    Aahhhh damn.
I paid more from the last AliExpress deal and still waiting for it to arrive.

    • +2

I was going on and off Aliexpress, then I found one particular seller a bit dodgy with the discount and went to check Amazon again just before placing my order. Obviously placed my order at Amazon instead.

    • is it weird AliExpress sells 8BitDo ?
      not much cheaper than retail

      • +1

8BitDo is a Chinese company. Not weird to have a presence on TaoBao/Aliexpress.

        • oh didn't know, given the highish pricing and their unique ability to get wireless xbox controllers….
          how's warranty off Aliexpress?

          • @furyou: Not sure about how they handle warranty if bought from AliExpress. If price is similar, better get one from Amazon. I only bought from Amazon and once from their original website because they had limited editions.

  • Does it support switch 2?

    • Yes, although apparently cannot "wake" Switch 2 as yet (according to Reddit and previous OzBargain comments). Everything else seems to work perfectly.

      • +9

Note there's two version of the Ultimate 2:

Your deal is for the 'Wireless' model, while the Reddit post (and the previous deals) is referencing the 'Bluetooth' Model.

        8bitdo naming scheme is confusing…

        • +3

Ooops… Thanks, I didn't even see that. Not a deal breaker for me but definitely good to be aware of that. I guess I will have to play Switch 2 with the XBOX layout now. My Switch 2 should be arriving tomorrow.

    • +1

There is a switch edition one which isn't on sale

      • Thabks ill wait for that

    • With the latest firmware it does but only if you plug the dongle in to the dock/switch.

Otherwise as the others said you have to buy the “Bluetooth” version not wireless if you don’t want to use the dongle.

I just leave the dongle in my switch dock

      • Do you know if there any negative or perceived difference about leaving the dongle there and using this controller, compared to the Bluetooth version?

        • +1

Apart from the mislabeled buttons not sure. You have to hold “Y” when powering on too which you probably don’t have to do with the switch version. But otherwise seems to work fine. Gyro etc all work

    • Nope, they deliberately made those different versions.

    • I have two of these (USB 2.4G models), I can confirm they work on Switch 2 (driver update needed first to the dongle and controller)

      • Can you connect both with one USB c port?

        • Nah, you need to plug in both USB dongles. (Switch 2 has 2 USB ports)

  • +1

Is this the good one? I'm always confused about which model it is.

Imo the cyclone 2 is an equivalent good deal and would be my recommendation.

Here's the review from retro game corps that has an opinion at the end.

    https://youtu.be/gGZQIhJeCuE

    • +1

agree cyclone 2 seems the pick right now on awesome/price ratio . lots of well reviewed controllers around at the moment with good features and tmr/hall for triggers and joysticks, heaps of talk on reddit r/controller about gamesir, flydigi etc. i loved the 8bitdo ultimate 1 while i had it but disappointed about longevity - joystick is glitching out after 1.5yrs despite it being hall effect, triggers have a known mechanical failure that only gives you 1-2 years max and mine is starting to fail - not sure i want to go with them again for the ultimate 2

      • Yeah I dont understand this. Last OZB post about a year or more ago, I saw a post for the 8bitdo ultimate bluetooth. I bought one and used for gaming as you do becasue it had "hall effect" which my playstation 5 controllers were barely getting 12 months out of - some of them 3 months. Anyway, i was researching and apparently hall effect dont have this problem. Well my contoller is used lightly, probably has the equivalent to a single school holidays worth of gaming on it.. and I get the odd "screen aims upwards instantly" every few games..

Is the hall effect tech bullshit, or is it just these 8bitdo'nts?

        • +1

          probably just a bad unit.

    • +1

I have both, cyclone 2 controller and dock feel cheap in comparison to this controller this also has far better latency

I would recommend getting this one over cyclone wont be disappointed

      heres the tests for latency
      https://gamepadla.com/gamesir-cyclone-2.html
      https://gamepadla.com/8bitdo-ultimate-2-wireless-controller.…

      TLDR latency
      xinput buttons 2.4ghz
      cyclone 2:26.74ms average
      8bitdo U2 wireless:11.61ms average

      • +1

        Xinput button 2.4ghz- average

        Cyclone - 7.83ms
        8bit u2 - 3.95ms

Are we seeing different values from the same site?

        • oops mine is stick latency can't edit it now.

still both stick and buttons are way better
          build quality better as well

cylone wins on switch bluetooth latency vs the bluetooth version

I really wanted to like the cyclone since I spent like $90 on it

          • +1

@bread69: I've the Cyclone 2, and I absolutely love it…. except one major drawback that I didn't even know was a thing (having come from a Gulikit Kong that didn't have this problem).
You can't use Xinput on Bluetooth, you have to use Xinput via the wifi dongle, or via wired with the cable.

