The 4 bay has been much cheaper than tis in the past:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/qnap-ts-464

Ram can be upgraded easily for under $100 bucks.

    • I bought that for $623 in June 2023…

      • +1

        same here
upgraded to 2x16gb and 2x SSD for caching and runs great

        • I haven't upgraded and it still runs great…

Fan occasionally gets a bit loud though.

          • @jv: mine sits in a comms so I don't hear it

      • What do you use it for? Is the software capable to take backup of pictures from multiple devices at home? Just looking to replace google photos.

        • I use it to back up my cloud stuff, run my cctv storage and plex

    • does extra ram really make an noticeable improvement on performance?

      • I have multiple Vms and docker containers running and I must say it does make a difference.

why is qnap so damn expensive nowadays.
    I bought my qnap 2 bay under $200 7 years ago…

why is qnap so damn expensive nowadays.

      Inflation and weak Australian dollar…

    • +3

Nit just QNAP, Synology is the same. HDD too.
My Synology farm has appreciated over the last few years! (even after considering the inflation!)

      • HDD is cheap this year, I just bought a new Seagate 26TB for $250 USD.

        • +1

Well given this is OzBargain, search returned nothing even close to your price, and most of us are purchasing refurbished disks for more than this price, would you mind share your deal?

          • @tm001: It was here.
I just ask my overseas friend bring it back to me at a later date to avoid GST and shipping.
Seagate 20+TB HDD has been going on sale frequently this year.

  • How good is the backup app on this for Android?

    • -1

      Is that from personal experience?

    • Pretty good. Qfile pro backs up all my docs and images to the relevant folders as soon as they are created.

      • You can link certain folders in Qfile to certain folders in devices for backup and it goes into that automatically?

        • +1

Yes, You can have multiple jobs running all from different folders in the device to different folders on the NAS.

  • -2

750 for a 2 bay nas? Synology's half the price and they're usually the more expensive brand.

  • -3

2 bay for how much? even Synology isn't that expensive.

  • Everyone saying this is expensive needs to look at the specs of these vs the Synology EQUIVALENT. Comparing this to a Synology DS-225+/DS224+ would probably be fair.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, (and im sure I'll say it many more times in the future)
Unless you are extremely hard up for space, or you have 0 technical talent, (or your just plain loaded) just build your own!
half the price! - generally better or similar specs., better functionality with truenas.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16719282/redir

if you can install truenas you can do it!

i rekon I should do a youtube tutorial on it… anyone want to fund it? :D

Yes these are plug and play, yes, its a bit bigger, but its really not that much effort for 400 bux… add to that the case in the link is like 6x3.5 and 2xssd's
no to mention the flexility allows you to use these as a router/nvr/anything server. saving you more than the 400 bux.

People are paying for the convenience.

Hours and hours of trawling through videos on hardware, setup and config is no fun. Let alone having to rely on forums for support I case you need to troubleshoot.

People still buy pre-built computers and the software setup on that is a fraction of the work compared to setting up a bare metal nas

      • +1

Difference is pre built computers are not double the price of the parts.

If these were like for like (same as prebuild vs byo) , id not have a leg to stand on… According to that video, your looking at an afternoon to set it up. (Software wise)

If you only want nas functionality, probably less.

As I said, not plug and play, but paying double for convenience and limited functionality is a bit on the nose.

I think for an out of the box setup on the build your own nas. It's somewhat pretty easy…(Albe it not as easy as the pre built nas)

Until you want to start doing something complex(which the qnap probably doesn't support anyways… So not like you're losing anything)

    • genuine question, how safe is truenas compared to qnap software or is security is simply dependant on your anti-virus anti hack software and little common sense

      • +3

Ironically qnap had a history being hacked alot a few years ago lol.

As soon as you expose your nas to the internet then it becomes vulnerable.

        Strong passwords, VPN, tailscale

    • Consumer NAS isn't just about attaching a network drive on your PC to store files. Synology OS features absolutely shit on everything that you can roll on your own.

      • +3

Doubt they shit on anything you can roll out on your own. Id say that would heavily depends on the skill of the user.

Being easier to roll out those in build static features on the other hand …

        • Look in to synology mobile apps and backup suite.

          • @InternetExplorer: I'm using immich for photos, havent worried about the rest.

I remember reading something about being able to redirect native backups to a nas which was quite cool

            • @wisc: Tried that a few years ago but it was hell setting up and backups weren't reliable. How is it now?

I'm using synology atm and even on a slow nas its reliable in backing up my phone, nothing missed and it just does its thing in the background. AI face recognition and sorting is hopeless though, I use Google and a pixel 1 for that.

              • @krisspy: No real issues with back up, very straight forward… not using it for much else.

I probably should test the search functionality more, i was impressed at the small amount i used it.

    • Don’t even need to build your own these days to do truenas. A nuc of mostly any description plus a das will be cheaper than this NAS and be far more functional.

      • Yeah I've talked about using micro PC's in the above Link.

To put it bluntly, the price of nas is a ripoff, borderline scammy.

  • There is a great demand for custom built NAS products, I hope some of the companies that advertise gaming computer deals here would sell a decent reliable NAS.

    • Reliability mostly comes from the software really…and the drives you use.

They can build you the best nas running freenas/unraid/debian for cheap but the issue is these aren't turnkey solutions. You need to learn to set them up and initiate drives and trouble shoot should something go wrong. These don't have a pretty gui like windows either, you're using commands on these

You're on your own after you buy the system cause there's no way in hell they're gonna provide support for open source OS, I don't think anyone would wanna buy into something they have to learn to maintain. If you do have the know how to set one of these up, then chances are you don't need help sourcing parts and building it yourself.
