Edit - also a 5-camera system for $300 here (https://www.amazon.com.au/Introducing-Blink-Outdoor-Wireless…) - thanks to jrt2020 for mentioning it.

Part of the July Prime Day sale stuff. Not sure how long it will be on sale for.

I got some of these in the last (identically priced) sale in Nov 2024.
Waterproofness has worked out well in the recent Sydney weather. Certainly better than the non-waterproof versions that I got back in the pre-Amazon days :-)

App is a bit slower than Reolink, but we are talking seconds, not minutes.
Sync module needs to be able to access the WiFi network and each camera needs to be able to access the Sync module. Doesn't work well if you have a large house/block of land.
I find them very good for my particular use-case. YMMV.

  • 5 pack is also $300
    Is it not better ?

    • I don't see a 5-pack on that listing. Do you have a link?

You don't have to have the subscription (I don't).
Without it you still get to see live view and I think clips are kept for 30 days (or some similar number - I don't recall exactly, but it's plenty of time to download something if you want).
There are also some other features that come with the subscription, but I found that I didn't think them worthwhile paying for - and I don't feel like I am missing out by not having them :-)

    eww 2 AA batteries

    • AA beats the crap out of hardwired lithium. Easily replaceable Eneloops are better at sitting outside in the sun than Lipo packs.

  • Is the battery life legit?
They claim 2 years with two AA batteries, whattttt?

    • +1

Unlikely to last that long (haven't had this current version long enough to tell) as that would be some sort of "ideal situation". But they do last longer than you might expect.

The original Blinks that I got over a decade ago on Kickstarter (prior to Amazon buying them out) would certainly go 6+ months easily. They were used as front door cameras so would trigger each day at least a couple of times.

  • Does it work well with home assistant?

  • Would be great if Google Nest has something similar with local storage.

  • So each unit comes with a sync module? Can I run multiple sync units?

What sort of range can I expect

    • You need one sync module to run x cameras.
I have 3 cameras for a single sync module. I'm not sure what the maximum is, but it would be at least 5 given that you can buy a kit with 5 cameras and a sync module.
I initially placed the sync module about 8 meters inside the house (putting it with the other comms stuff) but one of the cameras that was on the outside and up high was only just connecting to it with 1 bar, so I decided to relocate the sync module towards the front of the house and everything has full bars now.

      • Does it come with a sync module or do you have to buy it on top of the cameras?

        • +1

Mine did previously, and the current listing says this:
"No monthly fees required when using local video storage functionality with the Sync Module 2 (included)".
It's also advertised as a "system" instead of just a camera add-on.

So whilst nothing is 100%, I would be pretty comfortable that a Sync module is included in the kit.
And you could always return it to Amazon if you felt it wasn't right for you.

The “up to two years” battery life is achievable only under very light, default usage conditions. In real-world, active use—especially with frequent motion events, higher sensitivity, or longer video clips—expect significantly shorter battery life, sometimes as little as a few weeks (Thanks AI)

person detection is paywalled behind a subscription model. ew brother, ew

    • +1

It still detects stuff and saves the videos for your own review - it's just that it detects "all" things (based on the sensitivity setting you set) and doesn't omit "non-people" detections.

For me, that isn't a problem as the amount of non-people detections are quite minor in my setup. I have it blocking areas that are public and that would pick up cars, the postie etc. So it only detects things that come inside my property boundary.
So far, the only non-people it has detected were a swarm of bugs that hovered around for a few minutes and some heavy driving rain.

I did also use the free trial of the paywalled stuff and found a number of people that were detected (deliveries etc) but weren't identified as part of the "person detection" system.
On that basis I was always going to have it detect everything anyway and not rely on it to distinguish between people and non-people detections. So I didn't care that "person detection" was paywalled :-)

  • Looks like those Tapo solar cameras that come on sale for similar price is the better option based on all of this?

AA batteries seems a strange idea - I guess the benefit of this is that it can just get 'plonked' anywhere easily?

  • Can you use this as a car / caravan camera ?

    • +2

You could, but it would be a bit frustrating.

On the plus side, it is easy to mount and easy to access.

On the negative side, the live view times out after a few seconds, so you have to constantly hit "Continue" to keep the image on your screen.
But the main negative is the hardware setup. You need a Sync Module (included with the kits) that allows the cameras to connect with your Wifi network of choice - there is no direct connection between phone and camera.
This is fine for a location with always on power and WiFi available (a home or business for example), but for a mobile location like a caravan you would need: a hotspot (eg, your phone) and have the Sync module powered and set up to connect to your phone wirelessly. Your phone must constantly be available to provide internet connection to the Sync module, and you can't lose power to the Sync module otherwise it needs to take a minute or two to restart and connect again with your phone and the cameras.

All up, there are much easier ways of providing a camera in a car/caravan :-)

    • Down to under $40 per camera with today 25% cashback. Good deal. However, without a subscription, the app is very limited with no shows the thumbnails of those clip, and I have to check one by one, and it's a nightmare. The alarm and notification still work well. Mines are now like alarm sensors with backup footages that I can check later.

Still tempting to get another pack at this price …
