Looking for a Decent External CD/DVD Burner

Need to get an external CD/DVD burner for my PC as I don't have one on my desktop. Looking for something that's reliable for burning audio CDs. Don't want a cheap unreliable one but don't want to spend heaps on it as I'll only need to use it every so often.

Can anyone recommend a reliable, mid range one?

Cheers

Most issues are to do with comparability between the burner and the media.

Burnt CD's do NOT will in most cases suffer from bit rot after years, unless you buy archive quality media.

      What?

        Do not touch -Willly

        Hmm. Good advice!

    • comparability between the burner and the media.

burners and media a very different in almost every way…

Aw can't help you, I mostly used to buy cheaper ones from MSY etc. But I miss burning CDs/DVDs. Good times.

        Yes, 9-track

        • 9-track was anything but simple

        Buffer underrun.

        • +1

I set up a older PC with no software other than Windows (98?) and Nero to avoid Buffer underruns.

CD-Rs were expensive back then too!

The BURN Proof CD-R drives were amazing in comparison lol

I recon I paid like $600 for the drive. Should have bought CSL shares instead.

    • Great song!

I also loved Signing Emo … and it’s sequel Signing Dubstep

If Pioneer or Samsung, LG (still) make them, go down that route. Or better. Your best bet is a PC parts place with high sales point and good reputation.
Stick with name brands. It may look ugly but you could also use and internal one plumbed into the guts of the PC.

    EDIT>

I would also consider having the ability to burn DVDs and Blurays with the unit you get. Just in case.

    • +1

OP also said CD/DVD burner … NOT BLU-RAY.

hence the difference in price - in that article that you linked to.
      first few were BLU-RAY burners.

      • +1

        which is why I said>

I would also considerhaving the ability to burn DVDs and Blurays with the unit you get. Just in case.

        'just in case'

The link was just a random hit to show what brand names are up there

        • +1

I actually own a blu-ray burner from many years ago …
IMO === waste of money … would never buy again.

          I prob only burnt 4-5 blu-rays … rest were all DVD's/CDr's.
has the landscape changed ? I think not !!!

as I said a BLU-RAY burner == waste of money … unless OP has a proper use case for it.

          • +1

@simplystu: Yeah but your landscape is not everyone else's.

OPs use case may change. And having a more universal burner means flexibilit.
And the price will never be going down.Nor will the quality ever be going up. Unless of course the peksy landscape has changed.

        • +1

          also - worth noting …

that article you linked to == was posted on Jul 11, 2012.

          just saying.

          • @simplystu: Desperate for the higher ground ? It's all yours.Enjoy.

            • @Protractor: just because you pulled some RANDOM search result from google … to try to PROVE your point.
              yet you got found out.

              • -3

@simplystu: Aw shucks, Miss Marple strikes again.

Sorry the point about saving money, flexibility and quality tech offended you.

                • @Protractor: your point about saving money - didn't offend me one bit … but trying to miskew the thread on a different path == wrong.

atleast I gave OP proper/correct information + guidance (see my initial reply to OP) …
Yet - you tried to lead OP down garden path of BLU-RAY burners.

As I said in the msg … what is OP's intended case? … then we ALL can help them as to what type of burner to buy.

                  • @simplystu: You can't read. I said consider. No arm twisting involved. You're more invested than the OP is, mate

                    • +6

@Protractor: I like how you two guy wrote a novel together but couldn't recommend me a cd burner. Lol.

                      • -4

                        @hamsammich: I recommended several,genius.

                        Pioneer or Samsung, LG
                        Plus 'name brands'
Maybe you should pay attention next time you ask for easily googled advice.

  • @hamsammich …
what is your intended use case for this ???

that will really emphasise as to price range + what TYPE of burner you need.

    • Mostly to make audio CDs. But would also to make data DVDs to back some files up when I need to.

      • +1

        Mostly to make audio CDs.

        No hate, genuine question:

Why? What advantage and or situation would make this necessary or convenient in 2025?

        Again,
        Genuinely curious lol

        • +1

Can't be that crazy when people are out here spending $$ on vinyl.

          • @smartazz104: Vinyl is seen as collectible and artsy.

Unless we have reached an age where cds are becoming that hipster thing to do? Lol

            • -1

@El cheepo: Quality audio CDs, with the right artists (especially with DDD format ) will be collectors items going fwd. Especially as more and more never to be released again albums, start to disappear. Discogs is one site that deals in CD collections / collectors. It's not a huge market, but it's a savvy one.CDs will have their day again. For those who care for physical copies of classics.
People collect stamps too. Who knew.

              • @Protractor: Quality and or collectable cds are genuine cds, not burned copies with generic cases.

No one is collecting knock offs.

People collect stamps too. Who knew.

I’ll be sure to send them my hand drawn pics and photos of stamps for them to add to their collection.

                FTFY
If you’re gonna make an argument, make it good lol.

