Obligatory "Does this need a subscription?" question. I need to get rid of Ring.

    • +2

Doesn't seem to. TP-Link usually operate on the model of everything can be saved to an SD card with cloud storage being a paid upgrade. That's how it works on my TP-Link security camera and the marketing materials seem to imply its the same here

    • Copy/pasted from the TP Link website:
Flexible Storage Choice: Save recorded videos on the hub-installed microSD card§ (up to 512 GB) or by using Tapo Care cloud storage services.

    • +2

Looks like the cloud subscription is optional.
You can just record motion detection events onto a MicroSD Card in the Chime/Hub Unit kept indoors (which means no cloud subs).

    • +5

Can confirm subscription is optional. Have mine with an SD card working great.

      • +1

Can you see the content of the SD card (e.g. using some app on your phone)?

Also, without the subscription, when someone rings the bell, do you get notification on your phone if you are not at home?

        • +3

Haven't plugged the SD card into a computer. But can go back through the old alerts on the phone and view and save them.

Yes, re not at home without a subscription

        • Yes you can

    • +4

It doesn't. Has SD card and live view in a good app. I use mine wihtout a subscrption and have found no missing needs or gaps in functionality. YMMV.

      • +2

If its anything like all the other tp-link/TAPO devices, the only thing missing that i would like that needs a sub is the lack of rich notifications.
In other words you need a sub for it to show you a thumbnail picture in the notification, otherwise you need to open and view inside of app

  • Changed my system from Ring to Tapo. I bought both outdoor camera and doorbell, C410 camera won't send notification to hub. Waiting for software update.

  • I've had one of these for over a year now and love it.

But recently when the doorbell is rung the huv keeps ringing for about 30 seconds. I've confirmed the settings that it's set to 5 seconds but still no difference.

Has anyone else has this problem?

    • +14

Yes I had the same issue. You need to change the settings in 2 places: Tapo Hub settings > Ringtone and also Doorbell settings > Doorbell > Paired Chimes >Tapo Hub > Duration.

      • Same issue….

I've switched it to 10 seconds but still rings for much longer

      • +1

        You legend.

Thanks so much for that . Worked a treat

    • Mine does exactly the same thing.

  • +1

People with iOS does the function where doorbell activation ring your phone still? That’s prob my main annoyance with eufy (easy to miss notifications since I have so many spam ones)

    • +2

Yes you can turn the feature on or off in Doorbell settings > Doorbell > Doorbell Video Call

  • +1

Get this and the H500 hub

    • I don't think it's out / available yet.

    • Is this one of the best hubs?

    • worth upgrading the H200 to the H500?

      • I have just set mine up. I have not played with it enough however on paper it is a simple solution for those on Tapo ecosystem with bonus matter support

I moved over from Synology. Their surveillance licenses are expensive. Now I can have more than 2 cameras which is great

    • I got really excited when I saw the screen with 4 live views only to realise it doesn't come with it

      • +1

I gotna couple of old ipads so that was easy

    • What does the Hub do? I have a heap of Tapo cameras and just use the app?

      • Record to local storages inside the house. I dont like the idea of having SD card in outdoor cameras. Also others have reported that AI detection seems to be more accurate

  • Want a deal on 235 heard its better…?

    • The D235 is better - not that this is a bad doorbell. Tempted to hold out for a deal on it.

180 degree view instead of 160, larger battery, more types of AI notifications etc.

      • +2

        230 can't be hardwired like the 235

        • +1

The 230 does have some advantages, like a removable/swappable battery and the microSD card being in the hub rather than the doorbell. Bit of a tricky one.

          • @Marrk: Fair enough; for me I felt I'd be dealing with batteries more than someone stealing the doorbell and losing evidence or needing to access the microsd

          • +1

@Marrk: Actually, remembered why I mainly went with the 235: continuous recording (which requires hardwiring)

            • @shodan: That’s a tempting feature, I don’t have the existing wiring though/not sure I could justify the cost of an electrician.

              • +1

@Marrk: It can be powered by a power supply from Jaycar (which is where I got mine; the 235 doesn't come with a power supply) and it's been working fine. Granted I still got it installed by a sparkie but if you have a power point near by (which I didn't) and can do the drilling and fixing yourself I think you can do it yourself: don't have to do anything fancy to wire up the leads from the power supply

  • +1

    Battery charges via micro USB

    • Fortunately for some, the charging cable is supplied.

  • Is this better thank Reolink door bell?

  • Has anyone found a solution to secure these doorbells in unsecured locations like a front gate? Other brands seem to have brackets or covers you can screw into the wall.

    • This has a bracket that can be screwed to the wall or gate.
I screwed mine to the security door instead of wall.

      • It does but the body attaches to that bracket and is easily removed with a pin. Would be easy enough to make a metal brace that fits around the body and screws into a gate/wall.

      • can you post a pic?

  • i want one of these but i dont want it to be a doorbell, im one of those people that hates answering the front door, like gen z dont like answering mobile phone calls.

