I'm no electrician but I recently went down the rabbit hole of finding a surge protector after losing several pricey electronic items in the Alfred cyclone.

This is what I ended up with, for $25 and had the highest surge ratings:

    https://www.umart.com.au/product/cyberpower-8-port-surge-pro… or https://amzn.asia/d/gJbDdqm (Amazon - $25 delivered).
    Surge Suppression ( Joules ) 2750 Max. Surge Current ( A ) 67500

Vs this deal Rated to withstand a power surge of up to 900 joules

I have 2 of these and have been fine but note there is some quite negative feedback on them

Interesting, my plug ends all fit snug without issues described

      • +9

poor quality control on these units. I had them tested by an electrician and none of the surge protection was working.

I would trust the Belkin powerboard over that one any day.

Also i have this exact same Belkin powerboard which i've been using for years without an issue.

        • a bit like those fake lumen ratings on cheap torches

    • +1

Low response time and clamping voltage are just as important as having high joules on the box, if not more so. These Belkins (and most in this price category) aren’t that great

      • +1

        What do you recommend then?

    • +1

bad reviews read on Amazon before buying this
      https://www.amazon.com.au/CyberPower-Overload-Protection-Fil…

my advice is to just get the Belkin

do you really need Surge Protection when you have a new power meter board/box with surge protection there?

    • This. Just have a decent one at the switch board and you’re good to go.

(If you have aerial or other cables like HFC and are pedantic then you need something else for these)

  • The newer version comes with Belkin’s 11-point safety system. Would you consider it an upgrade compared to the older one?

Looking at the size of that thing it probably doubles as a surfboard too.

    • Reminds me of a boogie board.

  • +3

I just use the cheap powerboards from kmart for $4 and don't have issues

    • You won't until there's a power surge. Then your equipment is a sure goner and you'll be crying over it thinking why did you cheap out. Those cheap powerbards offer no surge protection at all only overload protection. So you're playing roulette with your power equipment.

      • +3

Never had a power surge hit my electronics plugged in - that's what the fuses in the switchbox are for.

Is this country town thinking or something? (I grew up in stable city electrical grids)

        • +1

Not all electrical switchboxes in Australia have a built in surge protector. Many older homes don't have it in the switchbox. So a surge protector is needed.

By the way that fuse in the electrical switchbox which you're talking about only protects against an electrical short circuit. It doesn't protect against a power surge. If that switchbox which you're talking about only has a fuse then chances are there is no surge protector.

@hollykryten: Sorry but you state 'surge protector is needed' as if it's canonical.

It's not 'needed'. If it was then in my 35 years on Earth I'd have learnt that fact.

Who's connecting every single one of their appliances with an electrical board with a surge protector inside? Only tin-foil hat wearing people.

      • I don't get it either with this obsession with tiny little protected power boards. I'd consider something like a hefty ups if I had gear like expensive servers, but most power boards have enough protection for maybe a gentle sneeze.

      • Hasnt happened yet in over 30 years of me using powerboards constantly and never to anyone I know. Certainly possible, but meh, not even worth worrying about..

    • +1

Came here to see this. I never understood why we need anything more fancy than the Coles/Woolies/Kmart $5-10 power boards that all come with an overloading protection.

      • +2

Because of marketing and groupthink. Seems like the idea of surge protection was added as a marketing tickbox, and then everyone picked up on it and it became almost mandatory.

Been overseas for ages and the only country I've come across surge protection being a common thing is some parts of the US (a country famous for terrible electrical grids). And then it's more commonly along the lines of "do I need a UPS".

If there's a big weather event that's likely to damage your gear then disconnect anything expensive and delicate. Having a puny little electrical component that absorbs a couple hundred joules isn't going to protect from a nearby lightning strike that has enough power to arc through a kilometer of air.

  • OOS already, but why are the outlets so close together?

Surge protected power boards is snake oil.

    • Are Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV) snake oil ?

      • Possibly. Are they made from the oily bi-product of snakes?

  • Have had this for years connected to my PC/Office equipment. Has worked a charm whenever there's been issues.

  • Just bought one with another $10 off coupon I have. Great price!

  • Any deals on 4 point boards?

  • +2

Nice but they are very big

    • +1

Agreed. Needlessly large. I use mine as a dinner table…

      • Yep, kinda a pain to try hide them cuz size.
I hope the new version SRB004AU2M, goes on sale anytime soon

  • Got one

    • More like you got GOT.

  • How often do you guys replace your surge protectors? I've got an old Belkin F9G823AU2M and the lights are still on. But if I remove a plug it makes a static sound sometimes. Probably time to move it on.
