UN Tech on eBay – Poor Customer Service

I've always thought of UN Tech as a reputable seller of refurbished gear but this recent experience during the eBay EOFY sales has definitely changed my opinion.

Bought this Apple iPad 9th Gen 64GB Wifi: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/266981374104
It was advertised as “Excellent Refurbished Condition”, but arrived with scratches and wear. When I messaged them, they admitted they sent a “Good” condition one instead, and asked me to return it for the correct one.

After literally telling me I’ve advised the team to send it out today no worries. I’ll keep you posted., they backtracked and said it's not available anymore - yet the same iPad is still listed on their store — just at a higher price.

Looks like a classic bait-and-switch — refuse to honour the discounted price, then relist at full price. Potential breach of Australian Consumer Law (misleading and deceptive conduct).

Have sent an email to sales@untech.com.au as that's the only email I could find and will update the post if they do ship out the replacement iPad.

    • Didn't really want to comment on this but

We treat any incorrect condition issues as "item not as described", and in such cases, we’re always happy to offer a replacement.

In this particular instance, we issued a refund based on the buyer’s previous history to ensure a smooth resolution.

No bait and switch here as listed price is still the same

From the name, I'd have thought the opposite

For me, I will just take the refund. They are telling you ALL their "excellent" conditions iPads are not perfect to meet your expectation. Even the outside conditions are great, the batteries can be a few years old as well with hundreds of charging cycles.

We are on 11th Gen iPad now with 2x the storage (128GB), a much faster processor, brand new battery and minimum 2year Apple ACL warranty. All for $200 more!

      Either way, still misleading advertising!

    They've offered you are refund.

They are not required to send you another device.

Yes, they are. Or they shouldn’t be selling the same iPad at a higher price.

      • Yes, they are.

        Not really…

They can sell whatever they want at whatever prices. A refund is sufficient to close this matter.

      • You should demand for brand new iPad instead.

        • Demand something that was never offered in the first place?

@eccaz: Only for a professional Karen.

  • Do they sell blue helmets and get of jail free cards?

I’ve been on eBay for over 2 decades. My advice for buying anything, but especially phones/tablets/laptops, is NEVER buy from an eBay store, you pay a higher price for an inferior product compared to what you will get from an individual seller.

You get the convenience of a Buy It Now listing, free postage and a 3/6/12 months warranty, but the premium paid isn’t worth it. You effectively get a 1 month warranty through eBay on every purchase, so give your item a good road test within that period and assess whether you want to keep it.

A seller’s “refurbished” units are often ex-commercial, trade-in or even possibly warranty jobs, their grading of quality is extremely unreliable, they often don’t bother posting photos of the actual unit you’ll receive so they can’t be held accountable and hope you’ll just accept it.

    • You effectively get a 1 month warranty through eBay on every purchase

      Depends on the store…

      • No it doesn’t, eBay has a 30 day money back guarantee on every purchase as far as I’m aware.

        • Some stores offer more than 30 days.

          • @jv: My post was encouraging the buyer to purchase from individuals rather than stores and to take advantage of the 30 day warranty.

It is irrelevant that stores may offer longer warranties, especially when I’m warning the buyer against them.

            • @eccaz:

especially when I’m warning the buyer against them.

              They're not all bad.

              • @jv: And I said that you get better value from individual sellers.

        • Is PayPal still offering 180 day buyer protection for SNAD and INR?

Pretty much. No one has special prices to give you a good deal, they just have junk that they hope works for long enough to pass any ebay dispute periods. It's always faulty/returned/repaired or some other dodgy grey import.

And all these companies reviews/feedback shows the truth but people don't read it..

I would not buy refurbished tech from any store.
i trust a perosnal seller more than a shop whos selling it at volume

    • I would not buy refurbished tech from any store.

I've been doing it forever and never had a problem that wasn't quickly resolved.

  • if you want my opinion darksith.

don't buy any refurb apple wear that's not from apple refurbished australia directly.

someone working for one of these told me. they just buy used phones cheap (often seen as these "send in your device for a discount" on store pages).
they don't do anything to them. no tests no checking. sometimes they don't even wipe the screen. they put it into a good condition original packaging, then they just sell it for 3x 4x the price that was paid for it.

this includes refurbs from anywhere, ebay, amazon. don't do it just horror stories.

    No breach of ACL.

As long as you receive a refund, they've met any legal requirements and neutralise any allegation for bait and switch.

The reality is, they cannot provide you with the advertised product for the advertised price.

They are allowed to claim "mistake", withdraw it from sale and price accordingly.

Regardless of whether their mistake was with their description or their price, by providing you with a full refund, they have met their legal obligations for the purposes of electronic contracts.

Bro just take the refund if they're offering it instead of making things worse for yourself by getting another second rate junk item.. they're doing you a favour.
