Is this unlabelled because you bottled it as a sort of one-off, or is it because you took the label off a previously branded item?

    • +1

Or ran out of labels for an intended branded item?

    • +22

Often cleanskins happen because a winery has (either through a cancelled wholesale order, a bumper harvest, or simply overestimating demand at a particular price) ended up with a surplus of something. Rather than slapping the label on and deeply discounting to clear the stock, they go the cleanskin route so they don't undermine customer perception of where the wine sits on the pricing rungs.

The winery is essentially accepting a lower price to clear out the inventory, while preserving their medium term ability to charge $35 for next year's vintage or whatever. If you just like nice wine and don't care much about parading the label around the dinner table, getting on the cleanskins from established wineries can be great.

      • +8

As someone who worked in all areas of the Wine Industry, the above comment is very correct.

You can get great value tasting wine (not so much for collecting or investment purposses)

by searching out good cleanscins, but nothing is guaranteed, so best buy one bottle to taste

before commiting to more unless confident or don't care about order. Anyone can buy a top label

by spending good money to get a good wine, but it is much harder And challenging not to mention

fun to hunt out the hidden Diamond in the woods lol.

        • +3

Agree, but I find that there are more and more "secret deals" or cleanskins that have a ridiculous RRP, and many of these deals come from places owned by the same group.

My personal joy is buying from less known family owned wineries. Sometimes you get bangers. Sometimes dreadful. I bought a bottle from a market the other day that was honestly a waste of $30! On paper the winery ticked the boxes: family owned, sells most of it's grapes to top quality wineries, great wine region and great wine area (right next door to a top tier winery), little to no information on the internet & vivino. But it tasted like the free wine that hotels give me

            @PCHammond: @PCHammond @ozhunter68 @pork @Punkboy @seanbaussie

Yep - it’s the same wine as our Bec Hardy Family Crest SA Red Blend 2023, which normally goes out through export and DTC channels.
We simply ran short on labels on the bottling line and ended up with 100 six-packs bottled under cork, but unlabelled.

Same wine. No label. Lower price.

PS Apoloigies for delayed reply - was out of the office.

          • -1

@PCHammond: Just something to think about, what the Winery owners, sales staff or any staff can

be the truth, sometimes not. I used to also work next door to a top tier International

Wine Company/label, and although mmmost of our wines were good to great, I still also noticed

what went on behind the scenes, especially when they make wine from outsourced grapes,

            possibly from far away.

  • 24 Months in oak is fancy. Old or new oak?

I can't find any wines on the website that have 24 months in oak. One off?

    • +3

Cork closure indicates that it was likely intended for export

      • @J-B DTC and export. Correct.

    • +1

French oak at that. You'd have to think old oak at that price or maybe a mix depending on the style they were trying to achieve with this one

    • +1

If it's 100% new you will likely be sucking juice from wood, unless the fruit is super premium (intense enough) to balance out that heavy oak influence.
Examples can be Bordeaux Grand Cru Classé and Penfolds Grange.

That said, not sure which wine this is, haven't seen any 24 month oak in the range before.

      • Alot more to that than just quality of grapes. I'm interpreting 24 months as a more premium version of their wines.

Sometimes I don't like an oak bomb for a mid week quaffer. But I'll send through an order and give it a shot. Wife is going to be pissed haha. I ran out of storage 5 orders ago

        • Hahhha, you should stop but cant go wrong with this price (btw I am in the same boat).

          • +1

@NoBargainNoLife: It's totally going to arrive when I'm travelling for work.

On the plus side, I've been told that I need to drink more so that she can get some storage areas back. Might be able to convince her to let me buy another wine fridge, but I'll fill that up too!

            • +2

@PCHammond: @PCHammond If you need delayed shipping, please let us know. Happy to delay shipment. :-)

    • Old oak predominantly - 24 months in new oak would be like chewing a tree ;-)

  • +2

Happy to give this a go at that price. Was thoroughly impressed with this drop, so I'm more likely to try these until the losses outweigh the wins.

    • +1

Just checked that wine, sounds like a great value quality wine.

Bit jealous as my mouth still Loves good wine, but my stomach says No unfortunately.

At least I can still tollerate good quality beers and some spiritts lol.

