OzBargain Heavy Computer Usage

Hi All,

When I open Ozbargain specifically, it's super laggy, runs up my laptop fans etc. It calms down after a minute or two but it's still slow and laggy. Pulls like 10% of my CPU.

It's only started relatively recently on Windows 10 + Chrome, and doesn't affect my Android device on Chrome.

Hope theres an easy fix with the site, I can't have it open as an active tab at the moment because it's crucifying my PC.

  • I've noticed the Live page is using more resources than it used to, haven't noticed any changes on the home page

    My guess, some ad.

      Likely the case.

OzBargain itself looks like 90's tech and shouldn't use too much CPU resources. The only thing that keeps on running that we have coded is maintaining the websocket across all the tabs to receive notifications.

Those programmatic ads however are black boxes and sometimes you pull out some badly coded ads that's taxing on the CPU.

Live page on the other hand should stay between 80MB - 100MB on Chrome for logged in users, as logged in users don't have a banner ad on that page.

    • This. The homepage is continuously looping new banner ads and some of those ads are even full videos (I saw one for prime day)
One good reason to turn ads off or use an adblocker.

I've been tempted to turn off ads when I've had them cover text or I'm bargaining in the wee hours of the morning (e.g now) and a blinding white one comes up, but would feel bad for scotty and team missing out on my fractions of a cent so I keep them on </3

I doubt it's OzBargain but more likely your browser or Windows install.

Firstly, try a different browser. It could also be time to ditch Chrome, it's a known system hog.

What CPU, RAM etc are in your laptop? How old is the device?

As an experiment I opened 12 OzBargain Front page tabs (I think I hit a DDOS block). If I refresh them Edge maxes out at 15% CPU usage and drops back down to 1-2% after loading.

    My specs:
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7500F
    RAM: 32 GB
    Windows 11 Pro 64 bit
    System is from 2024

It could also be time to ditch Chrome, it's a known system hog.

Chrome runs each tab, extension, and plugin as a separate process so that contributes to higher RAM usage, but that's just how Chromium-based browsers works in general (that includes Edge and Brave). It's not necessarily a bad thing, unless your system is really low-spec (less than 16GB)

You can press Shift + ESC shortcut on the keyboard to look at how much RAM and CPU usage each tab or and extension is taking up. Some extensions use more resource than others.

  • It's your web browser doing GPU acceleration. Turn if off. It looks like CPU because it's rendered on-board graphics.

And also delete Chrome. it is shit like that.

  • try brave and install ublock origin.
the internet will feel like something out of this world

    • +1

Brave has an ad blocker built in. Why would you need ublock orogin? Would it even allow it?

      • yeah works for me, both block different things

  • +12

    Chrome is for hubcaps

    • +3

i laughed way to hard to that

  • Safari shuts doesn't 90% of the time I open up Ozbargain forums or even just browse comments on bargains. It's completely bizarre. I don't experience that with any other website, and I use the internet quite a lot. Been happening for years.

    • Curious. I use multiple browsers but Safari is my general / default browser including for OzB, but I've never experienced it shut down due to OzB. Unsure if it matters that I'm on a 2020 M1 Mac?

      • I'm on a 2020 M1 Mac?

        Me too. Mac Mini.

no issues for me on the Brave browser.

  • I get that too sometimes. It usually happens when I put the computer to sleep while windows are open then wake it up

  • Try an aggressive ad blocker.

  • a browser plugin, I can’t use yahoo 7 site on edge.

idk about that but occasionally the website freezes during loading. when signed in as well.

so tried to post a deal that had been saved, I couldn't open the draft. just froze. couldn't go to homepage, couldn't sign out. had to close browser and come back later.

happens signed out as well on multiple browsers.

    • idk about that but occasionally the website freezes during loading. when signed in as well.

Same here, just occasionally / randomly. Then I get the verification window. I suspect it's traffic related to the website, at that time, and possibly bad actors and DDOS shit etc,in the background, with the websites automatic security kicking in.

