Are Certain Blue Collar Workers Naturally Gluttonous?

How do someone like tradies, truckies and construction workers casually indulge in so much crap from petrol stations and takeaway joints during working hours?

The thought of feeling bloated and then doing physical work makes me uneasy. Toilet access is also not easily accessible in those kinds of jobs.

If I wanted to destroy my gut for the sake of pleasure, I’d do it at home on the comfort of my sofa.

    • Smoking joints would be on OH&S issue…

Not if you were a butcher and smoking a joint of pork to make ham.

  • What a weir post.

Meth burns a lot of calories… Need to carb load like a MF… or so I have been told by “friends”.

And what do you do for a job se we all have the chance to shit all over what you eat?

GYG shrunk their burritos by 30% in the last year, the are a total RIPOFF now

Usually tuna wholemeal wrap or last night leftovers in my lunchware. I do go to a service station food court sometimes nearby behind my work to grab a $1.50 piece potato cakes.

That’s where you will see all of them grabbing 600ml soft drinks, ice coffees and telling food staff to chuck in multiple fried bites in 2-3 brown bag with pride while other type of workers grabs the minimum.

Would rather use that $15 on a burger to enjoy the night with a peace of mind.

    Talk about a hater.

It has to do with availability and cost.

Tradies start work around 6am. Lunch is 10am. Know what's open at 10am? Bakeries. That's it.

My local cafe started opening at 6am and pre prepping panini, focaccia etc. Tradies are lining up. Again - because it's there.

It's a reflection of businesses, not consumer values.

Should also add that many tradies pack their own lunches and coffees etc. Their caloric requirements would be twice that of an average worker (especially brickies)

    • -1

      Tradies are lining up.

Why don't they just make their lunch rather than buy it?

      • Ah why doesn't anyone on any given day make their lunch?

        Geez, critical much….

Too much cash, gotta spend it somewhere , plus it helps the local economy

So if we did start building and improving millions of homes every year, then thousands of backers across the country will suddenly be making a lot more money, need to hire more people to make more focaccia? Investing in new houses seems like it would help the country out as a whole more than investing in existing properties. The country is ran backwards to how it should be run in a technocratic society. Politicians don't give one single (profanity).

      • -1

The country is ran backwards to how it should be run in a technocratic society.

Not really. "Trust the experts" is the new maxim for the average Joe Normie and the majority of Politicians. Outsourcing your thinking, unquestioningly, to Google/TheNews/TheDoctor/ChatGPT is standard behaviour now.

It's just that technocracy isn't all that it's cracked up to be. And that's mainly because 'the experts' are often duds. They can't think beyond their scope of expertise, they ignore wider impacts or consequences, or they are easily influenced by monetary gain (whether that's backhanders or merely meeting misguided KPIs in order to get this year's bonus or next year's promotion) and are not making recommendations or giving advice that aligns with good outcomes (for people other than themselves).

Our country is actually being run a little bit better than a technocratic society would be. For example we don't have Soviet bread queues. Although we did have those toilet paper queues (strangely enough that only ever occured while everything was being run with overt authoritarianism under the technocratic "trust the experts" mantra).

We don't need any more authoritarianism in this country thank you.

        • +1

The USSR was definitely not a technocratic society because political power was concentrated in the hands of Communist Party elites, not technical experts or engineers, with decisions driven by ideology rather than evidence-based technical governance.

Not worthy of the excellent stamp but maybe a "good try" sticker and a smiley face? I say he's earned it.

          • @AustriaBargain: It's an oligarchy / gangster hybrid. Same as the USA

Soviet bread queues were because the government controlled the resources and set the prices and access.

Toilet paper queues were because in a free and capitalist society, where market set the price and people could buy as many as they want, people stockpiled as much as they could which caused supply shortages.

There's no connection (though good on you for spotting some people queueing for something and having a go at detecting a pattern, I guess)

          • -2

@Crow K: Soviet bread queus were because the government exercised authoritarian control.

Toilet paper queues were because the government told everyone they were going to exercise authoritarian control starting from Monday (yeah it was so urgent they could wait til next Monday lol).

