Surprised this hasn't been posted yet. JB HiFi has a range of Apple products on sale but it's the Macbooks that caught my eye as I'm still using an old intel Macbook from last decade. The whole range appears to have been discounted.

Eg MacBook Air 15 inch with M4 chip 512GB/16GB is $222 off at $2177 - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/apple-macbook-air-15-inch…

The 13 inch with M4 chip 512GB / 16GB is $1778 - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/apple-macbook-air-13-inch…

All colours appear to have been discounted.

Time to start the new circlejerk.

16gb ram not enough need 24, 256gb aint enough, need 512.

    • +1

13 too small, need 15. Am OK with 16 and 256 though as a basic home laptop.

      • +7

24gb is so underratrd. I"ve got 30 firefox tabs open and a code editor. rn 20gb NON CACHED of ram is being used, and keeping the system smooth. My 16gb laptop ran out of ram frequently. If you've got internet ADHD 24 is a must.

You can live with 256gb ig.

15" MBA is incredible. I came from a 13" MBA and WOW. You really do notice the diff. the 15" is way nicer to use, so much more screen real estate. Could never use a 13" laptop

        • Gold Jerry, GOLD!

        • I am on a 16GB 16" Intel MBP. Still havent felt the need for more RAM, dont develop code on this, just surfing, youtubing etc. But definitely does not hurt to have 24 GB on a new one considering it will be used for another 5 to 7 years. I cant think of using a 13" consdering the desktop monitor is a 42" OLED TV ;)

          • +1

@John Doh: I just get distracted easily aha. Most people probably only need 16. But 24 makes life easier.

      • +6

I find 13" laptops great for travel and would never consider the 15" models personally.

        • -4

The 13/15 inch laptops are gonna be in a bag either way. Who tf really caries ONLY a 13 inch laptop and maybe a sleeve.

Carrying a laptop with no case/bag, is like having sex without a condom. Some people do it, but it's unsafe, and not worth it.

          • +9

@John Barosa: My macbook is always raw doggin' it

          • @John Barosa: The size of the bag is actually the least of my concerns because I'm always carrying it in a giant camera bag anyway lol.

            • @eecan: Then why do you care about size of the computer? Only niche scenario I can think of, where a 13" macbook is better, is if ur on a flight, and the flight can't fit a 15 incher.

        • +2

Have the M4 MBA 15. But while we do travel with it, most of the time it is at home about the house or outside. A truly impressive upgrade to my old intel MBA.

I do travel a lot however, and it is a lot lighter and vastly longer battery life than my horrible work issued dell latitude 13 inch that I do have to lug around everywhere. Hate that machine. Heavy, slow, poor battery life, heavy, poorly built, poor battery life and heavy. At least I can charge through USB-c so I don’t have to take the dell power brick with me as well. Can use the one smaller power brick that charges everything at once.

But if I was travelling and taking the MBA with me all the time the 15 is too big to be frank. And as I already have to take the Dell when travelling, for personal travel use I use an iPad for size and weight considerations.

    • Rubbish. Moved from M1 8gb to M2 16gb. No change in speed at all. Xcode still ran like shit. And it wasn't because of the memory.

      • You're doing something wrong then, even though the m2 isn't a big jump, the ram will let you do more at the same time.

        • Depends what he's working on though. He already said he wasn't memory-bound.

Compute on Silicon can really suck compared with eg. a Threadripper.

          • +1

@idonotknowwhy: The performance of a threadripper laptop would be awesome. Until it melted.

          • @idonotknowwhy: Actually good point - the stock SSD on the M2 was a big step down in speed (single chip ssd instead of two on M1, or 512gig m2)

        • That’s cause he needs more P cores. So M4 Pro with 10 P cores will be big jump from the 4 P cores in M2

    • Depends on your needs

Ah, mac apple book from Norman hi fi

Going from an Intel Mac to an M4 will be quite the transition. Enjoy!

  • Damn… cheaper than AOC…😲
Today I bought $1000 of Apple GC and redeemed…

I had to prepare Ultimate GC.

    • I have $1000 of Ultimate GCs. Is there a way to add them on JB Hi-Fi web account and make a purchase if I don't use Google or Apple wallets? Or I have to go to a store and redeem them one at a time? They're all in $50 cards (from a Coles deal a few months ago), and I'm dreading to swipe and enter PINs of 20 cards in a store. 😮‍💨

      • +1

In my experience, Jbhifi possible to use multiple GC at once but ultimate card works same as prepaid card. Other GC cards are normally need to convert before you want to use each brand's GC like a TCN, but Ultimate is working like a visa or master. So you can only use one at once by online.

I think you have to go to store if you want to use all of them at a time.

