Team, I have a friend who is traveling to Uganda for 1 week (work trip) and has kindly advised he can help set up locally restricted deals. I’m exploring cheaper regional subscriptions/services that I could potentially take advantage of. I’m thinking things/services that would traditionally require:
- a Ugandan mobile number (temporary access); and/or
- Local or international payment method (e.g. Wise card, prepaid debit)
Some immediate thoughts that come to mind:
YouTube Premium Family Plan: I currently pay over AUD$20/month for Mexico. Is the Ugandan version cheaper? If so:
- Can it be activated with a Ugandan SIM + Wise/prepaid card?
- Any pitfalls or traps (e.g. needing VPN after setup, region locks)? Can I simply vpn over to Uganda (or simply ask my friend to log in remotely from Uganda) and have them set up the service? Can we change payment details once its set up to an Australian debit or credit card?
Other Deals:- are there any other region-locked offers (streaming, software, apps) are worth setting up via Uganda? Examples:
- Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft 365, Spotify
- Any Ugandan-specific bargains (e.g. gaming, cloud storage)?
Requirements:
- Must be activatable within 1 week.
- Minimal ongoing dependencies (e.g. no recurring local card top-ups - preference is to set up in Uganda then return to traditional/local payment methods.
Appreciate any tips, step-by-step guides, or warnings, Thanks!
I like your extreme penny pinching style. Do you ask other friends who travel other places this too?
