  • Can you sail the seas with these?

    • +4

      I believe you can ;)

      • +2

        Any pointers matey?

        • Basically you can upload any mp3 file onto a MYO card (make your own). So you can convert a youtube clip, audiobooks from borrowbox, files from iTunes, record yourself/grandparents reading a bedtime story, etc

  • +2

I had zero interest in these, but noted a fellow ozb user saying how you can upload your own content and use some make your own cards. Our kids use borrowbox a lot (and ive been known to download some other audiobooks via the high seas) that they play via an old tablet. This looks pretty handy for little ones that you want to control what they are listening to a bit more.

    • The ecosystem get so expensive, good to know

    • +1

Yes this is what my friend has just taught me! She basically exclusively makes her own cards using audio tracks from youtube, borrowbox etc - I'm looking forward to trying it out!

      • Is it all via wifi?

        • WiFi and NFC from a mobile app

        • No need for wifi if you have a physical card inserted. I believe you can also download the card to the player to play offline (but you'd need to have the physical card initially).

        • +1

Wifi is required the first time you insert a card, so it can sync the audio to the device storage. After that no wifi is required for cards that have been sync'd.

My son uses it on flights to mix it up.

        • NFC cards are just links to Amazon storage. Need wifi to download initially. Or if content is deleted from device.

Any opinion on the mini vs full size for audio quality? I guess the mini is better for travelling (but not as good as a mini mp3 player would be for that sort of thing…)

    • Sorry, no experience on this! Most people I know have the mini just for portability, unsure how the sound quality differs if at all.

    • +1

mini is mono only, full size is stereo. bluetooth/headphone out put is stereo on both

      • I would recommend wired headphones when using Yoto and Yoto Mini, as they both use Bluetooth 4.2 which is over 10 years old at this point. Connecting Bluetooth headphones to the devices is very clunky and unintuitive, especially for kids. Once you're actually connected, the connection is quite unstable, plenty of dropouts and bandwidth issues - and of course once you're disconnected you have to go through the same unnecessarily complicated connection process all over again. Nevertheless I still love these devices, I'd just go wired all the way.

        • This is good to know, thanks! Personally I'm planning to buy wireless headphones that can convert to wired if needed (from Amazon).

    • I wouldn't recommend either of these for adults concerned about audio quality, but for anyone of any age who doesn't care about audio quality then they're just fine. I think the Mini's benefits over an mp3 player for kids are an easy-to-use interface and a built-in speaker which allows them to listen to what they want while still being able to hear other things around them.

Damnit - I literally just ordered 2 last night for my kids via Amazon.

    • Nooo - can get refunded I think?? Probably haven't even packed the order yet!

    • Just PM'd you for a code. Luckily my Amazon order hasn't dispatched yet so I can cancel easily. Great find Op!

Oops sorry to mods for not posting this very well/not following the rules. I have not posted many bargains in my time!

  • How long does it take after signing up to the collector tub for the 10% off and 1 free token take to get credited to your account? Am still waiting and no email has come through

    • Mine was literally immediate. How odd. I'd contact them to suss it out.

      • Ended up sorting it out via online chat. Just put my order through, thanks OP!

  • Thanks for the deal! Any suggestions on what to buy with the free credit?

    • +2

Haha that's the million dollar question! Depends on the age of your kids of course. So first I filtered by age. Then, being a true OzB, I sorted from most expensive to least expensive. I then listened to the preview of the ones that were most expensive & still just 1 credit, then picked one. Personally, I went with 'Old Bear & Friends' :)

      • Thanks I went with Winnie the Pooh given the length of the audiobook!

So the referral code doesn't stack for mini if using club membership because it'll bring the price down below $99.

Lame, shouldn't have signed up for the membership..

    • +1

Could you add a card to bring your price up above $99?

      • Yes. But the card is also not discounted with the referral 10%.

And cheaper to get the cards if you are on the membership with the credits that you get. So not exactly worth it.

        • So what was the cheapest way to get the mini…?

        • What method did you end up using? I'm reluctant to sign up for the month of the discount doesn't work on cards that I add to go with the mini (was just going to grab a packet of blanks…)

          • @JuryWheel: Couldnt get refund for membership so I added the starter pack to hit the minimum spend and make use of it

  • +2

Good post OP. I was literally about to post today, thought I had a better deal with a 15% code that seems to stack with referral at checkout - shows the discounted price, but once you enter your email address it gets removed :(

If people want to get cheaper MYO cards there are some instructions for how to get Aliexpress ones to work

  • Thanks!

  • Just doing the numbers here on the Player

    1. Just use referral 10% off = $128

    2. If you sign up to Collector is it $143 + $13.99, then stack 2 x 10% codes on top, so roughly $127?

The benefit of number 2 is that you get the free credit to use?

    • +1

You also get access to some content for 1 month.

But yes, basically the main benefit is the free credit, you can use it straight away to order a card same time as your player.

Or if you were planning on ordering more than ~$140 worth

  • Ok so i am trying to order. I've signed up to the Collector, and the chat says the 10% is auto applied at checkout which i can see "Club Member 10% Off"

How do i get the extra 10% off as a referee? (I clicked the referral link at the top under the description)

Or is what i am seeing correct (price is $128.70)

Edit: All good, got it sorted, had to log out of my account, then use the referral link

  • Anyone know how long delivery is meant to take? Is stock local?

    • I ordered on Thursday and will be delivered today according to AusPost tracking.

  • So if I want a mini with some blank cards, what's my best method do we think? Is direct from yoto the best place for blanks?

    • +1

      Cheapest blanks Amazon

      • Do you need to do anything special with these ones to get them working…?

        • +1
          • @shap08: "Donor Card" can this be the blank one that comes with the player?

            • @JuryWheel: Yes, mine only arrived today so can't say to much really.

              • +1

@shap08: Any success writing to the blanks yet?

                • +1

@JuryWheel: Yes, I've successfully done 2 of 2. Simply load playlist to original yoto card, then clone it with the app. Easy done!

                  • @shap08: which app do you use?

                      • @shap08: Im having a brutal time with this thing and the 2rd party blank cards…..only got 1 working so far. Can i ask what method you use? I assumed youd go to the website (i use pc), and "make a playlist" and add either music or books. Then turn on the yoto, open up the app and go to the created playlist, click "link to a card" in the app and put in the "welcome" card that came with the device. Do you find you need to erase the current links on the tag first, or it just over writes? Anyway, once on the "welcome" card, the go to the phone and open up tag writer app, go to write tag, copy tag, tap the "welcome" card with the new playlist on it, then tap the "blank" card from amazon and it will create a duplicate. Any i missing anything else…?

                        • @JuryWheel: I used the make your own card not the welcome card. That's the only difference, also ensure the playlist downloads completely on the original yoto card. You check that in the yoto app settings from your phone.

                          • @shap08: Do you find you need to format the blank ones from Amazon first?

                            • @JuryWheel: No the app will format the card when you copy the data

                          • @shap08: And when you say"the make your own" do you mean an official yoto one? So you bought a couple of hose as well as the offbrand ones? Sorry for all the questions!!

                            • @JuryWheel: Yes official one, you only need one, just keep writing the playlist to that card, let the yoto player download the playlist. Then copy to blank Amazon card

                              • @shap08: Thanks! I'm guessing you bought a pack of blanks from Yoto then as well? (Don't think the mini comes with any blanks…)

                                • +1

@JuryWheel: I bought the bundle pack from amazon, got Yoto player. It came with spares already.

                                • @JuryWheel: Just Did 10 books from Magic Tree House, got a few errors but eventually it wrote to the yoto card then I copied it to my blank.