            • @tenpercent: Not even remotely true, but if you want to go with that, back yourself king.

At least now we know why you're distrustful of trusting the experts (they're people who know what they're talking about)

              • -2

@Crow K: Did you trust the 'experts' who said '2 weeks to flatten the curve'?
Did you trust 'the experts' who said 'don't stand up while drinking without a mask but do sit down and drink without a mask'?
Did you trust the 'experts' who said 'there's WMDs in Iraq'?

Did you trust the 'experts' who said the Earth was at the centre of the universe?

Can you answer just one of the first three questions? They're simple yes/no questions.

                        • -1

@tenpercent: If it's something you've said to me and I say it back to you, is that me cherry picking and misconstruing? If you don't want to be called out for asking a stupid question, don't ask a stupid question, son.

You're admitting it's a mix of good faith and bad faith questions, and yet to asked for a single "yes" on how I felt about them as whole?

Christ knows what you're meant to be good at, but it isn't this.

I'm going to start tipping my trolley over onto its side when I'm done with it. It's the only way you're going to learn what life is like when other people go out of their way to make things needlessly difficult for others.

                            Is that a "yes"?

I'll elaborate so that it's clear: Is that a "yes" … to any of the questions?

I'm going to start tipping my trolley over onto its side when I'm done with it. It's the only way you're going to learn what life is like when other people go out of their way to make things needlessly difficult for others.

You're already making things needlessly difficult. But my questions are not difficult.
They're not trick questions. They're not partial differential equations. They're simple yes/no questions.

You're doing a lot of ducking and diving for someone with the pseudonymn Crow K. Stop avoiding the questions.

@tenpercent: Nobody could seriously blame the fwittery of dunny roll hoarding on any layer of govt.If anything it's origins are online cookers and social media stupidity. And probably all from the USA originally from the deranged prepper community.

              • @Protractor: Surely the prepper community were already prepared for such an authoritarian break down of democracy?

      • I think you've commented in the wrong thread.

Two things IMO, 1 is that I'd imagine they need a lot of high calorie foods due to how physically intensive it is and as someone who buys takeaway a lot the price isn't as bad as one would think. Grocery stores are so expensive, and my blue collar friends buy things on the way somewhere due to time constraints.

    1. I also think your gut gets used to the food you eat. I used to constantly eat kfc, dominos, chips and big breakfasts and never had digestion issues (besides making me fat). Weirdly eating healthy foods made me feel off. The last 2 years I've been working on eating healthy and it took a lot of time for my gut to re-adjust, but now fast food affects me when it never used to.

The body really doesn't care all that much. As long as you aren't overeating too much, it's all fats and proteins, it's coal into the furnace as far as the body is concerned. It's probably better to have a body that can deal with whatever you throw into it, than to be a gassy food intolerant person who is knocked out by a greasy burger. Nice to have a body that's so healthy you don't even need to pay attention to it.

      That sums up about me

  • Lots of tradies forgo meals during the day for this reason.

People should be able to be as obese as they want to be, up until the point in impacts on other people.
That list is actually quite long. The same rule applies to AHs, who have no idea.

    • Love people that overburden an already over stretched health system due to their own poor nutritional habits.

How do someone like tradies, truckies and construction workers casually indulge in so much crap from petrol stations and takeaway joints during working hours?

Like everyone else, with OzBargain deals.

  • The easy answer is that the human body is highly adaptable to the conditions it's exposed to.

You feed it shit all the time, you'll have no problems digesting it, nor will it make you feel ill.

Long term effects are different, but that wasn't your question.

I only eat bad food, and only drink energy drinks (literally 2L a day; no alcohol, no milk, limited water) and other than obesity, I feel (and am, based on my blood results) 100% healthy (I also never get sick, maybe once in the last 3 years).

I can even eat lightly-spoiled food without getting sick too.

I bet that'd all change if I tried to eat healthy and lose weight.

  • Honestly speaking most trades people i know are 'not over-weight' if we are talking Truck drivers i mean what do expect they spend 8-14 hours a day sitting they are probably smashing servo food to fight the 'bordem'

Anyway from my point of view each to their own - if your happy with how you are im not judging
