+1 for your sense of belonging contribution, decent deal tho

Make sure you click as much pictures as you can.

They are the worst rental. Made me pay 1300$ for pre existing scratch. I didn’t click pictures before because I was in hurry and also I am dumb to do that. Worst experience ever!!!

I agree! The lady jacked up her car to inspect the damage at the bottom. She was aware of the existing damage and asked me to pay for it. I reported the issue to their head office, filed a credit card dispute, and received a refund.

They are the worst, because you are dumb?
Never had a problem with SIXT, myself. Thanks OP.

    • +1

But you also write down the pre existing damage. Or you report it. You never go "oh they must know about that scratch! It'll be fine".

      • +1

I made a mistake by trusting them mate. :(

I had to pickup around 8:30 AM when it was raining. Pretty sure, the scratches were not visible in the rain then I had to reach to the office by 9. So, I was in rush to leave.

I consider myself unlucky because I had an accident and this was replacement from insurance. I had to pay for access to the insurance and damages to rental. Bad Luck!!!

    • Did you take up the premium insurance options?

just commenting because i've had exclusively very good experiences with sixt. given one of the other comments, i'm guessing that the experience is dependent on which location (franchise?) you deal with… but yeah. very good times booking with them, no issues, good cars, nice people, competitive price.

    • +2

Agreed - have booked with a few Sixt locations and every experience has been good.

    • +2

Tend to agree that its location dependant.

I had great experience with SIXT in Sydney and Queenstown (both seemed ok with scratches/dents from normal wear-and-tear, like driving on the highway or through the mountains).

Portugal branch went hard on the upsell and made we wait around at drop off spending way too much time looking for even the smallest dent or scratch before giving me to 'OK to leave'. I felt like they were looking for any reason to charge me for normal wear-and-tear.

The car I picked up had a broken sun-visor, which wasn't obvious until I used it about 4 hours after picking up the car.

Rang Sixt customer service and was told to take the car pack to the branch so it can be assessed.

I then had to drive all the way back to pick-up location, only to be told by the branch people that they already knew about it. Geez, would be courteous to let me know about the damage when I picked up the car!!!

  • ive been an accidental customer because my insurance offers car rental cover whenever my car is in repair (due to accident). in the two times ive rented with them its always a pleasant experience. i go to the centre (richmond) pick my car, take pictures, and drive off. after i get my car back, i return the rental, take pictures and give back the key. i do get rental car excess cover on the side(from another provider), just in case but thankfully havent had the chance to claim on it.

i think they (car rental industry in general, not just sixt) notice if the customer is careful enough to take pics. my in laws were here maybe two years ago and they had to rent a people mover (via euro something, cant remember the name of the shop). 1) they took out insurance (from the same company) 2) they didnt take pics (thinking the insurance should cover them). when they returned the car, all nicks and scratches were blamed on them and they ended coughing up a few thousand dollars to cover excess. the company even tried to deny they had insurance to jack up the price further. good thing my partner was there dispute, considering my in-laws' language barrier.

I take pictures too, but also use rentalcover.com for an odd ~$100 or so get full coverage for 1-2 week hire

  • Would need good rates to make up for the god awful ads I get every second video on YouTube.

  • +2

Never had an issue with Sixt, normally my go-to.

Use my CC for excess insurance and take a heap of photos beforehand with timestamp on. and a quick video around the car to highlight anything major.

  • Recently used them at their Melbourne airport location and was great. Booked the mystery car 2dr sports coupe option (or similar) and I guess the as similar was a Mitsi Eclipse Cross… haha. suited me fine though so no problems but she had her hands on the Merc key for awhile before she handed the Mitsi keys over.
She also told me to take photos prior to leaving the site and to keep the photos until after drop-off so they tell you the steps needed to avoid future potential conflict.

Not had a good run with Sixt - out of three rentals I've had with them (all at Adelaide Airport), they got one right.

First one: booked Camry for an overnight stay after coming back from overseas (had a lot of luggage so wanted a good sized car). Got a Corolla Sedan, was told "it's the same size car" which it decidedly is not. Were they lying or poorly trained? You decide. Car also wasn't properly cleaned as I found a cigarette lighter in it. Complained on the post rental survey, got a call as I was heading into a meeting and asked for either an email or a call back in an hour (both of which I'm waiting for to this day 18 months later). I did see a $20 credit from them on my credit card statement so clearly they did something, they just didn't feel the need to communicate it.

Second one: Booked an iX3 for an overnight stay. Actually got an iX3! The vehicle behaved and was fun to drive. I was happy!

Third one: Thinking the first rental was just a fluke, booked an iX3 again for a trip with my mother for a week as a nice surprise for her (and because I had fun driving it the last time). Car had numerous dings that weren't on the notes - fortunately was not penalised for these and their solution to reporting it was "oh just take a photo and show us when you return it" - they need to do what Hertz and Avis do and let you upload your own photos. Then, the charging fob didn't work - which is a Problem when they prominently marketed the car as having free charging. I called Chargefox who were as helpful as they could be but ultimately said that Sixt had to resolve it. Could not get in contact with the Adelaide Airport branch at all, in the end had to wait for the next day to call head office who managed to find someone at the Adelaide Airport branch who could answer a phone, who said that I needed to pay for charging and they'd reimburse me. I insisted upon getting this in writing - good thing too because they failed to reimburse me until I chased up Head Office yet again.

On the other hand, I've rented through Budget\Avis and Hertz at Adelaide Airport, and Hertz in the CBD, never had a problem with them. (Plus, Hertz don't seem to have MGs in their fleet so double bonus.)

Ive had issues with thrifty (now sixt) at Adelaide airport as well, and agree it was the only sixt/thrifty I've ever had issues with

Used them once, first car wouldn't start there so they gave me another one, which took me home but wouldn't start the next day. I called them and they sent an RAA repairer and charged me for it, stating even their highest insurance doesn't cover a flat battery. I have my own RAA which I would have used had I known they would make me pay. Still bitter about it two years later!

I also booked a Tesla from the Melbourne Airport branch. It was our first time hiring a car, so we took some time to photograph the existing damages. However, we noticed even more once we got the car out into the sunlight. We weren’t sure what to do at that point and could only hope for a smooth retur.

When we brought the car back, the staff member at the return area simply asked if everything was okay and did a quick walkaround. He didn’t give us any trouble.

Overall, it was a very good experience.

  • Das ist good?

  • Do they have cars as big as trucks?

gave us an unserviced car, which had an oil leak. Engine light came on saying needed engine oil immediately… we were in rural italy on a saturday. C/S was useless. We finally found one and paid - was told we'd get reimbursed, never did - they stopped replying to emails. Car had other issues as well which we were told we would get reimbursed for time never did. had to do a credit card chargeback for a portion of the rental. Will never go with SIXT again.

  • Never had good service from them. The last time I hired a "Rav4 Hybrid or Similar", I received a NA Hyundai Kona

  • If looking for a discount internationally - the RACV/ NRMA (up to 20%) deal may offer the same pricing vs. this one which is restricted to Australia.
