      • And again… "thoroughly cleaned and sanitised using commercial agents…"
That's not by Salvos, that's from Sleeping Duck before they ship them out again.

Does anyone know how they compare to Sealy Posturepedic (specifically the Exquisite line). Hard to make a decision when they don't have any physical stores.

    • Family member has the Exquisite queen. Firm but comfy top - similar to firm on SD. Edge support on the Sealy is much more rigid and strong (doesn't sag when you sit on the edge) unlike the SD which sags a little. But oddly I found it harder to get out of bed with the Sealy as it had little flex. But overcome with a base which is lower to the ground.

    • Sealy bed has a traditional springs which means your partner can feel the movement when you are moving around. Whilst with pocket springs, minimal disruption.

  • That's a good price for a modular queen mattress! I was in the market a bit over a year ago and got a mattress from Ausbeds. The model I got is similarly priced to the SD Mach II, before their sale. My model has more foam layers than SD, so the firmness has more adjustment options. I like a firm mattress, but even the super-firm was too much; landed with the 'firmer'. Worth checking out if you're in the market. YMMV.

You can actually fit two firmness layers on top of each other as well (in the king at least)
We found a combo of hard on the bottom + medium on top to be way better than a single layer.

    • I heard someone else doing this too. Did you still keep the antigravity layer? I found the anti gravity layer too soft and heard others get rid of it altogether.

      • +1

        Yep
        Top down goes
        Antigravity layer
        Medium
        Firm

Couldn't stand how thin just the single comfort layer was coming from a previous ozmatress spoilt us a bit

        • Ah thanks. Will give it a try. Even if it doesn't work for me, I think they did well in allowing us to easily play around with the toppers.

  • How can one tell when their mattress is ready to be replaced? My trusty Ozmattress Supra is now 10 years old, and it still looks brand new - and has no noticeable issues. But also see that it's recommended to change every 6-10 years??

    • +3

If no issues no need to replace. Don’t listen to the people selling mattresses telling you that you need a new one!

  • Buy Serta Mattress, you won't regret it.

been using SD, Sealy and Serta… I found Serta is worth of investment for quality and comfort.

  • I picked up a near new Koala mattress on Marketplace for $150, Washed the external cover and its like new

  • I've always been a little wary about these type of mattresses due to heat retention. Do users find it an issue? Not currently in the market for a new mattress but am interested in what actual users think. I trust ozbargain reviews over productreview.com.au any day!

I slept on a similar-style mattress at an Airbnb in New York and loved it, but that was only for a few days. I'd like to hear the actual thoughts of day-in-day-out users on back support, heat retention, partner disturbance etc.

Only if you have time and can be bothered though…

I'm a relatively "hot" sleeper (just ask my wife nudge nudge wink wink) and have found the SD fine for temp regulation and barely notice her getting in/out of bed. I have a dodgy lower back, rocking firm and all good.

    • I've had the original SD mattress for 6 years now. I still absolutely love it. Friend had a Koala that lost support within a couple of years.

I typically run hot and do not find heat a problem with the mattress. For some context, I am on the shorter/smaller side (170cm, 80kg).

Bigger factor causing heat is the rest of the stuff on the bed - different materials for the sheets, doona and pillows have more impact on heat retention than the mattress. Same goes for the fill of the doona and pillows. In this cold-ass weather I run an electric blanket beneath a lighter doona on top. Allows for breathability without getting too cold.

Back support - no complaints, I haven't had history of back issues or anything but YMMV.

Partner disturbance - hasn't been a problem, the topper foam is split too so you can have different firmness if you like.

Swear I'm not a shill, just honestly impressed at quality of this mattress. 0 regrets, would buy again.

    • I’ve got this mattress recently and do find it a bit too hot. And I am currently considering returning it.
I’m not really sure what could be causing it and still scratching my head trying to figure it out

Do you know if there is anything specific to these types of box mattresses that are different to the ones you can buy in store?

    • I have this mattress. Bought it during winter and never found it running hot during the colder months

But in summer it's a whole other story, when I personally find it run quite hot (but not my partner!)

I would love any tips or hacks for keeping cool with this mattress!

      • Thats the same with me, im considering returning it.
but unsure what i should be looking at instead.

Do you have any idea what makes this bed run hot for you?
Im suspecting it might be the material they use on top

It's a shame that SD don't have bed bases with storage. Otherwise I'd be much more curious.

FWIW I don't quite understand the obsession with it being an indestructible bed base. Like, are you smashing that hard or that obese you're breaking the bed? I genuinely am curious as to what the purpose of it is above say a pine wood.

    • All the Rob Van Dam fans practising their Five Star Frog Splash.

Same. It's not since the student dive days that I've had to ever think about a bedframe not being sturdy. What are people using as bed frames- shipping pallets?

  • Assume they still do this - call/email and ask for the other version of the firmness to trial - and you'll get another set of the foam pads which you can play with. Thats if you have the storage space for the extra foam. Awesome mattress - had it for 4 years and cant fault it.

  • I bought one of these in a King and after some experience wouldn't do it again.

I think it'll work for many people, but I would have gone something less "one size fits all".

The SD and all the other big box companies seem to rely on a standard spring base and adjust by changing the top foam layers. And SD uses a really, really firm spring base and the adjusts for lighter or normal weight people by using softer foam. I may as well be sleeping on the foam layers on a plank of wood, skipping the crazy heavy spring base altogether.

My concern is that because the spring base is so hard, that I'm going to wear down the foam in short order then need to find replacements.

My previous mattresses were expensive Simmons ones. I could tell the spring base was much more responsive to my lighter weight. And they lasted 15 years.

I recently dropped in to an Ausbeds showroom (the owner used to post on Ozbargain) and had a look. I unzipped a load of mattresses and compared the insides. They were latex (longer lasting than open celled foam) and the spring based had at least 3 different spring weights.

On the plus side, SD were good to deal with. Happy to send out different foam layers to try, fast. Part of the business model. But I wouldn't do a mattress in a box company again.

  • Bought my daughter a king single and my son a queen mattress from Sleeping Duck. They've had no complaints and the mattress is going well. We try to rotate one a month but sometimes forget. Hopefully this time next year I'll get this King mattress for the missus and I once we've got a couple of extra gold coins saved up.

    • For me, rather than rotate the bed, I rotate where I sleep. Saving your back to lift the bed, especially king size one. And of course, turn the foam upside down too.

      • My partner helps me turn it, so no dramas. But I've also done them in my own, takes a tad longer but still no dramas.

  • I like the idea of the Indestruct Bed and can see the logic in paying $2.5k for a king baker with headboard considering the extra beam in middle, the metal and the wood. I've been looking at this for a while.
I'm not fully sold on a bed in a box mattress for $2k though, It seems pricey and comparable to what you would expect to pay in store for a mattress that isn't a box mattress. I've been using a cheap eliving Deep Dream Premium Mattress (about $500 at the time) for 3 years and this has sagged now and is no longer comfortable. Loved it when I first got it.
Not sure how the SD mattress would realistically compare - appreciate that the foam on top is accessible and replaceable at least.
I've got a flimsy pine bed also from eliving, was hoping to replace this and see if the issue was isolated to the bed or whether it was mattress also.
