Buying a scooter/motorcycle

Uh… I think that this topic belongs here as it is a means of transport between point A and B.
And so I would like to ask… What kind of payments do I have to make in order to maintain a scooter or motorcycle? And can anyone give me estimate figures of the costs?

The costs that I know of are:
* License
* Rego
* Scooter/Motorcycle
* Insurance
* Fuel

Anything else?
Thanks :)

    License Check the Internet for your state.
    Rego probably the same site as above mine is about $200 a year
    Motorcycle depends on what you want, Do you have a motorbike licence?
    Insurance depends on too many variables, ie age, no claim bonus etc etc
    Fuel Depends on too many variables but for about $15 I was getting 200kms on a 250cc and about 350kms on a 110cc postie bike. (which is a great bike)

    The postie bikes are available at auctions all the time, They can be picked up for about $800. They are bulletproof.

  • I just hope you don live in QLD. Rego cost me about $420 and its only a 250 single cylinder! Such a rip!!

    If you are after a scooter anything under 50cc you can ride with a car licence but they are useless as usually have a max speed of 60-70km/h

    I wouldn't buy anything less than 250cc other wise you will get sick of it. I have a full licence but went for the 250 for cheapness kinda wish I didn't but its still an awesome bike (wr250x) guess I'm used to riding a 600cc ninja tho :/

    • Yeah rego down here in mexico is $400 something as well for a 250. Stupidly expensive!

  • Postie bikes lack power and are dangerous unless all you are planning to do is pootle along the footpaths at walking speed. Please buy a real motorcycle or scooter - you do need to have the power to accelerate out of trouble if you need to.

    Having said that, another cost you haven't mentioned is protective gear. You haven't included this in your list above - but it is definitely not a place to scrimp and save. Your gear needs to protect you in case of accident as well as protect you from the elements,and you should buy the highest quality you can afford - and this is a significant cost.

    Finally, you also haven't mentioned servicing and maintenance costs which you will need to allow for - unless you are mechanically minded and cando it yourself.

    • Really sorry for my… delay?
      And thanks for the input from everyone.

      The rego is about $200,
      the licence is like $150 in total?
      The insurance… not sure about.
      Fuel is a reasonable price, so I am not too worried on that front.

      Also, protective gear is something I completely forgot about.
      That itself can cost a fair bit too @.@

      Anyways, I've decided to delay the motorbike/scooter until later.
      Thanks again for the input and really sorry for my delay of 2months!

    • I think you are been a bit unfair on postie bikes. I get to 80 easy and have hit 95km(6foot and 93kg) and I beat most cars off at the lights. The 110 cc engine has been described as the most reliable engine ever made. It's very easy to service yourself. Lots of helpful websites on them. It's very easy on fuel. Because of the engine size its only $120 for rego up here. Also with the addition of a milk crate you have a good amount of storage place. I have done 10000km in the last 18 months and I know I could sell it tomorrow for what I paid. I just can't believe everyone didn't have one
