  • Saw a few people in Tough Mudder wearing the GoPro on head bands.

    • +1

I was one of them… (Asian guy with red bandana, brown singlet, black shorts, 9:15am start). The video was stunningly clear. One issue was the small battery. I had the additional battery "bacpac" and it only just lasted my event. That's with me only recording the obstacles. I also Rain-x treated my lense which seemed to help. First time I've used a GoPro so a few lessons learned. I actually got it for my other hobbies: caving and cave diving. Which I'm not too sure about as it doesn't seem to handle low light all that well.. I'll have to experiment with the settings.

      • Ah nice, there were quite a few people using it in my 10.40am start yesterday. how did you go with having it on your head all event? I'd imagine it getting a bit annoying after a while?
Oh and did you find it a lot easier than last year? Seemed a little bit 'cut down' this time round.

        • +2

At first it was kind of bulky (as I had the GoPro (battery) bacpac on). But by the first obstacle I got used to it and barely noticed it was there the rest of the run. This was my first Tough Mudder. Although I've done other mud runs…

      • A friend of mine took a Go Pro caving.

You get interesting results but the low light situation is very evident and results in a very hard to follow film.

Also due to the nature of the activity, you hardly ever get to see anything but walls.

        • Yeah I see what your saying about "dry" caves. I'm hoping the wide angle of the GoPro will do the caves I visit, some justice. I'm also thinking I'm going to need the LCD screen so I can compose my shots.
As for "wet" caves which I dive. I've already bought a "goodman" handle platform which has two video lights. Haven't had a chance to use it yet (I only received my Hero3 a week ago). Happy to answer any questions but probably best to drop me a private msg to keep this thread on topic. Unless people think this is relevant?

        • if you use lcd screen you lose use of the batt pack?
Its also a good idea to use an ipod or iphone to compose shots

        • sony action cam has awesome low light sensor but awkward to mount unless your using headband

  • Seems to be a good competitive price for the Black Edition.
I just received mine yesterday with the remote but please note: you can only either use the remote OR a smart phone to connect to the Device - not both at once.
For me, I would probably use the smart phone and not the wifi remote that often and probably should have saved some money and gotten the Silver Edition.

    • The remote is only one of the differences between Silver and Black though.

By all accounts performance of the Black easily justifies the extra cost (except for the stability issues people are having across the board with the GP3's)

      • I personally like the remote. Worth noting that its waterproof to 3m. But the wifi sucks the battery down pretty quick.

      • Any more info on the stability issues? It's stopped me getting one so far. Don't want to end up with a pain in the ass device :p

Dont want to sound rude Digitalane. But i have a GoPro Black edition and their IS A difference between the silver and the Black. Its NOT just the remote.

        Black Editon
        1080p60 / 720p120 / 1440p48 /
        4kp15 / 2.7kp30 / WVGA-240fps
        12MP / 30 fps Burst
        Wi-Fi Built-In
        Wi-Fi Remote Included
        GoPro App Compatible*
        Pro Low-Light Performance

        Silver Edition
        1080p30 / 960p48 / 720p60fps
        11MP / 10 fps Burst
        Wi-Fi Built-In
        Wi-Fi Remote + App Compatible*

Technically the Black edition offers more Video options and a higher Res for photos =]

He said the remote is only one of the differences, which means there are other differences and the remote is just one of them.

        • Yeah - that was my point - the spec bump easily justifies the $100 price increase and for me the remote is just an added bonus

    Double post

  • can't decide whether to get this or silver edition for $295:
    http://www.digitalrev.com/product/gopro-hero3-silver-edition…

  • i probably know the answer but still want someone to confirm:

the stock of Kogan is grey import and i will NOT be able to claim gst at the TRS office. is it correct?

also guys please comment the firmware issue? i read a lot on Amazon that Hero 3 had huge issues. like lock up frequently, etc.

    • it ships from kogan HK which means no GST is charged/claimable

    • +1

A lot of issues with GoPro Hero 3, Mostly with Black Edition.
Freezing within the first 3 seconds, freezing when recording.
The CEO of GoPro made an official statement appologizing

      • -1

they should fix the issue asap. appology wont do any good to the customers.

thanks for it, i wont take the risk this time.

        • +1

This is the first I've heard of these issues. I haven't seen these bugs myself. But I did update my camera as soon as I received it.

I don't think anybody who paid $349 actually got a go pro delivered for that price. They were all cancelled/bait advertising/scam

    • Yup, I asked Kogan for a raincheck before they refunded me AND when they had stock. They still wouldn't sell it to me for the original purchase price. I'd rather pay more or save money and order from the states than give Kogan my business. If you were in that group who didn't recieve your GoPro after Kogan said they were in stock please contact the ACCC, they're collecting data on Kogan, the more people that complain the more than can do to stamp out dishonestly in retail.

  • Does it come with the Aus plug or does it need a converter?

    • Just USB cable to charge i think

      • I can confirm that you can charge the camera (and Bacpac) via any USB port.

  • They are $450 US ($428 OZ - XE Converter) with FedEX priority from GPS City USA … currently shipping for the 24th so you would (should) have it by the 29th I bet (given the Australa day holiday on Monday)… so its a pretty normal price, and personally I would take GPS City over Kogan any day, you can pickup any RAM mounts etc. you want at the same time.

Beware the Kogan class 6 microsd as the black recommends a class 10 for certain features
go to officeworks and get them to pricematch and beat shoppingsquare
for a 32gig class 10 they will reduce the price from $82 down to $30
the store worker was shocked at the price difference and said 'i kicked arse' :0

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Cam…

    http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_401250_SanDisk_Ultra_32GB…

Officeworks has to beat the price
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/content/Lowest-price-gu…

also in regards to one issue you should turn it on before plugging usb cable in to charge to avoid a lockup
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm0xQZ4lzLc

I recommend a Nitecore torch or powerful headlamp for night scenes and also a head strap for the hero3

    • Thanks for the info on the best place to get a 32GB micro SD class 10

I just bought a black edition for $399 from Wayne Ritchies Skiers Edge with free delivery. Their website only shows the old version but they do have the new version in stock. I didn't realise it was the old version when I ordered it and they rang to say they don't have the old one in stock.
The silver edition is $379 but only $399 for the black

    • You commented twice without saying which store location you bought it from and link to buy online,

could you kindly provide a link or store location with stock? cheers !

      • Skiers edge website. They store in Shepparton didn't have them in stock. I have just checked their website and it isn't coming up at the moment. I will ring them tomorrow to see if they are putting the hero 3 on their website.

Sorry to comment on both deals, just wanted to share a cheaper price

        • you got lucky mate, only silver left at all stores, no black and expected in 5-6 weeks stock

  • Kogan or any online only store are not authorised to sell GoPro cameras.
You have to have a bricks and mortar store to become a stockist.

GoPro will go to such extents to stop these stores from selling as buying and tracking serial numbers.
So what did kogan do, they shipped there stock with out a serial number. It was just a simple sticker under the battery.

The new GoPro 3, has the serial number in the software, so this is no longer possible.

So you might say, well Kogan have them now. Yes they do, they also state that it might not be the same, as if you brought it from a store.

I would like to know what they have done now. I will find out, but if anyone out there knows, it would be good info.
If I was to guess, I would say they have hacked the software and wiped the serial number. This should be doable, but you will have a problem updating your firmware.