      • Yes, we get a lot of DDOS and bots which causes load on the server. The site will slow and then automatically go in to 'under attack mode' and you will see the Cloudflare challenge, until the traffic/load is back to normal.

        • Thx

          • @Protractor: I never get the cludflare challenge/verification page fyi just freezes.

            • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: I'm sure if I waited a bit longer it was just reload and bypass the verification.

              • @Protractor: for me the page just stays on ozb. but gets stuck loading. can't browse to other pages on ozb just have to close tab/browser.

maybe if I waited longer it also might fix itself, but pretty sure I waited over 10 seconds and nothing happens.

funny enough if I try later it loads, but if I close tab/browser, and try got to ozb again straight away, it's still stuck. so yeah cbb waiting for it to fix so I just go do something else.

You've got to sign up for Ozbargain Platinum if you want those higher frame rates.

  • The barrage of advert ads shown on the right are the culprit.

  • I've had the same issues only recently with the Ozbargain website, sometimes the website won't even load, although the problem is intermittent. I'm using Windows 7 + Brave. It runs perfectly on Android + Brave though.

      Windows 7?

Hello? Someone from 2009 called and they want their computer back.

      • +1

        I miss XP

      • hey don't laugh I'm using an old PC too! (not that old though it has Win10 on it and supported at least)

used to use a gigantic old laptop and it was only Win7 compatible, so I can understand being stuck with that thing.

  • Exactly the same for me - using Windows Chrome. Seems to be okay on Edge, but I'm not using that shit. Even typing this comment was very painful, watching the ltters appear moments after I type them. It is OzBargain and maybe facebook that I notice this for, nothing else.

    • Edge is basically an improved version of Chrome, if you think Edge is shit then so is Chrome.

      • improved version of Chrome he says

        improvement of IE more like

        • Edge is Chrome with just security enhancements on it, it has no relationship to ie but shares codebase with Chrome.

          • @gromit: with just security enhancements he says

but ignores msn login, copilot and office integrations

            • @SpicyStew: just like chrome integrates all the google garbage and tracking. Neither are perfect, if you care about security and privacy you would not use either, but still Edge is at least faster and more secure than chrome.

              • @gromit: but one copies and relies on the other

                • @SpicyStew: yes they both copy and rely on chromium open source.

                  • @gromit: which is fundamentally a google product that ms couldn't develop

                    • @SpicyStew: you are nick picking, it was a google product which they open sourced. many browsers now base their source code off it including Brave Chrome and Edge. Brave would be the best for someone that cares about privacy, Edge second best and Chrome dead last.

chrome is basically in the position that IE used to be in, people use it because they don't know any better.

                      • @gromit: i'm unsure how you come to the conclusion edge is better than chrome when they couldn't even develop or control the fundamentals

the architects are always of higher status than builders

                        • @SpicyStew: quite easily, it is faster, uses less memory, has improved tab controls, improved privacy and security while having support for addins developed for chrome. So you get everything chrome has plus improvements. Similarly Brave has all the benefits of chrome plus a heap of improved privacy and security controls.

                          • -1

@gromit: but you said Edge is Chrome with just security enhancements

i hope it works well with your microsoft smartphone

                            • @SpicyStew: use whatever you want. enjoy your "enhanced IE". I guess as long as you are happy you don't need something better.

  • This happened to me and it was an ad blocker on chrome issue, fixed by removing the add on

every time a JV comment comes up on my screen, my PC dies a little inside.

  • Try deleting your browser cache too, in addition to all of the other suggestions

  • I don’t problems. Fakebook is really bad on sarfari

I use AdBlock and AdGuard - but yesterday for the first time I noticed a message under a YouTube display window 'we turned off your adblocker' or somesuch

How dare they … !?!?!? etc.

It's outrageous what these free service providers think they can do ! ;-)

    Thanks everyone.

I thought since it was a new issue and nothing had changed on my end that it was likely an OzB issue.

I've moved to Brave and OzB is now fine, but going back to chrome it still has heavy resource usage.

Gonna stick with Brave for now.
