amazon all time low on the 4 port. https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B077PTN771
both 900 joules protection.

but if you have access to TGG commercial looks like this is still going (I think): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/864437

4 Port (BSV400au2M) $24

8 Port (BSV804au2M) $44.90

personally I have the 4 port, and I don't like that it's curved on the bottom corners. if you even step on it by accident a tiny bit, the entire powerboard has a habit of turning on it's side. I imagine this only affects the "single row" models but I find it annoying.

positive part is the cord is 2m long and on the thickerside.

Can confirm TGG Commercial 8 Outlet $39

    • ok thanks. don't have access so it's a non starter deal for me.

if you even step on it by accident a tiny bit

Why are you putting the board in a location where it could be stepped on by accident? I imagine it could also be a tripping hazard too then, presumably with the plugs and cables in the same location to be tripped over.

    • it's not really in a place where you will step on it every time. I usually tuck it just under the side of the bed but occasionally the end sticks out a bit because I haven't pushed it back under all the way after plugging/unplugging.

the cord goes under the bed to the corner outlet so is not able to be tripped on (95% of the powerboard+cord is all hidden under the bed). maybe I should have explained it better but I can just step on the very end (the narrow end opposite where the cord is attached) that's poking out from under the bed, and stepping on that area by accident with your toe on like 1cm of the power board is enough to cause it to flip on it's side sometimes. because of the curved long sides on the bottom.

      • Just Mount it to the underside of the bed with double sided sticky tape and two long zip ties. Problem solved!
You can hoover there properly and it'll help with cable management too.

        • Just Mount it to the underside of the bed with double sided sticky tape and two long zip ties.

you mean facing down? that would be a bit tricky when I need to plug something because I can't see the plugs.

I don't have an actual bed frame, well I sleep with mattress on the steel base with legs which is meant to go in the bed frame (don't have the actual bed frame) so actually I could do what you said and attach it with double sided tape and zip ties to the side of the steel frame. that would work.

but it means the chargers which I leave plugged will stick out pretty far. it could work towards the top of the bed where it won't get in the way.. I have to think about it.
the tipping over powerboard is not like a major issue, just annoying. happened today when I bumped it with my foot didn't even step on it this time.

    • FWP 😂

  • Clamping time, clamping voltage and joule rating are everything with sure protectors.

    • maybe you are looking more for something like this?

      • 1800 Joules is actually quite reasonable - not a bad choice!
Clamping time and clamping voltage must also be understood

Bought two of these 4-port ones in a past deal. I love the feel of the switch, that’s a nice touch, but otherwise the thing is so unnecessarily bulky. I felt that even just using it at home, but I’m shocked to see it described as for “travel”! Definitely would pick something smaller with that use in mind.

    • I love the feel of the switch,

I never use it. just plug, unplug while leaving it on. I haven't had any issues after 1+ years.

but I’m shocked to see it described as for “travel”! Definitely would pick something smaller with that use in mind.

sounds like the usual amazon description/title error. I have never heard of a "travel" friendly power board.

travel is also usually used to describe overseas travel. like travel adapter kit for USB charger. nobody is taking a power board with AU plug overseas. 😂

      • Ours are set up in home offices that double as bedrooms, the sleepers wanted all the office equipment LEDs off and so we wanted a board with a switch so we’d have more control.

It actually ended up that we had more than 4 ports needed and some equipment that should be always on like the router and device chargers so I bought this one with two separate 4-gang switched circuits in the one board. Mounted them on the underside of the desk. Works well!

        • and so we wanted a board with a switch so we’d have more control.

ok makes more sense in that situation.

mine just lives under the bed with a bunch of USB chargers plugged into it.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Mate, there is a better solution for that if all you're doing is charging.
Simply get a multi port charger and stick it under the bed. Or better, to the side of your bed side table.
Something like this anker for example. If you're just charging devices, you really don't need the 'protection' that this offers.
Lots of ideas if only for charging. You can have a little charging drawer with this device mounted to the rear of the drawer, out of sight, with a small hole with all the cables coming through it.

            • @Lord Ra: I also plug/unplug the vacuum occasionally and other charging bricks.

also I have apple 30W, two 65W GaN chargers which I got for under $30 each after stacked discount (amazon credit incl etc).
it was cheaper to have a powerboard than buy a expensive multi port charger. 💁‍♀️

Have few of these at home. Overall okay. A flat plug would be ideal.

  • The 6 port without USB for $33 seems ok too? Isn’t too large a profile too.

The units with USB are so excessively long though. Wish they’d sort the layout of these boards out though in general. They take up a ton of space but there’s no AC Ports that have good distancing for larger power bricks, either. Really inefficient use of the space they occupy. Either make the whole thing smaller, or use the size to space the outlets more. As noted above, a flat plug would be better too.

In the end they feel well made, but pretty poorly designed, if that makes sense.

  • These are the most ODDLY designed power boards.

    • yeah they are bulkier and with curved edges at the bottom (why?).

I guess I fell for the marketing "protected device warranty" when it had a price drop over a year ago. I mean it's fine it's reliable which is what matters.

but I have those HPM basic ones (with less joules I think) with squared design and also lower profile so even if I bump into it and accidentally step on the end it stays facing up.

      • They also don't support larger power bricks. The HPM 12 outlet is probably the best I've found to cater for all different shapes and sizes. Using one now and it's perfect for my needs. The black one can be had for $46.50 @ Bunnings: https://www.bunnings.com.au/hpm-black-12-outlet-general-purp…

        • I have a HPM 4 port, which has two wide spaced plugs with squares drawn around them. and two regular spaced plugs.

          definitely useful sometimes.

the 8 port Belkin with the plugs back to back would be a nightmare, probably use 4 sockets up with just one large power brick.

I'm guessing the rounded bottom edges make the Belkin feel more premium. at least I did get that impression when I took it out of the box for the first time. sharper squared edges might make the design feel cheaper.

  • Is the Xiaomi better? Although it has only 3 ports, but it comes with 2 USB-A and 1 USB-C. They have a discount right now using a $10 coupon.

Side note - I'm not sure if coupon is targeted.

  • Is the Thor Alpha 7 a better product ?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/912045
    https://www.thortechnologies.com.au/product/thor-alpha-a7/

It claims high MJ, and 1ns clamping protection.

    • Probably,
But I prefer the Belkin for things like Christmas lights as it also has a switch on the board for easy turn all on or off, when the PowerPoint is behind the tree.
If surge protection is reason for high value products I'd probably go for the thor.

  • Has anyone tried the Belkin SurgePro 6-Outlet Surge Protector with Dual USB-C? $55 on TGG commercial. Or $61 for the 8 outlet. More expensive but it's not chunky.
