Bought one of these recently- it is junk- made of cheap metal and feel like they will break. we are going to replace it.
That's Ikonic brand for you lol. Known poor by tradies.
Known poor by tradies.
no poor tradies……fify 😉
They were an upgrade for me, and I couldn't justify spending >4x the amount on the "fancier" brands. Each to their own I guess :)
Suitable for quick renovations before selling.
The door locks from this brand are quite poor in quality. If you're renovating to live in the home yourself, it's worth spending a bit more on better hardware—it's something you'll use every day.
What would be better alternatives but still affordable?
Also looking for affordable alternatives. Have tried this one and another ikonic one - both are ok at best - however they are also half the price of other alternatives that I could see?
Agree with the above comments. Got these replaced with Lockwood door handles - the locksmith stated these Ikonic-branded door handles/knobs are absolute junk and belong at the dump.
Being a "privacy" lever, does mean they're not intended for external doors, but to provide Internal privacy.. If you want security, you buy a "security" lock. I agree with the locksmith, I'd be through one of these in under 30sec by hand, under 10 by mechanical, and they're susceptible to bump keys so seconds with a little brain power and prep.
Locksmiths seldom deal with internal doors, because few people can justify the cost for access handles because you're paying skilled labour rates for manual labour with no value-add. But if you want to keep the kids out of the study, they will suffice- if you find them bypassing it, slowly upgrade and by the time they reach 18 they'll already have a skilled trade apprenticeship complete without ever having to leave home.
If external security is your goal there's little sense in forking out huge sums of cash for top of the line locks, if you've got compressed cardboard for a door, or if you don't also have an alarm. For free standing homes, an entry level secure lock (whether handle or deadbolt) is perfectly sufficient, bevause there are easier ways for an intruder to gain access. Apartments are secure by design m and can benefit from high end/multiple locks, but there really is no substitute for a good alarm system in all cases.
Do not know how fancier the lock will be more secure if the doors are junk and thin. Only way to safety is keep a big dog…
Dogs are a detterant, and prevent proper security from doing it's job. Even a dog needs sleep - from my experience at the times when you most want them alert and responsive. My dog is brilliant m, he'll let us know if someone is across the road walking past, if he's awake and he sleeps like a cat. But he's also the reason my alarm stays off line.
We are getting close to "smart" alarm systems that can accommodate pets being affordable, simple to use and standalone but not just yet.
Got the chrome and is alright. It works.
Anyone got any recommendation for internal doors that are good value? Want a balance of price and quality
Have the silver ones and managed to put a deep cut on my finger when getting to close to the spindle part. Only my first home and didnt want to spend much and does the job. But you really notice the low quality after using a better one
Wobbing handles in no time.
These were down to $7 at lidcombe bunnings today. There were several left in the discount trolley, near locks and levers front side of shop.
Great price