      • +3

My liver doesn't like good wine. I ignore it

        • It's not my liver that I am too concerned about, but the next day after drinking wine I immediately and consistently suffer bad pains (won't go into details, but you can use your imagination). I used to work in Winery Tasting rooms and work with Wine Makers and Head Chefs in a top Victorian Winery Resort, so I did my fair share of tasting and drinking for over a decade without issues and loved it lol.

  • +1

Seems like a no brainer. Bought.

  • +1

Thanks RD always love your wine, purchased x2

  • IF YOU ARE HAPPY TO RECEIVE THE LABELLED VERSION YOU CAN CONTINUE TO PURCHASE.

Is it Red Blend (as per the comment above) or pure Shiraz (as per description)?

    • +11

@igorekh Good question! The short answer is: both. The longer (and more technical) answer is that this wine is 86% Shiraz, with the balance made up of Tempranillo and Merlot to add softness and complexity. Under Australia’s labelling regulations, anything with 85% or more of one variety can be legally labelled as that variety, so this qualifies as a Shiraz. That said, this is actually the unlabelled (or now labelled) version of our Bec Hardy Family Crest SA Red Blend 2023 - same wine, no label, different price.Varietal and inter-vintage blending is common practice, especially in warmer regions like McLaren Vale, where the goal is balance, flavour, and consistency and not necessarily always strict varietal purity. Cheers! RD :-)

I just finished my first bottle of this from a previous deal, and it's really good. Have to find room for another 6 bottles of it now, but first world problems. :)

        • +1

@Whorl according to a few comments above you and others share a similar "problem!" :-)

      • Excellent info, thanks for explaining. I was unaware of the 85% thing.

      • Oh, didn't know that, thanks for enlightening me. Ordered a 6-pack to give it a shot 🍷

  • God I'm useless.. bought 2 cases and forgot to use the voucher code.. oh well

    • +6

@drprox Please just drop me your order number as a DM and I'll refund it. Cheers! RD :-)

      • +2

Oh awesome! Ok thanks for helping rectify my stupidity.. (I guess)

        • All good - we've all done it :-)

  • +1

Thanks Richard for keeping the offer up on the labelled stuff, 12 bottles headed my way :)

    • +3

Thanks @anzacpaul! Glad you got in - saved me from the inevitable “I missed out, got any left?” messages - knew there'd be a few that otherwise missed out. Thanks for the order. Enjoy! Richard :-)

  • Any Barossa reds to suggest

    • @acq01 Thanks for the suggestion! We actually don’t have any Barossa wines at the moment. All our reds at the moment are from our home region in McLaren Vale.

If it’s big, bold reds you’re after, I’d say our McLaren Vale Shiraz or even the Family Crest Red Blend might just scratch that same itch. Cheers! RD :-)

    • Depends on your budget and your taste in wine. Laughing Jack can be bought from Dan Murphys and is excellent for <30.

Standish on the other hand is not cheap but one of the best. I regard their wines to be the most expensive that I will buy, since anything more expensive will be too painful to drink.

    • they just had a big once a year wine market last month at barossa, could of bought wine out of wine makers car boot lol

  • Given this is export, does it have more sulfites than a typical local wine?

    • @Puti
The wine is made for DTC locally and export. Irrespective of the market, it's only minimal sulfites that are ever added. Cheers! RD :-)

  • +1

As always, thank you. Great wine for the price.

  • +1

Took a chance at $8.33 a bottle delivered, thanks OP.

  • +1

This business (and RD) are always fantastic to deal with, awesome wines too. Great deal!!!

  • Ordered 6 pack :) Thanks OP!

  • Ordered thanks OP.

  • +1

Purchased others recently with claimed $130 for $10/bott and seem to come back to a bottle of Bec's and wonder why it still tastes way better.
Glad to see this deal with a justifiable amount of +plus votes for Bec Hardy wine, keep posting and thanks again RD!

    • Thanks @MMM - kind words, thank you. :-)

  • Ordered, thank you OP

  • +2

Received my case yesterday. Really enjoyable wine, very happy with it.

    • Are you a regular Clare valley Reisling drinker? How does it compare with others?

      • +2

I generally drink shiraz, other than that my only guide is that is doesn't taste cheap :)

        • +2

Opened mine up last night. Very much agree!

  • My dozen bottles arrived today however the bottles are labeled as a red blend which i find strange, are everyone else’s bottles labeled the same way?

