Comedy icons John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd star in the outrageously funny musical comedy The Blues Brothers. After the release of Jake Blues (Belushi) from prison, he and brother Elwood (Aykroyd) take their blues band back on the road in an attempt to raise money for the orphanage where they were raised. Havoc ensues as the brothers seek redemption on their "mission from God." Directed by John Landis (National Lampoon's Animal House), the soul-stirring comedy classic features musical performances by blues legends Ray Charles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Cab Calloway. I always wondered, why does the "Bluesmobile" (1974 Dodge) in the movie looks so old and beat up when it was only 6 years old at the time this movie was made? https://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_2078-Dodge-Monaco-1974.html
I don't see 2019 model cars looking like that today…Police vehicles in the 70s were likely subjected to a wider range of driving conditions, including more frequent instances of high-speed pursuits, harsh weather conditions, and less well-maintained roads. This could have contributed to a greater level of visual wear.
Also, automotive paints and materials were not as advanced as they are today. The paints used were more susceptible to fading and chalking when exposed to the elements for extended periods.
The combination of exposure and less durable paint meant that the colors would gradually lose their vibrancy, becoming lighter and less saturated, giving them a "washed out" look.
Plus, exaggerating this also adds to the grimey industrial Chicago setting they set out in the opening scene.
It's not just the condition of the car that I'm talking about, but the design of the car, which looks outdated even in 1980?
I'd argue the common US cars of 1980 (buicks, fords and chevies) didn't age as well as the 1974 dodge personally.
Given this is a Universal published disc, there's a good chance the regular Blu-ray is region free as well.
