  • good post. bought one when it was $79. the only thing is the keyboard on screen. so hard to type correctly. tried all possible keyboard apps. still the same.

    • Bet you haven't tried Graffiti. Worth it if you have some patience, IMO :-)

    • Is this the 'pro' version or the regular one? Or is there only pro in Australia?

    • Does anyone know this phone uses a normal sim or a micro sim? I can’t find it on the internet. GSMARENA says: SIM :YES

      • +1

        normal sim.

    • thought i would post here that despite the chat in the old thread, it sees voda and optus 2g just fine so clearly has quad band 2g

  • +1

Thanks good for the kids and 850/2100 3G just fit my Voda reseller prepaid.

Because it is Telstra I think it is 850/2100 instead of gsmarena mentioned.

BTW what did I say for you to thanks me… lol .

Please also mention will start on 23Jan.

  • If I unlock the phone will it become quad/quint-band 3g?

  • I have one. I lose/break phones with alarming regularity. It is the most frustrating phone I have owned since I was using a circa-2005 Windows phone. Do not buy this phone if you value your sanity.

    • +4

Although it HAS survived being thrown across a room at least three times. This survivability may be a selling point to a potential buyer..

      • Anger Managment issuies mate?

    • It's extremely cheap for a base level android phone. It does what you need it to do.

I didn't find it frustrating after over a month's worth of usage. I found it very functional.

  • Y201 has many version, this telstra one is scratch resistant. 850MHz 3G

  • +4

It's a good price for a 800mhz CPU phone. No way you can find a phone for that price that is as speedy or has 512MB RAM.

    • Good deal for a games/music/video/web player for the kids?

  • Does this unlock work?

    http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f719/some-body-plz-give-me-f…

    Seems to be free.

    • i just had a read and here
      http://sigmakey.com/en/Sigma-Help/Qualcomm-Manual.html#huawe…
      it says:
"Please note that unlock works with factory firmware only."
has this phone a factory firmware? or some telstra custom?

      was linked from the forum.

BUT if it works im goin to get one too.

    • I guess you need to buy SigmaKey Unlook tool first.

  • Thought it was a bargain at $79. At $49, I'm trying to make up excuses to get another one.

But seriously, it's a zippy little phone though like one of the posters above, I'm searching for a keyboard that works well. The inbuilt one and swiftkey make me want to hurl the phone across the room.

    Might give Kii a go.

  • how much user available storage for apps? only other thing, bought a few of the LG (590s?) when they had them on special…you can only install a few apps before they run out of space. (the ones that cant be moved to SD)

ended up getting the razr, but still not a great deal of RAM on that either.

    • +1

      LinkSD can fix that problem.

      • +1 but have to root the phone first.

Is ICS a bit difference in handling apps? I heard it default to install it on SD Card.

I have Galaxy Nexus without SD card slot so not very sure.

  • How would you guys say this compares to the Telstra Uno / ZTE-T12? Contemplating giving the T12 to my brother and grabbing one of these for myself, mainly for the screen size and ICS. I only need a low-end phone.

I use the Optus network but I'd rarely use data, not to mention that the T12 is also 850/2100 for 3G.

    • Did you manage to unlock the Uno (ZTE-T12) from a 3rd party?

      • +1

Yeah, YYY offered to do it for just under $15, the previously cheapest price I could find.

  • +1

4GB RAM - wow! I'm getting one right away!

    • +3

ha ha …. should be 512MB Ram and 4GB Internal Storage.

  • Great deal!

Can anyone recommend a cheap low-data plan (prepaid preferred, but fine with pay monthly if need be) that I could give to my mum to use?

    • -2

Because this phone is 850/2100 you better get voda prepaid reseller like Kiss Mobile.

Otherwise there are a lot if the phone support Optus 900/2100 like Live Connected, TPG, etc.

      • Not liveconnected anymore.

Try vaya ($7/month) or PlanetISP (Free just pay for calls)

        • OP wants data plan…

Vaya is on Optus network, so 850 not supported
PlanetISP should be fine however its Vodafone Network

        • I've been using a 850/2100 phone for years on the Optus network. You have to be in a metro area though.

        • Thanks guys, I'll look into Vaya and PlanetISP.

I hope it will be enough, knowing mum, she'll probably only be making 2 or 3 calls every week, will not text, and will use less than 20 mbs of data every month.

        • PlanetISP has no data though if you use Voda, but has $2.50/mb if you use Telstra (can choose the network).

Its really only good for people who don't really use their phone to make heaps of calls and would otherwise buy a $30 365/day expiry from a prepaid network. Great for the older parents/grandparents who wouldn't make more than $5 of calls a year :P

Otherwise Vaya for $7 (more than she can prob use) or TPG $1/month (http://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/pay-as-you-go) sounds like the way to go for you.

