Inb4 the comments about the made in Japan version being better despite it basically being unavailable in aus

    • +1

Because of higher egg yoke content than allowed here. That's what makes it delicious & creamy.

      • +2

Me not understanding about the egg yoke. Please explain.
I made mayonnaise myself using 3 egg yokes.

        • +5

As discussed in previous Kewpie Deals, egg yoke contents of 10% or more can't be sold here. Japanese Kewpie has a higher content than that.

More egg yokes the better in mayo😉
So keep making your own mayo!

        • +2

Normal Kewpie sold here contains 9.5% egg yolk, to be legally available.
Bought 1kg last week at Korean store.

"It's generally recommended to consume eggs that are fully cooked to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses"
But many healthy people eat raw eggs!

          • @INFIDEL: Thanks

          • +2

@INFIDEL: I'm glad you said egg yolk this time, coz all this talk of egg yokes was doing my head in xD

    • -1

It is available if you go to the Japanese grocers

      • -1

Really? I’ve never seen it at any Asian grocery store even Japanese specialty ones

        • +2

It’s only the 1kg one that is sometimes made in Japan at the Asian grocers

        • There are different varieties of Kewpie.

"Mild" is cheapest & lowest in Egg yoke content. I don't buy the mild, based on lower creaminess & taste .

So Japanese "Mild" version may be legally sold here.

        • +2

The Japanese grocers here in Sydney. The two I shop at; Lucky Mart and Tokyo Mart usually have it.

      • +1

I buy the Japanese Kewpie at Genki mart here in Brisbane. There is a difference in taste between the two, but not so much as to make a huge difference - the Thai Kewpie is also great. I love Kewpie with prawns or cold roast meat. Also mixing through with tuna for a sandwich. So good.

        • Thanks - must try Genki mart. Am in Brisbane. They sometimes have specials on Japanese Alcohol!

What is the egg yoke content shown on the bottle?

    • I'm more concerned about the line "May contain traces of eggs". Like for real mayo? You don't say!

      • -1

Traces of egg? It’s 10% egg.

      • +3

hint of sarcasm not picked up name checks oot

    • You can buy it in Camberwell, purple shop near St Mark's

      .. including ozb deals page

  • Often cheaper at Asian grocers

  • Good price. I bought the 500g last year at mido Asian store in regent place for $7.49 and I thought that was a bargain already.

  • $10.99 for 1kg everyday at Spudshed for the WA folks.

  • -2

40cents cheaper then amazon…… not much of a bargain

  • $13 for 1kg at Coles now.

    • +1

But hard to find. Even at Asian grocer. So this one still better than no kewpie

    • +3

No doubt but that doesn't make this deal neg worthy c'mon bro…

    • +2

Neg is only valid if can buy Japanese version of this here! Which we can't.
Adding airfares to Japan makes it SO much dearer💰

Standard "Mild" version from Japan is available here, BUT is very different to this!

  • Love it. Cheap Kewpie

  • Just get the 1kg SSK Mayo from woolies if you want made in jp

    • -1

It's not just the country of origin that matters!

It's the high egg content of Japanese Kewpie that makes it great (creamy & tasty). But it's just not legal to sell here as exceeds 10% egg yolk.

So the locally available (Thai) version of normal Kewpie has 9.5% egg yolk.
Same with your SSK Mayo. So no benefit.

It's also the taste that matters!
SSK Mayo is Japanese egg Mayo, but it's a different taste.

"Kewpie is known for its distinct tangy, sweet, and savory flavor, while SSK is described as having a more balanced, creamy, and slightly sweet taste."

So each are good for different uses.
      I prefer Kewpie

  • Woolies price is $4.30
Along with lots of other 30-50% off specials.

If OOS, 1 month rainchecks are available again!
Makes price available long after sold out @Aldi.

If buying now in shop with Woolies Rewards Dollars, R$20 gets you 1000p (R$5) back!
Effectively making this $3.23 until Tues👍

    Thats what I did today

If you want to try the Sriracha Kewpie🌶…

Can just buy a standard Kewpie & mix in sriracha. That way you can control level of spiciness.
And still have the Original Kewpie for other use.

Having bought Sriracha & Wasabi varieties in past, found the flavours were too weak for my taste.
    So mix my own🌶

  • 80.5% fat with 12.4% saturated :/
Don't know if I'd even be able to stomach that. I prefer chilli mayos now anyway and they usually have around ~35% at the cost of added sugar.

    • -2

Mayonnaise is typically made from oil (fat), eggs (egg yolks), and acid like vinegar or lemon juice.

So good mayo is a lot of fats.

Mayo has only relatively recently been produced as lower fat (adding sugar etc), to suit people concerned that 'eating fats makes them fat'.
Some people find processing fats difficult. (I do.)

You can make your own. A good beginners culinary skill.

      • Yeah but that figure seems excessive, even the Japanese version (from the JP website) which everyone is raving on about in this post has slightly less at ~74.6% (even lower in other countries).

        • -1

Yes, 80.5% here vs 74.6% fat in Japan…
          Higher egg content in Japan!
Which will make it lower relative % fats.

Enjoyed Kewpie on many trips to Japan.
          Had some here tonight.
Just limit the intake & enjoy.
(Bought 1kg last week. 6 month supply.)

    Product of Thailand.

Not the creamy Japanese one :-[

    • I just checked both Coles and Woolies… also from Thailand…!