And for me, playing on a couch about ~4 metres away from a projector screen, it was at the absolute limits of the wifi range and regularly glitched out and missed entire inputs.

So, I'm basically stuck using Bluetooth (PS4 input), which doesn't support Xinput, which is kinda shit.

I think this was due to some licensing costs or something that MS were charging - not 100% sure on that though.

            • @Deviner: Get a usb extender cable for the dongle.

              • @TightLikeThisx: I have it plugged into the top slot of a handheld, sitting right on the edge of a TV cabinet… so perfect line of sight and only maybe 3+ metres distance.
There's nothing between the couch and the dongle, so only thing I could do with a usb extender would be to leave it sitting in the middle of the floor which is a bit crap.
It'd probably work but it's not great.

                • +1

@Deviner: It sound's like you have interference with the 2.4Ghz signal.

So many things can interfere with it e.g. fridges, microwaves etc.

                  • @TightLikeThisx: Bit of a late reply but that's actually a really good point - thanks!
I haven't thought about wifi interference in absolutely years, but I do have a lot of random IoT crap on 2.4ghz nowadays, so I wonder…

      • +2

I have both as well but prefer the Cyclone 2 despite the drawbacks you mentioned.
I prefer the shape of the Cyclone (angled grips), the feel of the joysticks and mechanical switch buttons. This part is probably personal preference. Also works perfectly with my Switch1 where the 8bitdo doesn't.
I don't really notice the latency difference but I don't play competitive games with it. Another drawback is it definitely has worse battery life than the 8bitdo which doesn't bother me as much.

  • Does this make a loud knocking/vibrating noise when the motors are are vibrating?

I've got the ultimate 1 and it makes a loud vibrating/knocking noise during the more intensive rumble effects.

    • I seem to remember complaining about the Ultimate somewhere along this line about 2 years ago?

Yes, here it is, quite close to exactly 2 years ago.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14048841/redir

Try what I did and disable the left vibration motor using the software, and see if that makes it better for you.

      • Awesome! Thanks for the response.

Do you know if the ultimate 2 has this issue also? Because it does, it's would put me off from purchasing it.

        • I've found the exact same thing with the loud and rough left vibration motors across:

          • 8bitdo Pro 2
          • 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth (the original version for Switch with hall effect sticks)
          • 8bitdo Ultimate 2.4g (the updated version with hall effect sticks)

So at this point, I would conclude that it's an intentional design thing, so likely found on the Ultimate 2 as well.

Presumably the asymetrical vibration motors is so that games can have strong rumble coming from the left motor, while more subtle rumble coming from the right motor. But in practice, in both Switch and PC games, anything that triggers a vibration just has the left motor going noisily berserk and completely overpowering the right motor.

          • @pj1351: Thanks for the thorough info!

I'm going pass on any 8 bit do controllers. I find the rattling noise it makes, really distracting while playing a game.

I've been playing space marine 2, and half the time I just hear the controller rattling away. I'll probably try turning it down to see if it helps.

  • Are you able to swap the A and B buttons if you intend to use this with Switch 2 and prefer the Nintendo layout?

    • Yes, based on reviews you can change the layout as you want (not physically remove or swap the buttons, but what they do).

      • I meant switching the physical buttons. Some devices like Chinese Android-based emulation handhelds include extra buttons for this. Xbox layout will annoy me to no end if I bought this for Switch 2.

        • How often are you looking at the buttons while playing? Honest question.

          • @stratbargain: Often enough that it'll bug me looking down at it. I'll just wait on a sale for the other version.

          • @stratbargain: Lol, agree. Takes a few seconds to remember xy top, ab bottom. Never look again. Unlike a playstation controller which has no logical order in the placement of the shapes and you might have to look down once in a while.

            • +2

              @Notatightass:

Unlike a playstation controller which has no logical order in the placement of the shapes and you might have to look down once in a while.

              ◯ = 1 line = A = "Accept"/"Yes" in Nintendo and PlayStation JP (pre-PS5) configuration.
              ✕ = 2 lines = B = "Back"/"No" in Nintendo and PlayStation JP (pre-PS5) configuration.
              △ = 3 lines = X.
              □ = 4 lines = Y.

The Western version of the PlayStation makes it more confusing by flipping ◯ and ✕. Then beginning with the PS5, they forced the flipped configuration onto the Japanese player base.

              • @pj1351: Ok, wow. My mind is slightly blown. I never thought of the shapes based on how many lines they are comprised of. Also, in the Japanese configuration, it would count 1-4 anti-clockwise.

