This is from Amazon Germany by the way. If you buy this phone there's a very high chance it might get blocked by our telcos, although there is no way to tell unless you want to be the first to import it.

    • Updated, thanks !

    • +4

unrelated to the deal but how oz telecom did is absolutely stupid, coz it basically bans phones from oversea.

      • +5

pretty smart on their end, only phones they authorise as compatible (i.e. sell) are whitelisted.. Australian retail protectionism at it's finest

      • Has it actually been confirmed to have happened with newer released phone models though? When the IMEI ban wave started and reading the discussion comments wasn't it pretty much just older pre-2024 models rather than 100% of international imported?

        • +1

no i don't have confirmation, and do enlighten me if you have news on that.

but based on my understanding that they did phone whitelisting via imei number, they will have to update all the new imei, so it doesn't seem possible they update all 2024+ phone from oversea.

          • @Tyler Kwok:

            whitelisting via imei number

I mean that's only the case with optus, ⅓ of aus telcos. Apparently Telstra/Voda do blacklisting instead, which is why an older model like my F3 still works. And I recall comments in the 3G shutdown thread here or on whirlpool mentioning Optus revising their list for note 14 pro etc after it was initially blocked.

            • +1

@vawiyoci: oh really? I thought it was white list across all carriers. This would be good news.

Now we just need more use cases to gauge how widespread of the impact towards international phones. I hope they do fix that coz it's really impractical and stupid.

    • Really?? Do they just block it from the network? Do they do this for international visitors? This doesn’t seem legal or correct.

      • +1

I think there is a new standard that all telecos have to follow for emergency calls, like wifi calling and all that, and a lot of the overseas phones don't support that, so to protect themselves, they just block imported phones that don't support those features.

        • That doesn't make any sense, what about international students? They cant be expecting all new international students to buy a new phone to start university

          • +4

@ilikeblue: Lol you must live in a parallel universe mate…

          • @ilikeblue: The number of international students I see rocking the latest iPhone is ridiculous.

        • +1

Needs to support 4G emergency calling (ie with no SIM)

          • @bamzero: Yes this is the one I was trying to talk about. It's safer but it also doesn't make sense. They shouldn't force you to buy a specific phone if you don't care about your own wellbeing lol

            • @itsmoe: How did we ever survive at all without mobile phones …

              • @bamzero: I think it's a political play by Apple to maintain it's dominance in Australia, similar to what the US did to Huawei. They don't want the Chinese to eat away from their Apple.

      • There is supposed to be a 90 exemption available for tourists. Don't know exactly how that works

    • Model number is MZB0I9REU so it's the EU model. The same model which is sold in the UK for example https://www.harveynorman.co.uk/products/xiaomi-redmi-note-14…

So there's a 100% chance that it comes shipped with the global rom. This is not going to come with the Chinese rom or any other asian rom.

Also the specs from the global store claims that it supports all the bands used in Australia. This is likely to support LTE calling in Australia. You should have no troubles with using this phone in Australia.

      "4G: LTE FDD:1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/17/18/19/20/26/28/32/66
      4G: LTE TDD:38/40/41/42/48
      5G: n1/2/3/5/7/8/12/20/26/28/38/40/41/48/66/77/78"

Got the 13 from Singapore last year and weeks later JB Hi Fi sold it. Haven't had issues. I'd say you'd likely be fine as it will eventually get sold here. Been on Xiaomi phones for more than 10 years they are not some random brand. Will be great when the cars come out here.

    • As long as it is the Global Version with the Global version of the OS. Xiaomi sells a lot of phones that don't support a lot of the bands in Australia, people need to be careful which Xiaomi phones they are buy and also be aware of the risk.

      • -1

        Nup.

Xiaomi supports all the bands seeing as all the bands have standards. Namely Telstra has a whitelist of phones that'll work, thus the banning of phones that aren't sold by them.

Can also be OS dependent. I'm running resurrection remix on my POCO X3 NFC and I can't use the network. My POCO F1 on crdroid can. If I move my X3 to factory miui it would work again (assuming they haven't banned my imei)

        • It's got nothing to do with OS and everything to do with the IMEI

        • the x3 nfc doesn't use volte calling for emergency calling.

          • @AeymothSky: How do you know?

            • @Punkboy: i know cause there was a way to test, my relative has a pocoo x3 pro nfc but it's hit the bricks and bricked itself llol.

the poco f1 i can't say , but i owned it in the past just lost it somewhere but if it's similar to the f3 then i can see it working.

as the poco x series phones are like the budgetier version of the f series

              • @AeymothSky: Do you think poco x3 pro has E000?

              • @AeymothSky: I saw someone locally selling a x3 NFC with miui and specifically disclosed "works with the 3G shutdown".

Thus my use of a custom OS is the only reason (I see) why I can't connect to the network. Once I buy a new phone I'll change over go MIUI and use my second (probably not banned) sim slot

                • @Some Random Guy: Idisagree they seem disingenuous.
X3 nfc is blocked for all networks i believe.

it doesn't use lte when calling lte and falls back on 3g which won't work.

                • @Some Random Guy: custom OS shouldn't affect it at all.

                  • @AeymothSky: Y'all can say all you want!

Get yourself a cheap poco x3 NFC, connect to the Aussie network using miui, and then install resurrection remix and lmk how you go!

  • Exactly, the hardware needs to be there as well as the software, a lot the Chinese only phones don't have the hardware for it. You can check the bands on the listing.

But yeh it's a bit of risk either way.

    • +1

Model number is MZB0I9REU which is the Europe stock with the global rom. The stock which is sold in the UK too. This has all the bands used in Australia in the hardware.

This is not the China only stock so it's not a Chinese only phone. And it's more like the China rom disables certain bands even but it has support in the hardware. That's why they can cross flash a Xiaomi phone with the China rom to the global rom to get extra band support. It's the rom which disables the bands even when the hardware itself can do it.

It's not the Chinese model with the China rom with locked down bands. They are not going to put an asian rom on the Europe model.

Trust me. This phone supports all the Australian mobile bands.

It's written so on the global store page for the specs under Network and Connectivity.

      https://www.mi.com/global/product/redmi-note-14-pro-plus-5g/…

So yeah this not being the China or India model makes it a bit less risky than you think. But it's the Europe stock which you also get in stores at the UK. Global rom.

I'm guessing this would be exactly the same phone, software and hardware wise which would be sold in Australia if Xiaomi decides to start selling it here. Only thing different is the model number written on the box. It has exactly the same global rom with exactly the same hardware. As in it's exactly the same phone.

      • I'm not talking about this specific unit, I was saying in general, people need to be aware that there are Chinese only models on the same phone which are usually cheaper, so people should check the supported bands of any phone they are buying before they do.

The other thing is the ROM, if you are someone with a little bit of tech knowledge or curiosity, you can swap the ROM over yourself like I did but that is still a bit of a risk as you might brick your phone.

Either way, if you are noob with phones and tech and don't know what you are doing, just buy a phone in Australia and avoid any headaches.

  • Wont ship to my address in QLD

    • That's a shame must be one of those forbidden post codes according to Amazon which i think no one can even explain. It's any how sold out now. Shows as currently unavailable. Good luck to those who scored one.

For about 100 bucks more there are many sellers with .au domains selling this same phone guaranteeing it will work in Oz.
Also, it seems if you look at Aliexpress for it, buy it in USD & use cash rewards to get 4.5 percent back then its more or less the same price as this.
