OzBargain User Scripts - User Tags & Markdown Toolbar

I created a couple of user scripts for some stuff that have been requested for in the past.

OzBargain User Tags & Votes

A script that allows the addition of customisable tags to OzBargain users and track cumulative votes against them. To use it just click on the tag icon next to each user name.
You may recognise this feature from the Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES) since it pretty much does the same thing.

  • Tag your favourite or least favourite users on Ozbargain with your choice of name and colours
  • Track total votes against users whenever you vote on their comments and deals
  • Tag and Vote data is only stored locally, Export/Import data to manually backup and transfer to other devices (automated syncing of data not currently possible)

Want to find the most impactful users in our community to tag? Check out the monthly Members Awards and Transparency Reports
Unfortunately it is not cross-compatible with ChoiceCheapies as the UserIDs used for tracking are only unique to each site. Happy to create a separate version for Cheapies if there is demand for it though.

OzBargain Markdown Toolbar

A script that displays simple markdown formatting buttons above all submission/comment textboxes on Ozbargain as well as ChoiceCheapies.

It covers almost everything you can do with Markdown along with some extra QoL features:

  • Automated formatting & checks for intricacies that can break markdown like spaces and line breaks
  • Directly quoting from selected text anywhere on the page plus a special button when selecting text in the main post
  • Keyboard shortcuts for nearly every action plus the Preview button

This is probably overkill for the average user but I hope power users, professionals, and 2 character usernames find this useful.

If you've never installed a user script before you will need to first install a script manager extension for your browser like Violentmonkey or Tampermonkey then visit the above links again to install. Some mobile browsers like Firefox, Edge and Safari are supported.

Feel free to also check out my other scripts/styles: Dark Mode Classic & UI Tweaks which I made sure was compatible with these scripts

lol I don’t even need a script extension to remember you for life as the kogan faulty bidet YouTube guy

    • I dont spend much time on pc ozbargain (98% browsing is on phone for ozbargain) - but this system is BLOODY AWESOME - thanks mate, this is exactly the functionality I wanted / ozbargain needs !

      • would also be cool if there was a preset functionality -

eg set up tag for 'simpsons fan' , with a chosen colour combo, that i can just apply to say, 20 accounts

I use this and other scripts fine on my Android phone with Firefox.
The presets idea is interesting but would need a bit of work

        • Nah I been using it all day today as finally had an all office day - it’s good as is thank you again!

Adding to the Blocked Commenters list is better…. Comment hidden.

Update: ZOMG! This is a life saver. took me a while to work out how it worked, but I have been tagging people ever since. I can now ban users from my feed and put a note to remind me exactly why they are 86'd.

Only issue I have is that I cant give this thread an upvote.

Thanks for making this. Such a useful tool that I am surprised it isnt a standard site feature.

  • Great stuff!

  • Thanks for the markdown toolbar. That's pretty cool. Still no idea how people add graphical emoji into their posts tho :(

    • They are just standard unicode emoji that you can copy into text from elsewhere.
I had considered adding it to the toolbar but that may have unintended consequences for the site…😰

      • 😰

Thanks for the tip, that works for me. By unintended consequences, do you mean there will be more emoji than text?

        • Yeh, it could drastically change the site etc. but maybe I'm wrong.

Windows 10/11 = Windows key and . (period) or Windows key and ; (semicolon).