                • @Notatightass: The PlayStation button placement is the same for JP and the West (◯ on the right, ✕ is down, △ is up, □ is left).

It's what ◯ and ✕ does that got swapped (and then eventually the swap was forced onto JP players).

Just get the Bluetooth Model (which has Ninten button layout) is you just intend to use it for the Switch/Switch 2.

  • Is this compatible with PS4?

  • -1

Picked up the gamesir cyclone 2, should I have waited for this?

  • I'm looking for a not too expensive controller for cloud gaming on my TV. Any recommendations? I'm by all means not a high end level player

  • Thanks for the alert, have had a black wireless bluetooth controller for 2 years. I've now ordered the purple wireless bluetooth 2. Was $71.96, used the $20 off app promo code and had $10.01 left on a gift card. $41.95 is a great deal :P

  • +4

I collect a bunch on game controller and have most of the recommended ones in the market including this and ultimate 1. Alot of people have also mentioned cyclone 2 which is also have.

In my opinion ultimate 2 has so much potential but ultimately falls short in alot of key areas. The biggest problem is the ergonomics, controller is very small making it uncomfortable over longer sessions

The extra shoulder bumpers are also poorly placed they are too recessed in making it difficult to quickly hit those buttons. Razer wolverine placement of those extra shoulder buttons are really goated at this point along with the switches they use.

Lastly the analogue triggers and sticks have a odd stiffness to them which I personally do not like.

I own probably about 20+ controllers, I would look into the Flydigi Vadar 4 Pro (do not get the dock it's shit). I would say that controller is far ahead of most in the current market in terms of value, features and performance.

    • I'll look into the Vadar 4 Pro (just did a quick read up on it) the NEXT time I need a new controller. My first 8bitdo has served me well - for mine the controller suits me not too big not too small. It gives me the Nintendo Pro controller type feeling when using it.

    • Does the ultimate 2 rattle when doing it rumble function? Ultimate 1 does it and its very distracting.

  • Sorry for the silly question, but why not an Xbox controller? Isn’t the same price or even cheaper?

    • +3

These have gyroscopic motion controls, Switch and Switch 2 support, magnetic joysticks that won't degrade and drift like Xbox ones will, programmable macros, a turbo mode, two bonus paddle buttons on the back that you can assign to whatever you want, two extra R4/L4 buttons, fancy trigger buttons that can toggle between linear and non-linear modes, a charging dock, a low-lag 2.4GHz mode on PC, and can be switched between Xinput, Dinput and Switch input modes (Xbox ones only support Xinput).

The downsides: Xbox controllers are the most reliable "it just works" controller for PC, some people prefer the ergonomics of one or the other based on personal taste, and Xbox controllers can be purchased in custom colours and patterns and so on which makes for nice gifts.

  • Hi, Is this compatible with steam deck? Thanks

  • +2

Discount on the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth (White) - 12%, then stack the 5% Payto or NAB Card for $10 off.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/8BitDo-Bluetooth-Controller-Joysti…

  • I use the flydigi apex 4 controller I picked up for about 105 bucks on aliexpress during a sale. It is hands down the best pro controller I have ever used. I get it to work on an xbox with the brook sb3 dongle. I believe it also works with switch with no dongle and of course it works with pc. I would highly recommend the apex 4 to anyone considering a new controller. It is not all that pretty but it plays like a dream.

    FYI re Switch 2

Controller arrived today. Updated both controller and dongle and its working.

As per reddit link above on the main deal description and Reddit user lelowdias:
First, connect it to the PC and check if the firmware is up to date.

    Controller v1.06

    Dongle v1.04

After that, I managed to do it like this:

Dongle connected to the top USB-C port of the Switch 2, while it was in the dock.

    Controller in 2.4G mode.

Turn it on by holding Y + the power button (the round button with a heart in the middle).

I connected the dongle to the controller dock, and connected the controller dock to the Switch 2 — and it worked too!

Gyro and rumble work perfectly. The only 'problem' so far is that every time I turn on the controller I need to hold Y + power. And I haven’t found a way to turn on the console with the controller yet — I need to turn on the console first and then the controller. Other than that, everything is perfect.

  • I got my 8Bitdo Ultimate 2 Wireless controller today. Looks and feels fancy, too bad the one that I was given has a defective right analog stick (doesn't register when you click/press down on it). It wouldn't annoy me so much if I didn't play games that required the stick to be pressed down on a consistent basis, it still swivels around properly… it just doesn't click down correctly.

Hope my returns process goes better than the one I did in January (was given a bluray of a completely different movie instead of Top Gun 1/2 4K. I was promised to be able to re-purchase it at the same price after the refund….. but nope if I wanted it again I had to buy it at full price), le sigh.