    • +1

Lycamobile prepaid. $10 recharge. Does not expire.
Calls to landline 0c per minute + 29c flagfall.
Calls to mobile 6c per minute + 29c flagfall.
Calls to lycamobile 0c per minute + 0c flagfall.
      SMS 15c
Data 15c per MB (Telstra 2g network)
All on Telstra network so no need to unlock phone.

      • 2G network = useless.

        • For usage of 20MB per month, it will be fine.

    • TPG

  • I'd get one of these to try on optus but I've never tried to wing it with 850/2100 before - data wouldn't be a huge priority for the phone..

  • +3

If you have a flybuys card, you will get 2500 flybuys point for buying this phone.

    2000 points worth for $10

which bring this phone $49 + $10 coles credit :)

  • +1

Flybuys sent an email 90 minutes ago, with an offer to get 2500 Flybuys points when purchasing the phone ($12.50 cash equivalent bacb, making it $36.50)

    See it here: https://www.flybuys.com.au/flybuys/content/EDMhub/CTM/edm_02…

You will need to activate the deal in your own personal email though.

*SORRY double post, didn't see the post above.

    • I just clicked the activate link and it told me I activated successfully. But I haven't purchased the phone. What's happening?

      • +1

Haha newguy. Basically, if you do not activate 'the special', then if you were to purchase the special, you would not receive the bonus points. If you 'activate' and then buy, you get the points. Its just a way for them them to retain you in their data base for emails. Hope that explains it

      • You now need to purchase the phone using the same flybuys card and the system will do the rest.

  • +1

Compared to the LGoptimus p690 that Coles had for $49 last year how does this compare?
I release its ICS, 4gb memory and the screen is slightly larger.

Phone will just be used for the strava app which requires GPS
The lg can take ages to get a lock and sometimes won't at all.
Will also be running power amp music app on it.

    • I own the optimus spirit p690 and will have a look in the testra shop near me this morning to see if they have the y201 avail to test. Will let you know. Specs seem very Similar with just android 2.3 versus 4 on the y201. I havent had any probs with gps on lg. Wont be able to test it this morning at telstra though.

      • GPS works fine on both our LG P690's (running Sygic mapping)

    • See my post above. The store I went only had the latest models on display, so no luck there. In retrospect I dont really understand gps so dont take my word for the lg being any good.

      • funny thing was i bought two of these phones one the gps was quite quick and worked, other one took forever/had problems connecting… odd as they where exactly the same phone… (LGs)

biggest advantage will be the space availible as its the only reason im upgrading the wifes phone… well that and the camera which should also be much better. (end up getting her the razr - also has a decent sized screen - just waiting on the cover from the US before using it as i know she'll drop it!)

  • +2

Does this phone works with Kogan 3G sim without unlocking?

    • Should but I don't have one to test so maybe some else can let us know, but this is almost always the case

  • Do we actually need to activate the offer in email? It is in the catalogue and should be applying for every Flybuys card.

    • On the catalogue it did say you can swipe your flybuys membership card at the time of purchase.

  • +1

My sister needs a cheap phone, will this be fine with Vodafone?
    I've read mixed reports….

    • +1

yes it's fine, my wife is using it happily, better reception than my galaxy nexus…… not sure why

  • +1

Does anyone have a locked one available and can message me the IMEI ?
I might be able to get the unlock code … I just need one to test.

    • Cheers - let us know how it goes
I'm planning to purchase one tomorrow - can PM you if you want

      • +1

I have one reserved for tomorrow as well :) just thought someone might have one still locked from the last time they were on sale.
I can unlock the Huawei G300 by code, for a small fee of a server, but am not too sure about whether the unlock code I get will work for this particular model.

  • $7 to unlock using a program called "DC-Unlocker" https://www.dc-unlocker.com/buy/user_prices. I've used this program to unlock various 3G modem's and phones.

  • These cheap Android phones sure are a bargain. I'm using a spare one as a dash cam and gps tracker - added security for my car. Tempted to get this one.

    • Nice idea, the dash cam/logger. Are there any good apps for that? e.g. turn on the camera automatically when the charger turns on, or when you start moving? So you don't need to remember to start it.

    • What app do you use for this purpose?

      • +4

I was using a spy app so I could take a video with the screen off (I don't want attracting attention especially that my car does not have tinted windows). I created a couple or profiles in Tasker: run the app when car is started then another profile that shuts down the app when the car's ignition is totally switched off. The app natively shoots video straight away when started. Then the latest app update messed up everything so I looked for something else. Now I'm trialling DailyRoads Voyager. It's free and basically does the same thing, but adds GPS logging among other things a standalone dashcam does I suppose. It has a feature that natively starts shooting video once docked/plugged but it doesn't work so I still had to use Tasker.

I even bought a wide angle lens for mobile phones.