    • Yes and labelled as SA rather than McLaren Vale potentially indicating inferior grapes were used. However I'm inclined to give RD benefit of the doubt based on his earlier explanation of the blend and general good experience with BH wines

      • @Punkboy Thanks for the thoughtful take, we really appreciate the trust :-)

To clarify for others reading: using “SA” and “Red Blend” gives us vintage-to-vintage flexibility which is particularly useful for export (especially to the US) and to avoid costly re-registration in certain international markets like Vietnam and Indonesia. Rest assured, every claim on our label is backed by an auditable documentation trail and subject to Wine Australia’s strict compliance regime.

Appreciate your kind words on the wines — we work hard to deliver real value.

    • +1

      @T_double_U
To confirm the wine you have received is correct. The original offer of the Cleanskin McLaren Vale Shiraz 2023 actually sold out around 2.50pm on Thursday around 2 hours after first posting. The OzBargain post and the website were updated immediately to reflect the fact that we would honour the deal and provide the same wine but with labels.

This is also the subject of some contemporaneous discussion in the thread above.

The wine is labelled as Bec Hardy ‘Family Crest’ Red Blend 2023 as detailed on the website page which the OzBargain offer directs to -> https://bechardy.com.au/products/mvsz23?variant=467306884630…

For the avoidance of doubt, the Cleanskin McLaren Vale Shiraz 2023 and the ‘Family Crest’ Red Blend 2023 you have received are the same wine.

      • That makes perfect sense, sorry for missing the earlier clarification.

        • +1

@T_double_U not a problem at all - easy to miss. Hope you enjoy the wine :-)

          • @RD ADL: I’m sure we will, I’ve actually just decanted a bottle to have with dinner tonight :)

  • Looks like I am late to the party. OOS.

    • @hiaaron Thanks for the heads-up it does look to be but I'll get the team to do a count today and see if it definitely has/hasn't :-)

    • +1

      Hi @hiaaron 2 x 6-packs remain. Cheers! RD :-)

  • +1

I just got my 12 bottles, I thought I was ordering Shiraz but it turned up as a red blend….
You could call this monkeys ass cheeks for all I care, this thing tastes INCREDIBLE!!!!! for the price I think it’s a great buy.

    • Wish I bought 12.

  • +1

I came back on here to say that I opened a bottle tonight and it tastes amazing!

    • +1

@nkription @sammyjj @slickaz Thanks for the kind words and glad you are enjoying the wines.
You can find a few more deals at www.wineshedsale.com.au and if you use the code BIGSTEAK you'll get free shipping. :-)

      • Thanks @RD ADL How does this 2023 vintage compare to the Family Crest SA Red Blend 2022 still available on your site?

        • +1

@sammyjj different region. Different blend. Longtime since I tasted the 2022 and you guys OzBargained the 2023 before I’d even seen a bottle- but they’d be different for sure. Hope that helps :-)

  • @RD ADL
    sorry for random note.
My coworker has been raving about your wines for a couple of weeks and recommended the family crest Red Blend - I'm going to get one of the 6 packs but would also love some other recommendations from you/Bec?
I tend to like full-bodied reds with medium tannins, low acidity and do love bit of oak, french oak is my favourite! I’m not big on fruity or acidic styles, I prefer something savoury, structured and easy to sip.
this is a pull from one of my flavour profiles from a wine club
    annins: Medium and smooth

    Acidity: Low
Sweetness: Subtle (not dessert wine sweet, but a touch of softness)
Oak: Yes. Ideally French oak, some American oak if not too bold
Flavours: Spice, cedar, tobacco, leather, chocolate, savoury herbs, vanilla, fig

Sorry if asking too much, just keen to try the best recommendations straight from the source!

  • Hi @dkav not too much at all, love the detail!

Based on your flavour profile, you're absolutely on the money with the Family Crest Red Blend — it's right in that zone of savoury, structured, and French oak-matured.

I've been enjoying the Pertaringa 'Lakeside' Cab Sauv and Shiraz both from the 2024 vintage and both from McLaren Vale just recently at home mid-week. Easy drinkers, with or without food. You can find those here at www.wineshedsale.com.au and the above code should work for free shipping!

    Happy drinking. Richard :-)

PS There are 3 packs of this left which Dave our warehouse chap has just found in the shed so hop in quick for one. I've not tasted it as it got OzBargained but it has had some good reviews from OzB members. :-)