                • -2

@El cheepo: Mate you are the one who said
Vinyl is seen as collectable and artsy.

All I did was add that so are certain quality CDs, did I say burned ones?
If you're going to humiliate yourself, don't drag me into it.

                  • @Protractor: Brother…

All I did was add that so are certain quality CDs, did I say burned ones?

In a conversation about what they intended to use the burned cds for.
Then followed up with a irrelevant snide remark about people collecting stamps…

I can explain it to you, but I can’t understand it for you…

I miss good banter with witty folk.
                    This is just drivel.

Until we meet again xox 😂

                    • @El cheepo:

In a conversation about what they intended to use the burned cds for.

Where you willingly dragged vinyl LPs into it, as collectable & artsy.

I also miss good banter. And good memories.

                      .

                      • @Protractor:

Where you willingly dragged vinyl LPs into it, as collectable & artsy.

While i appreciate the cherry picking parts of comments, you will find it was actually smartazz104 that referenced or “willingly dragged” vinyls in to the conversation.

I gave my opinion on why vinyls and burnt cds differ in this situation.
You gave some drivel pointless reply.
                        And finally, here we are.
                        More drivel 😂

                        To quote an unknown source:

If you're going to humiliate yourself, don't drag me into it.

By all means carry on your defence though 😂

                        Side note:
Good luck finding what you are after OP.
I hope these pointless comments boost your threads viewings and find you someone to help.

                        • @El cheepo: Your words> (nobody else's)
Vinyl is seen as collectible (sic) and artsy

Which part of that you deny is up to your daily limit of blatant distortions.
But by all means keep digging.

                          • @Protractor: Let my words sink in:

I can explain it to you, but I can’t understand it for you

                            And maybe apply your own

If you're going to humiliate yourself, don't drag me into it.

But tbh, i have nothing better to do. So by all means carry on 😂

                            • @El cheepo: Your words can't sink in mate. You deny even saying them, in the first place. You don't even own your own material. Shape shifting , but minus the integrity.

                              • @Protractor: Im seriously wondering if English is not your first language.

                                I said:

So not sure where you are getting this drivel from:

You deny even saying them, in the first place.

Please show where i deny it 😂

You don't even own your own material.

Never claimed to own anything or every saying in existence.

But please clutch at semantics whilst clutching them straws 😂

                                • @El cheepo: You say drivel a lot in amongst the pointless abandonment of your own disowning of your own words. I care not that you don't have the faith in the stuff you regurgitate. But your like a camp dog. Ypu keep re-eating it, and throwing it all up again, and rinse and repeat. Mate, if ppl respons specifically to tha actual words you wrote …

                                  Never mind, you're beyond rescue.

                                    Lol

                                    • @El cheepo: You've even given up on yourself multiple times in a row. A non believer in your own words. A self debater.

                                      • @Protractor: At this point are you just trying to have the last word?

What ever the case, I’m having a grand old time winding you up.
Thanks for the evenings entertainment 😂

        • For friends.

          • @hamsammich: That raises more questions,
Why are you giving friends cds and what advantages or need is there for that?

Are you making some mixtapes or something? Do they not own a phone or have access to internet?

Again, 100% serious and curious lol

  • Liteon were the best back in the day if you needed key decryption for Sony games and other things sold on CD. These days, why would you need a burner?

  • I bought a super cheap one from AliExpress like 6 years ago… still working fine.
I think the technology has moved on so much there's really nothing needing to be very special about them anymore (i.e. a brand name won't be much better than any other brand).

I think your main issue would be getting high quality DVD-Rs to burn and keep for a really long time without suffering deterioration.
You're probably better off looking into cloud storage services for long term storage of things, and for really important things, having a local HDD backup.
A 4GB DVD won't hold much compared to a 4TB HDD… and you can get two / three 4TB HDDs to have significantly more robust online consistency and backup checks (RAID).

  • I want one in a proper box that keeps it up off the desk, not one of those tiny ones that skate around all over the place.

  • Decent External CD/DVD Burner

    For time travel?

  • Op, if you are wanting audio CDs to play in an older car, you can buy a Bluetooth device that will transmit music from your phone through the car radio. They are much cheaper than a CD/DVD burner ~ $15.

    • No, I'm actually looking for a cd/dvd burner

      • What about an aux cable and a USB C/Lightning to aux adapter?

  • +1

Don't over think it you can buy ones from jbhi, officeworks or elsewhere something like this should be alright,

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-slim-portable-dvd-wr…

$59 You just need to double check what disc formats it will burn for you. They also have more expensive ones just check a few reviews find the one right for your budget and burning needs dont overthink it.

If you want a little project though 20 plus years ago i built my own it wasn't hard got a 5.25 pc optical drive (you can pick a good reviewed drive this way) put it in a external enclosure if i can do it anyone can. I actually pulled it out of storage couple months ago my wife wanted music on cd for her mid life crisis convertible.
