2yo kids should not be playing games on phones.

    • +1

Controlled screen time it's fine. Same goes for TV screen time etc. Balance it's needed.

      • Controlled screen time it's fine

No it’s not. Most child psychologists disagree with that.

        • +6

Most psychologists and major health organizations agree that children under 2 years old should have little to no screen time (except for video chatting), and that children aged 2 to 5 years should be limited to no more than one hour per day of high-quality programming, ideally co-viewed with an adult. This consensus is reflected in guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and echoed by many child psychologists and developmental experts.

Key points from the expert consensus:

Under 2 years old: Screen time should be strictly limited or avoided, except for video calls with family and friends.

Ages 2–5: Up to one hour per day of high-quality, age-appropriate programming is considered acceptable, especially if an adult is present to interact with the child about the content.

          Concerns and Risks:

Developmental risks: Excessive screen time in very young children is linked to attention difficulties, delayed language development, poorer cognitive and social outcomes, and behavioral issues such as anxiety and aggression.

Replacement of essential activities: Screen time can displace important activities like physical play, social interaction, and sleep, all of which are crucial for healthy development.

Quality matters: The impact of screen time depends not just on duration, but also on content quality and context. Educational and interactive content, especially when co-viewed with an adult, is less problematic than passive or inappropriate programming.

          Areas of Disagreement or Debate:

Absolute zero vs. minimal exposure: While most guidelines recommend no screen time under age 2, some experts and organizations (notably in the UK and France) call for even stricter limits, with French medical authorities recently advocating for no screens under age 3 and only occasional, supervised use between ages 3 and 6.

Evidence strength: Some researchers note that while the association between excessive screen time and negative outcomes is strong, the evidence for moderate, high-quality screen use being harmful is less clear, especially if it’s not replacing other critical activities.

Summary Table: Major Guidelines for Screen Time in Young Children

          Age Group AAP/WHO Recommendation Rationale/Notes
Under 2 years No screen time (except video chat) Brain development relies on real-world interactions
          2–5 years ≤ 1 hour/day, high-quality content Co-viewing and discussion recommended
In conclusion: There is broad agreement among psychologists and health organizations that screen time for children as young as 2 should be limited to no more than an hour per day, and that the content should be high quality and ideally shared with an adult. There is little disagreement on this point among mainstream experts, though some advocate for even stricter limits, especially for children under 3