        • Yeah, I remember reading something along those lines here before. I wish they were $100 cards instead of 50s. Well, I got them for 10% off so you can't win 'em all.

    • Sorry, same price as AOC.(Actually, a few cents cheaper than AOC😅)
I checked someone's comment but that was edu store link.

      It is AOC
      https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/shop/buy-mac/macbook-ai…

      And this is EDU
      https://www.apple.com/au-edu/shop/buy-mac/macbook-air/15-inc…

If you have an Onepass membership, Officeworks is the best price(a little expensive but can get X5 flybuys point).

I already bought Apple GC, so stick with AOC.

      • +1

… and if you're one of many who shifted banking to Macquarie this week, you can get a JB HiFi gift card at 4% off via their marketplace. That's another $59 off the basic 13" model.

      • Can you check out using your Apple balance when paying via the Apple EDU store?

Every time I get to bag and payment it tries to use my credit card and says my Apple account is not enabled for payments on the web.

Never seen or had this issue before with Apple Pay?

        • I just tried using the Android Samsung browser on my Galaxy and there is no problem I applied my balance $1000 which yesterday I redeemed through the iTunes app on Window10.

I tried on the AOC page.
Check your regional settings or ask Apple.
My account was made a long long time ago in Korea and I changed the regional setting last year.

  • Do JB still do the 2 week price drop guarantee? Not seeing anything on their website or T&C's

    • Yeah, it's an unwritten rule they have.

      • +1

Yeah just cashed out in a phone purchase, cha-ching

  • Picked one up from Officeworks at 1477 this morning…seems from comments that they were matching AOC, JB in turn too seem to be

  • Are those woolies giftcards with 20x rewards usable at JB HiFi? (Or officeworks, since theyve lowered the prices too)

    • There's no gift cards available at the moment aww

Gotta hand it to apple. I used a MacBook air m4 that was given to me from work for the first time. The damn thing is a powerhouse blows any other laptop out of the water. Just get used to the gesture controls and UI, going back to a windows laptop really shows how dated and slow they are. Well played Apple.

    • “Budget” end for Apple.

    • Yes. Feel the same.

as a 30 years windows (DOS—>Windows) user, who built his own PCs for years, I flipped to the M1 architecture (8gb/512gb) back in 2020 because I had so many tabs open, and recently to the M4 (16Gb/512gb) when the RAM became a bottleneck especially video conferencing plus heavy tabs.

These things just work. Whilst some UX feels quite dated and the "sharing" between apps suck a bit, little annoyances like I can't turn off apple music for bluetooth headset connects, the MACs are snappy, search is great and resale value surprisingly good when I offloaded my M1.

These laptops are worth the premium imho (and that is from someone who likes bargains… The MacAir total cost of ownership has been lower for me than usual windows PC laptops… I have 3 teenagers eating up windows laptops at school…)

  • +2

Too bad they don’t have pen drawing capability on screen like the surface. (And no, carrying an iPad + Mac isn’t an option)

Thats the only thing stopping me investing into these apple laptops - as I use the surface pen a lot for signing, notation/ markup of documents etc.

    • How many non iPad or Wacom users actually do that on a laptop though?

I almost never use the touch screen on my work dell even though it is open all the time (and it would be absolutely never if it is connected to a display.
Might be because my personal machine is an iPad for all those purposes, and all I take with me on personal trips, or when I have to take the work Dell.

  • Is upgrading from M2 to M4 worth the investment? Primary use is web browsing, video conferences, MS Office etc. No photo/ video editing or dev work.

    • +3

No. M2 is more than capable for your needs.

    • +3

No I wouldn’t believe you would notice much in the way of difference for those tasks if you did a straight upgrade (same RAM and storage). The M4 was one of the biggest perf jumps they’ve done, but an M2 still eats that workload for breakfast.

  • +8

How many people are still rocking an original M1 from 2020 with only 8GB of RAM and for my purposes it's still going along beautifully. It'll be 5 years old in December and still hoping to stretch it to at least 6, or even 7. My previous 2013 Macbook Pro lasted me 7 years. Even when I did upgrade that to the M1, sure I noticed a difference. but it wasn't the most groundbreaking amazing thing. It was nice, but it wasn't overly exciting. The worst thing about the 2020 M1 Macbook air is the facetime camera is a bit crappy.

    • +1

I did the same bump from a late 2013 pro to an M1 air, and felt the difference was substantial. Battery life, fan noise, lap heat, let alone the actual performance difference.

    • Was going to say, for those who would be happy with an M1 8GB/256GB, can save $500 by going with Big W’s M1 MacBook Air for $999.

    • +2

I'm rocking an M1 but with 16GB RAM as my primary work machine. Love it to bits.

