Aus Post Not Delivering to Terrace Houses with Gates and Visible Yard, Due to Dogs?

TL;DR: Looking for a sanity check. With all the media about auspost and dog attacks, including carrying dog spray, could Auspost be having a new policy on shut gates that goes a bit far?

Had a "we missed you" from Auspost today while I was home.

Photo of attempted delivery is of a terrace house fence. Could be mine, but it looks like one up the road near where the parking starts.

Seemed a bit off because our posties have been great the last couple years. Maybe a new guy?

Felt conflicted, but decided to raise it by live chat. Maybe new guy is doing this a lot and no one else is speaking up. Maybe it's nothing.

Rep says they might have got the house number confused by accident.

I replied all the houses are clearly marked.

Rep says something like they might not have checked closely for the house number, as posties don't have to deliver to houses with shut gates, where they can't tell if there are dogs.

I replied, these are terrace houses where the front yards are all clearly visible, and yeah, no dogs (more below). Gates freely swing at hip level, and rest shut.

Bit of back and forth, but they didn't want to consider the difference a terrace house gate with a fully visible yard makes. My guess is they have a script to run, which is a bit annoying. Not their fault.

Thought I'd ask here for a sanity check given we get lots of packages delivered. With all the media stuff about posties and dogs, someone here probably knows more than me.

My view is that, while I sympathise with posties, and if they can see a dog they absolutely shouldn't assume it's safe, nothing has stopped the thousands of every other delivery on the street. My house accounting for the majority of them I'm sure. I feel a bit like they might have seen the gate, decided not worth checking for dogs even well enough to check for the house number, and took it to the post office instead.

There are more factors to the story that probably make auspost look better:

  1. Next door's tradies doing a renovation have a dog that sits and minds the tools and front door. There's a big fence between our front paths. Maybe the postie driving past spotted the dog and confused the houses?

  2. I have a dog too that's never out the front. Is it possible auspost has access to registration records of dogs and drivers have houses marked - maybe then a zero tolerance policy on shut gates? Just a thought I guess.

  3. post shop is really close, and likely parcel will be there within an hour. Along with the rain, maybe postie made a solid risk/reward decision, and I'm being a dick by blowing up the risk part.

Anyway, I'm going to use a rope to tie my gate open on delivery days. It's a bit annoying because there's been some front yard thefts lately and I imagine the gate is like a 1% deterrent.

What are your thoughts? Noticed any other changes related to dogs and auspost?

Considering the LPO is close as you say, is it easier just to use a free parcel locker? If I didn’t have someone at my work warehouse to sign for packages I’d be using parcel lockers for sure after I got hit by a porch pirate 2 weeks ago.

My suspicion would be postie running behind and don’t want to be done on not hitting delivery KPI or whatever.

Flip side, if I was a delivery person I would not be risking my ass if I even suspect a real danger within the delivery area.

I will however support your right to be outraged though irrespective of what actually may have happened.

    • I appreciate that and the fear of porch pirates.

It's odd to on the one hand not be happy with something auspost is doing, but on the other hand deeply impressed by how much they have improved.

Meanwhile my sister got a phone delivered, was meant to be signature on delivery, and the post person left it on top of her letterbox

Can you just leave the gate open? It's not locked anyway.

    • Yeah that's my solution for now. I'll just use some rope. I'm just a little worried about porch pirates lately, though I doubt the gate was making a big difference anyway.

They have adopted a very strong policy on risks around dogs, so the rules around risk will be solid. Can't blame them. F/wits with their dead head Amstaffs etc.
APost were below average to start with, so this is par for the course, but this time it's justified. As opposed to the subpar work ethic/work culture, prior.

    • Yes I should I emphasized just how much they have improved the last couple years. Pre-covid it was pretty tragic. I really like the introduction of photos for attempted deliveries for instance.

    I think you're over-thinking it.

  • Postie doing right: Beware of the dogs!

  • One missed delivery. One! One single one!!!!!!

And you are whinging to us. What do you expect us to do about, lend you the OzTARDIS to go back and tap the postie on the shoulder and tell him to deliver it to the right house?

I've had my things delivered to another house in the street. The image showed it was next door, because while that neighbour has no number on their mailbox, it is distinctive. And doesn't have a lock. I had someone else's mail delivered to me just this week. I just went out and when the postie came back down the street I ambushed him and gave it back to him.

    Posties make mistakes.

If yours keeps doing it, get back to us.

    • Well it's way more than one, but point taken.

Really getting the photo triggered this whole situation, and I really appreciate the improvements like getting that photo at all.

Just wondering about their dog policies with it being all over the media - just guessing based on what the rep said that the policies may be stricter still.

I'm glad we both have awesome posties.

      • How did you get the photo? Do they use a polaroid? My postie and I aren't Facebook pals.

If you have the auspost app it tracks your packages, which is nice, but also you can click on delivered ones and it has a photo for attempted delivery. New feature this year I think.

Not sure when I got an auspost account, but I was already getting sms and email telling me delivery details.

Our postie pats our 'dog' (it's a shitzu pomeranian something or other that FIL no longer wanted to look after)

Put something like a Ring doorbell on the gate or letterbox, clearly marked with your address with a large enough sign under it. Problem solved.

    • That's a good idea too. That way I won't have to keep the gate open all the time,

The batteries on them last ages and there's probably a secure enough mounting method. If your wifi reaches your gate then it shouldn't have any issues. Doesn't have to be Ring, the cloud recording subscription for Ring is very expensive so I'm sure there's better options than Ring out there. It's convenient though, could be worth paying. I'd rather buy into a cheaper system though.

In my younger years I used to work as a postman. I was never afraid of dogs. But I did get bitten 4 times.
