  • These are Li-Po batteries, be careful with these

    • +1

      Why is that?

      • Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) batteries have higher energy density, and are more likely to catch fire or explode under stress.

        • Li-Po batteries are the most common in power banks due to their slim, affordable design and are safe with proper use and built-in protections. In contrast, alternatives, such as LiFePo4 offer greater safety and stability but are bulkier and more expensive, making them less common. Most power banks rely on Li-Po, and while alternative options exist, their cost are significantly higher.

Purely anecdotal, but I had a friend who had a pretty major house fire while leaving a Li-Po battery on charge.

If damaged, faulty, or charged incorrectly, LiPo batteries can enter a state of thermal runaway, where the internal temperature increases uncontrollably, potentially leading to fire, explosion, and the release of toxic fumes. Overcharging a LiPo battery can cause it to swell, overheat, and potentially explode or catch fire.

LiPo fires are extremely hot and can be difficult to extinguish, potentially causing significant damage and posing a serious safety risk.

Discharging a LiPo battery below its recommended voltage can also lead to damage and potential safety hazards.

Using the wrong charger, charging unattended, or charging on flammable surfaces can increase the risk of fire.

        • This power bank has a protection board that cuts charging at the proper voltage and disconnects if the pack overheats, the cells are protected by fuses for extra fault isolation, and the unit is certified to UN 38.3 transport tests so it’s cleared for air freight. With the same sensible handling you’d give a smartphone, which also use Li-Po, the chance of a thermal-runaway incident is no greater than your smartphone.

  • will they catch fire?

    • @stevea Li-Po isn’t some exotic “ready-to-ignite” battery, it’s the same pouch-cell tech used in nearly every phone, tablet, power bank and pair of earbuds. This power bank has a full battery-management system that cuts charge or load if voltage, current or temperature stray, each cell has a resettable PTC fuse, the case is aluminium plus V-0 fire-rated ABS/PC; and the finished unit is certified for air transport. Treat it like your phone, use a reputable USB-C charger, don’t crush or puncture it, keep it out of extreme heat and the fire risk is no greater than the device already in your pocket.
