There is no manual in the box. But a soft copy can be downloaded from here:
    http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwide/downloadCenter.do?meth…

  • Got one from Marouba Junction Coles. Great bargain.

  • Does this handset take a micro SIM?

My Huawei x1 was my backup but I would prefer to have something more upto date.

    • +1

      No, normal SIM.

      • hmmmm might look into the adapters on ebay then.

        thanks.

  • got one today from local coles ( reserved last night )

pretty impressed for the sub $50 phone.

  • Picked one up this morning and only managed to put the sim card in a couple of hours ago. I put a sim card from the "Three" network in and it worked fine. It seems that it wasn't networked locked.

Before you go and purchase an unlock code, try your sim card first. It may just work.

    Hope this helps!

    • hope not just purchased unlock code :) thanks for the info will try tonight

      • The 2 I bought this morning had to be unlocked … sounds like very good advise and to check first !
There maybe some lucky buyers out there.

        • Just put in a Voda reseller sim and it asked me for sim unlock pin :(

      • just tried didnt work …

  • FYI … Compare LG P690 & Huawei Ascend Y201 here (roughly).
    http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4043&idPhone2=…

Was tempted but there does not seem enough difference between them apart from the os ver and the supposed? data speed. Very happy with our LG P690s anyway… they're a gem.

    • the big points are:

OS version the LG is still running 2.3.X
the avaliable memory as this could kill it for some people as it will limit the amount of apps OR app and not all apps like moving to the sd card.
and the data transfer rate is very low but if you cna deal with it then its ok i guess.

  • 2500 Flybuys didn't load up on my account. WTF?

    • You have to wait up to 28 days for them to be credited AND you must activate the included sim card.

      • Are u sure have to activate the sim? How can they know?

        • Easy to activate do it online, put in some details and your done!
Don't need to pay anything unless you intend to use it as you will then need to purchase credit.

Great phone for $49. ICS, half-VGA and 4GB of flash storage. Whats missing?
    - camera is poor. fixed focus and no LED flash.
    - keyboard is difficult. Maybe I'll get used to it, but am making lots more typing errors than on other phones, and related:
    - multi-touch does not really work. It tries, but fails. You need to go into the settings in Maps and enable the zoom buttons.
    - no root available yet

But hey - $49 for ICS, a decent screen, and more than 512MB of flash-storage!

Best Android bargain since the Acer Liquid MT?

And BTW, you can take incoming calls on the Telstra SIM without activating it.

    • have you tried swype (beta).

it is not on the play store BUT can be DL'ed from site.

    • How is the internal storage? Hopefully there should be at least 1GB for apps.

      • They said 4GB internal storage and no SD Card comes with it but haven't check mine yet after initial setup.

      • No, it is formatted with about 0.5GB free for apps in /data, and 2GB as /mnt/sdcard for music, photos etc.
Still, a lot better than my last Android device which had 512MB total.

I will try swype, thanks! Am used to it on N9 and Samsung.

Oddly, pinch-zoom seems to work OK in Chrome (web), but not in Maps. Are others seeing this?
For further technical discussion, see Whirlpool.

    • multi-touch does not really work.

This is a bug in the current version of Maps. Reverting to factory version solved the problem.

The Acer Liquid Metal is on its own for the time at the 128 bucks it was going for. I don't think there's anything that's cone close. At the end of the day this is maybe a $100 phone going for $50, the Acer felt like a $400 phone going for 128.

the zte t22/telstra urbane was a better deal than this @75 IMO, but apparently no one has unlock codes for it yet. I don't think you can go past the 800x480 screen for that price

Very good phone for the price
    Picked-up mine yesterday
The built-in keyboard is bad however installed Swiftkey3 and problem solved.
    Camera is not good
But everything else is very good considering the price.

Anybody knows what's the best app to root this? Any 3rd party stable ROM like CM9?
    Thanks

    • I think no root available yet, I would just install another launcher and hide those bloatware.

  • Coles Chadstone (VIC) had one left, and I got that one. So far so good, can't complain for $49.

  • Don't forget to use your ING Direct Visa paywave for an extra 5% discount. All Coles stores have Paywave-enabled terminals.

  • Anyone know what I can do with the $10 credit? Unlikely to use it for calls/txts before the Vaya sim I ordered arrives.

    • transfer the $10 credit to someone using Telstra… like me ! :)

      • no worries, i can do that , how do i do that ?

on optus .. can i do without registering my details with telstra?