    • I'm still rocking an Intel and it serves my purpose just fine.

      • Yeah I both love and resent our intel mba being good enough to not warrant an upgrade. Stupid excellent machines !!!

    • my missus uses a base M1 Air (8GB) everyday, and I'm on the base M1 Pro (16GB). No issues, still have lots of battery life!
we did disable Apple intelligence coz it's a huge waste of resources.

    • I'm still on my 2015 Macbook Pro and it's still going along beautifully. Had to change the battery 3 times so far, and had they not dropped OS update support for it, I would not be on the lookout for a new one.

I'm tossing between getting the M4 or wait a few more months for the M5. And then there's a rumour of a huge update next year.

      Sigh…

      • You can use OCLP to put Sequoia on it. Won't make it any faster though ;)

  • This is a great machine for the price.

I went with 15" 24/512 from AOC though.

    • The difference between 16 and 24 on AOC is $300. That seems super steep for 8gb more ram

      • +1

yea, I know Apple upgrade prices are steep.

I need at least that much RAM for how I use my Mac.

    • may I ask what is AOC? where do I find a deal on the 15"?

  • +2

Cyberpunk 2077 native on MacOS as of today too.

  • +5

Trust me I am struggling with 256gb. never ever. mac is producing good product but their software will chew more than 50% and what will you have is nothing as time goes by.
    So spend on 512 now.

  • Do apple giftcards work on the AOC store?

    • Yes

  • should i get this (M4 15" base) now or wait for M5? will be my first MacBook ever switching from windows (surface laptop)?
also side q, is it at all possible to torrent apps on macOs?
any advice much appreciated, thanks in advance :)

    • +1

Yes very easily. I’d do a reddit search for tips and advice on that.

      • Thanks mate

  • Hey guys, 32gb ram on MBA M4 is over spec?

    24gb ram/1tb or 32gb ram/512gb $2707.1 same price.

Just go 24gb ram/512gb with external ssd 4tb?
I'm gonna use it for minimum 10years.
I know there is no problem for simple job on MBA m4 entry model but I just worried about OS update for 10 years.

I hate Apple's option division and not available DIY upgrade.😤

    • +1

16GB is enough for most people.

If you are a power user like me having several browsers with a tons of tabs open, many apps running at the same time i.e, doing heavy multitasking then 24GB is sufficient. 32GB is overkill.

Just go 24gb ram/512gb with external ssd 4tb?

      Yes.

Are you thinking about 13" or 15"?

      • 15" and it will stuck on the desk forever. So external ssd is not gonna bothering me.

  • +3

Got my M4 MBP with 1TB in Jan.

As someone who uses it purely for media, tinkering - 256GB is inexcusable. It just isn't enough. I've already blown past it with random apps, VMs, files.

  • can you still charge these via USB C or does it have to be the magcharge connector? What about the Macbook Pro?

    • can you still charge these via USB C

      Yes.

    • can you still charge these via USB C

      Of course.

  • Don’t forget to stack discounted Apple Gift Cards if you can for an extra up to 5% off even on AOC up to a max $2k / 8 Gift Cards per transaction

  • +1

I've got a current MacBook Pro 2017 model. Despite being in excellent condition, the performance lag is really noticeable now, even with basic use for med school. Am I better off with a MacBook Air (M4) 13" (15" is too big for my preference) or MacBook Pro (M4) 14" when I do upgrade reasonably soon? With education pricing it would be essentially $1549 vs $2349. Is the $800 difference justified? Additionally, is there a way to access AppleCare+ education price?

    • New MBP with M5 should be out in Oct if you can wait that long.

    • +1

My opinion: get the M4 Air now and stop torturing yourself with that old machine! Unless you know you need the MBP, you don't. Also what 1549, you are posting on a deal where it's 1478. Personally I'd consider 512GB (which is some of that price difference you mention).

      • Yes of course, messed up the price there..
I don't really care for the storage, most of my stuff is on G-Drive but I do appreciate the nicer display on the MBP..

        • +1

I'm gonna go against the grain here.

You have a 2017 model. This tells me you don't upgrade often. Meaning the extra price difference for something like this is less of an issue vs long-term value. If you believe the better display will give you a better experience, and you use it regularly/even daily, and expect to use it the same way for many years; I say go for the pro 14"! Otherwise you'll always be like 'yeah I saved money.. but.. man that other display would've been nice'. Just depends on whether that 800 is significant to you right now, as a one-off.

  • I have an m1 256/8gb, which is working well still but I want to start doing some 4k video editing. Would it make the most sense from a value and future proof perspective to go with the 512/24gb option for $2077? Having a hard time deciding which 13 inch model to get..