As for the Tracking app I use Cerebrus. The phone has to have a sim and data connection. TPG's $1/mo is perfect but the network just sucks. The phone has to have a reliable gps as well. The phone I'm using is weak in this department so it might not really be reliable as a tracking device.

It might be more trouble than it's worth, but I like DIYs. Every phone is different and will take a fair amount of trial and error/tinkering.

  • Went into Coles today and when i swiped my flybuys it still didnt give me a discount. Probably because i already used it to buy an LG Spirit before?

    • +1

      The deal only start tomorrow.

  • Just spotted this phone today for $49 at Woolworths in Casuarina - Darwin..

    • So its at Woolies as well as Colesies?

      • The Woolies deal was $79 and has now expired.

  • OP, should be 2500 flybuys point not 12500. Please correct.

  • Links on previous deals on this phone indicate that it wont work on the 2G 1800, is that true?

  • using an optus coverage will still work right?
because the phone also uses 2100?

    phone uses 850/2100
    optus uses 900/2100

    • +1

      Yes in Metro Area.

    • -1

Thats for 3G. The phone can still fall back to 900MHz 2G if needed, e.g. deep inside a building.

    • it wont use the 'YesG' aka dual band network, but will use all of optus's 2g and the rest of their 3g network, so it wont be great for more 'country' areas but most places you're fine
      https://www.optus.com.au/network/mobile/coverage

  • No Stock yet at Coles Chatswood Chase, NSW 8:55am :(

    • My wife bought one at Castle Hill and scanned flybuys on the spot.

  • +3

Can't believe no Ozbargainer has picked up that this is $49.50, not $49 as per title. I had to raid my kid's money box to raise the extra $0.50.

Seriously, any chance for stock Jelly Bean on this?

  • Sold out at the World Square, SYd store this morning @ 9:30am. Thanks Guys!

  • no stock at Rhodes Coles…
    100pm

    • I called up the Rhodes store yesterday to find they had none in stock.

  • Waked up 5:30am this morning by my son, after feeding him I thought it might worth to drop by my local coles which opens 6am, so did I. I was the first client and got one without any problem, they have three in total.

    • +1

      they have three in total.

For an advertised special!? Are there not laws about that?

      • Have no idea, and the lady said my local store don't normally stock all phones as it doesn't have a coles mobile outlet or something. She didn't even know if they got the phone in the cabinet before she actually unlocked it. Other big stores may have more stock I reckon.

        • my local had 1 on show on the tues afternoon, they putr it on hold for me, collected wed 4pm, none on show but was able to get my one

  • Can anyone confirm do we need to activate the deal through our own personal email before purchasing the phone?? to get the 2500 Flybuys points???

    Link posted by hamza23: https://www.flybuys.com.au/flybuys/content/EDMhub/CTM/edm_02…

Cause I didnt receive any email at all

But I do receive a voucher booklet from Flybuys yesterday with 2500 Extra Points for buying Telstra Prepaid Mobile.
Called Flybuys and the staff told me I can get 5000 Bonus Point together with the offer

5000 Bonus Point cash equivalent $25, making it $24.50!!

    • +1

Are you sure? I clicked on that link yesterday and also scanned flybuys on the spot.

But that link still show activiated even without login.

  • Only 1 in Coles Vermont South VIC (I dropped by yest on recce trip), which I bought 1/2 hr ago! I didn't pre-activate either as I didn't get any email from Coles. However, I did use a 2500 pt little perforated tear-off "card" received in the post yest, Coles staff scanned it. Dunno about how you can score 5000pts, but if you don't hurry to yr nearest store, you won't be getting this mobile deal, let alone Flybuys pts!

    • +1

2500 pts little perforated tear-off "card" + Original 2500 pts for buying this phone

  • Purchased this morning from an out-of-the-way Coles after calling ahead three stores. Activated and scanned my card for the flybuys too.

My local Woolworths had this in-stock but at $129. So that's an option for price matching but w/o the flybuys.

I hope to be able to switch in the Telstra SIM to use their Unmetered Services. This would need to work within the "recharge only period" as the $10 free credit only lasts 14 days.

    Now to unlock it…

    • Bought one, also at an 'out of the way' Coles today. They had maybe one more in stock.
Can you enlarge on the 'activation' for free?
I am intending to put in an existing Telstra SIM, which means forfeiting the 2500 flybuys (or 5000 or whatever). Is there a way to activate the SIM that came with the phone and pay nothing?
Then revert to using old SIM card?

      • "Activated" - Clicked the flybuys link in my email.

I wasn't aware that you needed to pay anything to activate the Telstra Prepaid SIM.

        ???

        • Sorry, my bad. Thought I had to add credit before activating SIM.
Can now see that I just need to activate it to receive flybuys.
          Thks