  • -1

The only downside is that the chime is wired which means it has to sit next to the modem/router, I wish it was wireless.

    • +1

You could have a long ethernet cable?

In the settings mine seems to indicate it can be wireless? I have it plugged in though, but there an option to setup a wifi connection.

  • Once you tweak it, it’s a great doorbell .. way clearer then our 1080p one we had

  • I have given up on video door bell. I had one and found it useless in the end, many people are uncomfortable to be on camera; some delivery guys or postmen, when they see the camera, they rather knock at the door than pressing the button. I have seen people blocking the camera when at the front door. So no more video door bell for me.

    • +2

This one is motion activated so it'll capture them even if they don't press the doorbell and before they can cover it

  • Will this make a noise on the outside like Ring when pressed, or is there a setting where the sound is only made from the chime itself? Conscious of noise to neighbours.

    • +2

You can turn it off or lower the volume independently

  • I got myself a Unifi Doorbell - different models connect either by Wi-Fi or PoE.
Whilst it is subscription free, there is additional hardware required so startup entry price may be higher. (if not already using their other compatible products)
When someone presses the doorbell, (depends on the permitted time schedule) it comes through to my phone as a phone call. It even rings when i'm away from home. (VPN not required for this)
I played around with the settings to make sure I also get notified if it records movement, such as a courier delivering a package without ringing the doorbell. (I unfortunately also get notified for birds and at dusk - car headlights)
There are some quirks though, so not for the non-tech savvy.

  • Why is the newer model on Amazon cheaper?

    • Link please

      • I don't know how to get the link from the Amazon app but it appears on the page - "View newer model" and it's $127

        • +1

          Beware descriptions on Amazon.

          I can see this:
There is a newer model of this item:
TP-Link Tapo Smart Battery Video Doorbell, Home Security System, 2K, 160° FOV, Flexible, Head-to-Toe,Two-Way Video, AI Detection, Color Night Vision,Ring Call,Anti-Theft Alarm,Local Storage(Tapo D210)
TP-Link Tapo Smart Battery Video Doorbell, Home Security System, 2K, 160° FOV, Flexible, Head-to-Toe,Two-Way Video, AI Detection, Color Night Vision,Ring Call,Anti-Theft Alarm,Local Storage(Tapo D210)
          $97.00

but that IS NOT a newer model of the same thing, it's a budget specced model from Tapo, possibly released after the higher specced D230S1.

Model differences can be found here: https://community.tp-link.com/us/smart-home/forum/topic/6842…

    • No hub?

  • -1

If you are used to seeing thumbnail notification with your other doorbells like ring, then you will be disappointed with this.
    No rich notification.

    • No rich notifications unless you subscribe, that’s the only downside.

      • -1

yes, I am used to rich notification and will go with Eufy.

Down to $123 now on prime https://amzn.asia/d/fiGIweT

    • Knew I should have waited for Prime Day…

      • Just buy another and return them full price one

    • This is the International version. Better would be to ask Bunnings for a price beat.

      • +1

You think it's been trumpified desib?
It's the same model from the same store (TP-Link=Tapo), made in China.

TheUnderdog's price - $113.47 with $10 Prime Savings voucher (pays for your monthly Prime sub if you don't have it) - is a 13% saving over the current Az Au offering.

Snap it up if you're considering this brand because you probably won't see a better offer for a looong time. I paid ~$120 with OW price beat about 12 months ago.

        • @igaf what is that $10 prime saving voucher? the NAB10 CARD10 ?

          • @McMaferMur: Gone MMM.

Seems Tapo/TP-Link noticed the error between US and Au prices and theUnderdog's link now points to the Au site. The USA product is now markled as "undeliverable to your address". The voucher was a code automatically applied once you ticked the box - also no longer showing on the USA site.

    • @theUnderdog: $113 with Prime coupon. Great price, nice work

    • This is sold by Amazon US, right? So hub comes with US 110v power brick, if I'm not mistaken. Could someone please confirm?

  • YMMV but I've found this to be a nightmare of an experience, specifically getting the Doorbell to connect to the Hub. I got it to work once but after a few hours, when I tired viewing the camera, it wasn't displaying anything. Restarted etc, didn't help. Decided to reset up and was back on the "Connecting to Hub" issue once again.

Others have the same issue apparently. Very frustrating.

    • https://www.tapo.com/en/faq/719/ might help

Iirc during my initial setup I had to move my phone closer to the hub and press the doorbell button again to get it to go solid green(?). Has worked perfectly since although I had to reboot the hub after a major internet outage a while back.

      • Thanks.

I literally had the hub, doorbell and phone right in front of me during the setup attempts. The issue isn't with the hub as far as I can tell since my Tapo C210 security cameras can see and are connected to the Hub, using it as the storage medium.

I've disabled 5GHz wifi and turned off 802.11ax mode, just in case, all to no avail.
