AT A GLANCE
The Mercury Jacket is a great insulation piece made with recycled nylon main fabric and filled with 600 loft duck down.
Product Description
The Mercury is a warm insulation layer that's ideal in a range of environments. It's made with a recycled nylon outer with a water repellent finish and filled with 600 loft duck down.

Soft elastic binding on the cuffs hood and hem trap heat against your body. A regular fit ensures you can fit layers underneath, and the inside pocket transforms into a small stuff sack for easy packing.

Equally ideal at the campsite, on the road, and in the hut.

The main and lining fabrics are bluesign® approved, which means they were manufactured with the responsible use of resources. This product contains RDS down certified by CU 1210688. The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) (independently) certifies down and feathers against animal welfare requirements and tracks it from farm to final product.

All Macpac down is independently certified to the RDS.

    • Which will make me warmer?
      Thanks

  • Good deal for Tombliboos…

  • The material feels like wearing a garbage bag.

  • Not ideal for proper camping, but Uniqlo's jacket is 750 fill @$99. No hoodie though. Just a thought.

    • link please ?

    • didn't see any of that price at all, imo it's not possible or at least not widely available.

otherwiae plz post it as a deal im sure lots of ppl will thank you.

    • Macpac uber light 650 duck down

    • +1

That's incorrect. Higher fill power doesn't magically make it ideal for compaing! You still need to consider the fill weight.

      Macpac Mercury has 600 fill and it's 154g, hence the warmth index is 600 × 154 = 92,400
      Uniqlo Ultra Light Down has 750 fill but it's 65g, so 750 × 65 = 48,750

Macpac has ~90% more insulation value than the Uniqlo jacket.

      • Yes. That's true to a degree. Bear in mind, however. Insulation varies based on stitching, outer material, inner material, and whether there is a hood or not in the Uniqlo. So this isn't exactly accurate. But close to the truth. Uniqlo is perfect for pretty much all Australian winter layering IMHO. But it wouldn't be good for camping .
Think Uniqlo - 5-15 degrees. Macpac 0-5 degrees and obviously above this.

  • Is this better than the Halo?

    • looks to me the same. 600 down 80/20.

    • +9

It seems like a lighter version of the Halo. Macpac is great because not only do they tell you what down is used, but also how much is used to fill the jacket (you can see the details in the product specifications).

Mercury/Halo Fill Type: 80/20 Duck Down
      Mercury/Halo Fill Power: 600 loft

However, the Fill Weight is different:
      Mercury: 148g (Size M)
      Halo: 205g
      Halo (hooded): 219g
Meaning more duck down is used in the Halo jackets, and less in the Mercury.
So if you are after pure warmth (but the jacket will be heavier and puffier), then Halo hooded is best, followed by Halo, and last Mercury.
Source: Macpac website, but also I have the halo hooded and normal, and I can tell that the Hooded is puffier and warmer (which led me to check this in the first place).

Hooded only has more fill because of the hood itself is more space to fill, its no more dense than the non hooded.

  • Thanks for the great post. Looks like Black/Balsam Green is sold out.
