Come and Get It, Peter Russell Clarke TV Show

Many people will remember the TV Show 'Come and Get It' with Peter Russell Clarke.

It used to air weekdays, and must have been on shortly after (or during) kids programming, around 5pm or so, as the theme music and show seems to be familiar with many who were still at school at the time…. and I know I wasn't seeking healthy food tv shows at that time in my life.

It's a shame that tv shows like this seem to be lost to history. I would like to see the 5 minute show slipped in between programming, or if this is not possible, have the full run of episodes put up on ABC IView.

From the reports on Peter Russell Clarks recent passing, it seems that no one really knows how many episodes were produced. Around 900 they report. Hopefully they still exist in an archive at the ABC somewhere and have not been disposed of.

If there is enough good feedback here (I think more than 100 positive responses in this thread), I will make contact with the ABC to see if making these available for viewing again is a possibility and then report back here.

Anyone remember the TV advert he did for butter, with the mechanical cow being used to represent margarine? I saw Peter turn up in a beer tv show about 15 years ago - it was nice to see him still going back then.

@Nugs: That's what I want. Why does he post so many comments that add no value?

        • Ah you're one of those title-only readers.

In case it isn't in archives, here's proof he had a great sense of humour. Vale ya cheesy geezer.

    • All PRC outtakes should carry a profanity warning. That guy could make Gordon Ramsey blush.

There was a much funnier blooper reel which has been deleted from Youtube.

But here is a clip of some of the audio from it (playing over video footage of Keven Rudd):

      • Love it. Australian edam, ya copper Northern Territory!

I used to love that show, even as a kid. My hubby and I were going through the bookshelf at a holiday rental a few years ago and were chuffed to find his cookbook from the show. Some truly revolting-looking recipes, but it gave us about an hour of laughs going through it. I'd love to watch the show again.

I've had the theme music running through my head all day since hearing the news. I thought it came on a bit later, say around 6.55pm after The Goodies but before the news? Whenever it was, I watched it most nights.

Was it Fast Forward or a Working Dog show that used to take the piss (pun intended) out of him? I remember that a lot more than the actual show.

  • You should see the ABC archives…it's a cold storage vault with rows and rows of material. Its nuts.
They are cataloguing it though with a database and digitising it but you can imagine its a lifetime job as they've got over 100 years of material across tv and radio.

Maybe they'll find Countdown, Doctor Who, and The Goodies

      • Goodies…. goody, goody, yum, yum…

Likely will also find Count Duckula, The Trapdoor, Monkey, and Alvin and the Chipmunks there as well.

There are so many shows lost to time due to poor archival.

Would love to see what can be salvaged put on ABC iview or Youtube.

Yes, I am one who occasionally lives in the past. Had good memories of those days gone.

Not if it was a Crawford Production. LOL

Poll should ask yes or no to watching it. 'again' is superfluous.

  • It's a shame that tv shows like this seem to be lost to history.

Why the need to go back?
To use the present to watch the past?

    Not for me.

    • Luckily we don't need a crystal ball to look to the future. Science has done the hard yards, on that. (Netflix not required.)
I like nostalgia, it reminds me of the better society we once were.Albeit that goodwill has become a unicorn.

      • the better society we once were

        Were we?
        Were we better?

        Different yes.
        Better? … not quite.

      • Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Bring back Bernard King and Margaret Fulton whilst you’re at it. And why not Joe the gadget man.

Did he also say to turn your bread upside down after buttering it because your tastebuds are on the top of your tongue? He was good and funny….

I don’t remember this show at all. Some old Aussie shows I do remember that I liked were, The Extraordinary, Fast Forward/Full Frontal, Bullpit!, Mother & Son, Water Rats, Blue Heelers, and Around the Twist. I remember Man O Man too, it wasn’t really for me, but hey there was F all choice back then so we just watched whatever was on.

    • If you didn't watch much of the kids programs on ABC during the 80s, you probably won't remember this show. It was a 5min cooking segment they stuck between other shows.

I liked it… just short enough to not drag out between shows, but long enough to teach us something of use.

  • I think this show was passive watching for many kids in the eighties. There must have been nothing else on other stations to change to, and there was probably another show for kids viewing queued up afterwards. At 5 minutes it would have worked as a filler as the ABC did not have any adverts back then (not even those promoting the ABC).

I recall on one episode Peter cooked something in the engine of a prime mover (some meal wrapped in foil??). Amazing the things we remember.

I have made some enquiries about getting this show accessible to the public again (iview would be great), but it seems this is not possible due to rights issues & ultimately cost. What I have learnt so far is that just to get access to one episode for private use, can cost hundreds of dollars.

The theme song itself, which could be the longest theme song for any show (on a theme song length : show length ratio), still requires separate payment for use.

So it is whatever can be found on Youtube and the internet for now, but happy for others with more experience with these things to delve further (maybe a retired ABC staff member with time on their hands?).