        • activate the card with registering details

          1. to get the 2500 flybuys
          2. u can transfer your $10 credit to any other Telstra with $0.25 credit, so u can transfer $9 max because must be whole number after $0.25 detuct..
      • I can't even drive the phone (ex-iphone) so the chances of me figuring out how to transfer credit are looking slim!

Following recommendation from whirlpool, I purchased an unlock code from http://ebay.nckserver.com/page/1007/home.html for USD5.59 and it worked

took 18hours and email came through. worked no problems

    • Me too received no problem .

    • Ditto. It came through in about 12-14 hours for me worked without a hitch.

    • likewise, tho 24hours

    • Thanks. He sent me the codes the following day (technically the same day, I requested at 00:13). Pretty good bargain.

  • I saw the flybuys post said have to activate the Telstra sim but how can they know which flybuys is related?

  • I bought mine from Coles World Square and unlocked successfully from code via ebay seller.
It's a good phone, quite fast and ample for simple stuff too. :)
Only 2 aspects which are negative in a way is the camera quality is not good (and without flash) and the screen res is a little below par… I'd rate it an 8 out of 10.

    • Where in the store were the mobiles located ? I did a quick search and I couldn't see any phones.

  • In case anyone was still after this phone - I picked up two from Leichardt and there was quite a few left they said. Burwood has ordered new stock expected to arrive tomorrow or Saturday.

  • Hey all, I picked up an extra one for my dad but he didn't want it - was happy with his Huawei X3. Anyone interested? Can private message me. Thanks.

    • Hey all, happy to take $60 for it, $49.50 for the phone, $8 for parcel post, and $2.50 for my travel to the post office!

      • 2.50 for your travel to the post office!

        oic what you did there!

        • bus fare ?

        • rounded it off to make it easier…

(probably better off waiting for the deal to finish then sell it to someone who missed out)

        • Hey that's a good idea, will do.

  • Just picked one up from bondi junction, reserved 1 of the 2 available so there might be one left. None left at burwood leichhardt and Broadway

  • Anyone checked their flybuys point? Updated it yet?

  • They have some in Ipswich. I grabbed one after Vodafone said it'll take a Month to repair my 5 week old phone.

  • Anyone know the lastest date to activate to claim the 2500 points?? i cant find any information about it

    • You mean activate the Telstra SIM? How can flybuys know you have activate it or not?

      • They could cross-reference the flybuys card you swiped at the POS with your SIM serial on the registration form.

  • has anyone try to play video on this phone? i try to play movies(avi file) but didnot work.

    • Download MX Player from the Play store. It will play most videos.

  • Any stock in Brisbane?.. Been to two stores don't have it.. :

    • +1

Don't know where you live, but Sunnybank Coles had 3 left (perhaps more locked away, but there were 3 on top of a cabinet with a sign proudly announcing that the price was 1/2 of what it had been) as of late Thursday. You could phone them to find out if they have any left.

  • just got one on coles world square

I saw a guy bought one too!

  • Anybody received the flybuys point yet?

    • Activated on about the 25th January. Got my January points update today but the points haven't shown up yet. Takes about 28 days I think it said on advert so hopefully see them in a week or two.

  • No points yet for me

  • The sale is on again! I just bought the phone today!

  • what is cheapest unlock for phone?

  • Got one of these suckers to counter the sudden death of my s3 and telstra not having any loan phones. They are not a bad little unit.

  • 2500 bonus flybuys points appeared in the account today. I bought the phone on January 29th.

  • Contacted fellow ozbargainer Bagman, who provided unlock code for $5. What a star! Look him up. He so cheap and easy ;-) love this site!

  • Received 2500 points and also the deal is up again this week.

  • i recommend ozbargainer Bagman to get an unlock code
just unlocked my phone for 5$ :D

  • I think this is now back to $99?

    Shame I missed it..

  • It's a fantastic gadget to play with. Certainly it proofed to exceed your expectation for this price range.
I think the deal expired at Coles but it will come back again.

  • Can anyone confirm if they received 5000 points?

  • still haventy got points in my flybuy statements :(

  • Does anyone know if you can still get this phone at Coles? I dont mind paying full price or $99 for it… Still decent at that price. Just need one ASAP! Anyone seen them at Coles lately?

    • see houpaeng post above…
